You can't do better than Marjorie Standish. Great cookbook for beginners as the recipes are easy with ingredients most people have. However, as a seasoned cook, it is still my go to cookbook with great tried and true recipes!!

Well known to most New England cooks, Marjorie Standish's cookbooks are a great source. Have known many a person who heads out to the freedom of their own apartment who got her books as a housewarming gift. Sometimes, more than one set. :)This cookbook is a must have for anyone who loves New England cooking. I had them when they first came out, and when I lost them during a move, made the effort here to replace them. That says a lot in itself. Marjorie's books are entertaining and well laid out. The only critique would be...why didn't see make more than she did. I only know of the two, this being the first. If you can get your hands on one, buy it. If you can get your hands on TWO, gift one to a friend. Five stars, because we can't give more stars than that. :)

I really like the concept of this book and had a good time studying it, though some parts were a bit technical. Some reviewers commented on how "in a day" is misleading. I spent about a week studying it and still haven't come close to mastering it, but the core concept is simple. My biggest aha was in learning to identify members of the aster family. The thing I was mostly disappointed about was that the main means for identification came down to a plant's flowers. That may be the best way to identify members of a given family, but what do you do when they aren't in bloom? There were some comments about leaves, fruit, etc, but it mostly talked about flowers. I think the author did a good job. It wasn't everything I ever dreamed it could be, but it was very helpful.

Nobody learns botanical ID in one day! The concept is great, however as a (degreed) novice, I found that it is not written for beginners at all. I quickly ordered a glossary of botanical terms because the book is written as though all readers are comfortable with them. I would not recommend to another beginner.

I bought this for my 7 year old daughter, out little "budding botanist," *har har.* Rather than read it all at once, she would savor and study each section until she had it committed to memory. Upon realizing how much my little one was learning, I picked it up, and devoure it. Concise, yet descriptive. It is not a studyguideforyou to memorize, rather, it teaches you the way botanists and scientists discern one plant from another...i.e. how to think like a botanist.

I was looking forward to reading this book and using it with my herbal studies. I am living in South Florida and it clearly states in the beginning of the book that it is meant to be used for readers up North. I'm sure there is a book out there somewhere like this just for Florida..........I just haven't found it yet. I hope the author can create a similar series for those of us down South. I did return it. :-(

Having taken two upper-level plant taxonomy courses in college, I found after many years I was getting a little forgetful about some of the less common plant family characteristics. This is not a field guide, per se; it's a handy manual that points out the various characteristics of plant families. Highly recommended for the naturalist who wants to save time flipping through field guides because they're unfamiliar with the families.

A couple of things first: I am a degreed botanist who once had a three ring binder in which I had described the characteristics of every plant family found in California and almost all plant families found in the US. I lost it during a move sometime ago. I bought this book in 2006 to help avoid duplicating all that info again. I never looked at the book until this year when I decided to key out some weeds in the backyard. Though I found a few errors in the text (which only a taxonomist or morphologist would see), but overall this book duplicated my three ring binder plus it added other information on use and toxicity. I have read it through a few times and pick up little facts each time. Sure an untrained person will have some difficulty using it without first taking the time to understand the basics of a plant. Nothing is free. With just a little effort this book will be very useful. And please note that the author basically described the demographics of where this book would be most helpful: 85% in Montana (where he lives) and 5% in Florida (where I guess he never lived). The West, Midwest, and Northeast are well covered.Update 11/5/2012: Just found a beautiful weed in the backyard. Used this book to determine it was in the Solanum family. Unfortunately it is a genus that was not covered in the book...but the book was helpful in eliminating all the other genera. Using a Jepson manual and only the section on Solanums, I was able to key it out to Nicandra physalodes (Apple of Peru). Double checked my results by using the Calphotos web site and sure enough there it was. Botany in a Day is extremely useful even when the genus is not present in the book!

Well organized and clearly written, this book is a great way to learn to recognize the major groups of flowering plants. Included is an explanation of terms used in the book as well as useful illustrations. A good portion of the text is devoted to the harvesting of wild plants and their medicinal uses, which was somewhat disappointing since I would have rather focused on how genera differ from each other. However, since studying from Mr. Elpel's book, I feel confident of being able to place unknown plants into specific families and enjoy it immensely.

I'm still studying this book. I'm using it as a textbook for herb mentor (dot) com. It has a good explanation of plant parts and terms at the beginning of the book. It is set up in families of plants, has clear drawings, and is easy to understand. It is not completely comprehensive, so a supplement guide may be needed to identify all known plants.

There are about 3 recipes in this book that I love and they have become a part of our regular monthly dinner menu, If I liked seafood i think that I would have many more favorites. Pictures are great, easy to understand instructions and the measurements are written for an American audience (meat in pounds instead of Kilos, cups not grams…) Glad I got it.

Bought this for my Mom's birthday. I think she liked it or she just hasn't looked at it yet. Pictures are appetizing and the recipes sound good.

Cookbook was extremely helpful. The cooking instuctions were easy to follow. Pictures used in cookbook were great quality. I highly recommend purchasing this.

While some very popular Filipino recipes were omitted from this book (garlic rice immediately comes to mind), overall solid recipes with good breadth and pictures.

I bought this for reference to go with my own collection of my family's recipes. Some of the ingredients may be hard to find if you don't have a well stocked Asian grocer near by but it's a great step into the world of Filipino cuisine. Ang Sarap!

I bought this book because it features some Kapamangan recipes. I know the Kapampangans are well-known in the Philippines for their fine cuisine.I have tried some desert recipes and they were so yummy (especially Leche Flan and yemas my personal favorites) and my friends loved them too. I will update this review once I have tried other recipes in this book. I can't wait to try adobo...The book is glossy shiny good quality print, with mouthwatering photographs!

Set in the last year of the Civil War, Taylor Brown’s “Fallen Land” begins with Callum. As the story unfolds, Callum is sent out with orders from the “Colonel” to their troop of horse thieves to find food for their men. While searching the closest home, he comes upon a young girl, Ava, and attempts to save her from the fate he foresees happening to her if she doesn’t hide.Together Callum, his horse Reiver, and Ava make their way, sometimes on horseback, sometimes on foot, from her family home in Virginia. They slowly make their way through the carnage and destruction brought by the war.Despite their fears, despite a changing landscape and the dangers from man, animal and nature everywhere, with each day and each night its own new horror show, there is an ease to both Callum and Ava that allows their trust to grow as the miles and days go by. Slowly, naturally, sweetly they grow to be a team by choice.Brown’s prose through “Fallen Land” is gorgeous, raw, perfection for the setting and the era. “Fallen Land” is a stunning debut novel.

Excellent character development. The novel traces the trials and adventures of a young couple, Ava and Callum. Highly recommended! The tale includes rape, a faithful horse, starvation, fear, evil, a bounty hunter, murder, destruction and ruin, love, fear, the burning of Atlanta, a hanging, and more. This novel is well written and fast paced. It definitely will keep your attention. The novel deserves an A++++++

A really well-written book about a teenage boy riding with Confederate raiders in the Civil War. He rescues a girl about his age who was violated by the leader of his band. The Colonel is shot and killed by Union forces as he chased after the boy, who was blamed for the death. A bounty put on his head by the Colonels’ brother, who is an expert tracker and uses bloodhounds to find his quarry. This scenario ensures an exciting chase and a series of near-misses as the boy and girl ride to his relatives farm and safe haven. A seamless plot, historical and societal accuracy, and an inventive believable finish make this a great read.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!! It is so refreshing to read a book by an author who uses imagination to develop a story rather than work from the same "cookie cutter" pattern as most current authors do. Additionally, this book is a great insight into the most significant conflict of American history - the Civil War. I have now read all Taylor Brown books and can't wait for the next one! If he keeps going he will be as great as Ken Follett (my all time favorite!).

Suffer. Suffer, add blood, and suffer some more. I read it - keep waiting for it to get better, then it was over and was left with the question why? The civil war was just an convenient time frame to locate the story line to create interest. If I want to read suffering I read Game of Thrones with fully developed characters I can feel empathy for.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I was little disappointed with both. Both stories revolved around the main character and a villain heading for a big showdown or confrontation. The problem is both the confrontations were very underwhelming. Kind of a dud both times.

What an adventure! This is the second book I have read by this author. His writing flows so well that I find myself reading too fast. I have to re-read some of the paragraphs to appreciate the beautifully descriptive words and phrases. I am drawn in by not only the story line but the interesting and well developed characters.

The only reason I gave it a four instead of a five is because I think his second novel, The River of Kings s stronger. After I read that I wanted to read Fallen Land. I loved it too and am eagerly awaiting more brilliant novels from this promising writer.

I read Jon's Ableton Live 9 Power and thought it was one of the most clearly written, and well-planned books of this type. I spent a career writing user manuals; it is no easy task, especially at the depth and breadth that he delivers in a book on a software package that's this "huge." Buying Ableton Live 10 Power was a no brainer... the fastest track to getting at the new stuff easily, while getting a solid review of the "old."

This guide is well organized and written in a way that keeps you digging. I expected a somewhat boring manual but it's easy on the eyes (larger font) and intellectually intriguing. After a couple years with Live/Push scratching through bits and pieces of Abletons manual, clicking random buttons in wonder and scouring over many YouTube tutorials this book is exactly what I needed. Something concise, informative and organized by someone far more experienced than me. Thanks Jon!

It covers a lot of territory and can be used as a reference guide. It would have been nice to have some walkthrough lessons, but if you make it through the entire book you'll have a very good understanding of Live 10.

If you prefer paper to digital, this book will work for you. It basically walks you through the same stuff that is in the help menu of Ableton. I prefer paper books so I thought I would like having this as a reference. Unfortunately it doesn't really provide anything more than what is already provided in the software. On the up side, if you wear reading glasses, you can put them away. The text size is large which makes the book large and cumbersome. Smaller text would be nice to reduce the weight of this book from that of a boat anchor to a paper weight. Wish I would have had time to look at it sooner after receiving it so I could have requested a refund. It is to bulky to carry to the office for reading on breaks which was why I bought it to begin with.

Good content but the huge font size is a distraction.

There isn't any information in this book that can't be easily found in the Live manual. No tricks or "power" advice.

The only book you'll need for Live 10, plus online tutorials.

Although I haven't finished this yet, and am not sure I will, it is perfect as I was hoping to use it. Anytime I need to reference something or figure out a new step I'm working through, this manual is my go to aside from youtube. It's thorough, comprehensive and easy to read text indicates why it's the go to source for learning Ableton. Grateful this book is available outside of classrooms.

This is not a book that I'd normally pick up but when it was chosen for our local One Book, One Community read I thought I'd give it a try. Going into it, all I knew was that it was about a hostage situation involving a young Canadian journalist in Somalia. What I didn't expect was how riveting a book could be even though I already knew the outcome.A House in the Sky starts out showing Lindhout's childhood with her sometimes turbulent family life in Alberta, Canada. As a child she eagerly spends her meager pocket money on old National Geographic magazines and fantasizes about traveling to the far reaches of the world. At the age of 19, she earns enough money waitressing to spread her wings and make her first trip to Venezuela. There her love of travel is sparked and she continues to travel to far-off places including Pakistan, Ethiopia, Syria, Burma ... The more she travels the more dangerous some of her destination choices become, especially for a woman often traveling alone. While in Kabul, Afghanistan, and with no formal training, she decides to take up photography and journalism as a way to fund her passion for travel. In order to get bigger, more newsworthy stories she decides to go into more dangerous regions which leads her to Mogadishu, Somalia in 2008 - an area rife with danger and where most reporters choose not to venture.Accompanying her to Somalia is her former boyfriend Nigel Brennan, an experienced photographer from Australia. Shortly after arriving in Somalia they are taken hostage and, in total, they are held captive in Somalia for a staggering 460 days. During these months they are tortured - both physically and mentally, starved, beaten and worse. Many scenes aren’t for the faint of heart and knowing that this wasn’t a work of fiction caused me to be much more emotional than I had anticipated.Admittedly, some of Lindhout's decisions are naïve and impetuous and I had heard from other readers that witnessing her make these decisions frustrated them. I didn't have the same reaction. Instead, I thought she described her thought processes (and past experiences) well which enabled me to understand why she made those decisions. Still, it wasn't easy to read. I knew she'd be captured (and live through it). I knew there would, most likely, be violence and abuse and yet even though I knew generally how things would pan out for her I found myself on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book (and often hoping she'd somehow miraculously make different decisions).Lindhout endured repeated horrors, deprivation, starvation and torture - both physical and psychological. And yet what will stay with me is her compassion and forgiveness towards her young tormentors (many of whom were teens and young men) and even Nigel, her friend and fellow prisoner, who made some decisions that didn't sit well with me. Lindhout showed compassion and forgiveness far surpassing anything I think I could manage if I were put in the same situation.The fact that Lindhout survives is astounding but what is even more amazing is how, through months of pain and torture, she was able to keep her wits about her by imagining her House in the Sky - a place she could go to in her mind to get away from the horror she lived with on a daily basis. She is a testament to the power of the human mind, soul and the desire to survive.This well-written book will pull you into Lindhout’s small world and while you may not agree with some of her decisions, you will be captivated by this book. Readers will witness vulnerability, strength, compassion and the strength of the human body and spirit. They will experience the roller coaster of emotions with Lindhout - from fear, despair, anger, horror but always with a glimmer of hope. Even though she had such a devastating experience in Somalia, Lindhout has proven that we have a choice in how life's events will affect our future. She has chosen to bring something positive to the people of Somalia via her organization, Global Enrichment Foundation which provides university scholarships to Somali women.This is a book that will stay with me for a very long time. I am eager to meet Lindhout this fall when her book tour comes through my area. It will be a privilege to meet her and I hope that she realizes how much her tragedy has impacted others.I highly recommend this book and give it my rare 5 stars.

I finished this book in a couple of days, mainly because it was so hard to put down. Then I decided to wait several days before writing this review because I wanted to be fair to the author, Amanda Lindhout. I won't spend a lot of time covering the events of the 15 months Lindhout was in captivity since many reviews have done that. While I read the book, I alternated between disgust at what was happening to Lindhout and anger at her for putting herself in that position. I would love to know what credentialed journalists think of her and what she did. She fantasized about being a war reporter, took a flying short course in photography, and then immersed herself in one of the most dangerous parts of the world. For all practical purposes, Lindhout was completely unprepared for what she did. This book reminds me a lot of Cheryl Strayed's book Wild. This story has almost become a genre: people putting themselves in difficult situations with little or no preparation. All of that said, no one deserves what happened to Lindhout, and I admire her ability to mentally overcome the abuse she endured. I also admire what she did after she was rescued building a foundation rather than merely running out to the speaker's circuit to profit from her spupidity. To say this is a great story seems a bit unseemly since it is so brutally violent. This I guarantee: you will be riveted while reading Lindhout's story.

This book documents the kidnapping of Amanda Lindhout and a fellow journalist in Somalia, but the first part of the book also details the author's childhood and other travels. The background is essential to the main story because it gives the reader a sense of who the author is, her curiosity for the world, her adventurous nature and makes you relate to her and empathize with her during her kidnapping.There has been some criticism of the author and her naiveté in going to a place like Somalia, but there are two things I would like to mention that made this book incredible and different:1. At no point does the author indulge in self-pity, which considering her circumstances, is an incredible feat. She describes her kidnapping in vivid detail including the emotional and physical abuse that she suffers, but there is no under-lying attempt to gain sympathy or self-pity. She comes across as incredibly strong and that one does feel immense sympathy for the horrendous circumstances that she was in is due to the nature of what she underwent.2. The author also has incredible control over her portrayal of Somalia and its people. Somalia is a foreign country to most people, considering that it is not a tourist destination and any news coming from the country generally tends to be about violence and war. In that situation, it is very easy for unaware readers to make vast generalizations about Somalians and the country itself based on Lindhout's experience. But she makes sure to never make any generalization about the country, and goes as far as to attempt to understand the reasons behind her kidnappers' actions. After the reading the book, I got a sense that Somalia is a dangerous country due to its political circumstances but I made no other assumptions about it.Above all I really recommend this book as a story of human survival and resilience amidst the harshest of circumstances.
