Got this for my stepson's class at a junior college. I was impressed enough to order my own. I know absolutely nothing about coding or programming, but I easily did the first few pages of the tutorial with him. It is very step-by-step, so should be a good read for the total newbie who needs to learn at a simple level. Each module ramps up a little in intensity; there is less hand-holding and you are expected to apply what you learned earlier. I'm glad his professor chose this book. It takes a scary subject and really makes it simple for us non-techies. Tan boxes distinguish what you actually need to type into your computer; I love that it's color-coded because that's how my mind works. If you are intermediate or advanced level, I doubt this will help much, but it's very user-friendly for beginners.

Great Book! I have a copy of the physical book, but wanted it for my digital library as well. It definitely walks you through the most important things you need to know about building web pages, and there are plenty of practice exercises to hone in your skills. My favorite part about this book is that it walks you through, but lightly leaves you to use your own skills you've learned. For example, the case projects start off guiding you through, but then the last one leaves you on your own to use the skills you've learned in the tutorial to do your own thing.

I like this text. It was carefully designed with lots of beautifully colored diagrams and figures that explain the main points of each chapter. The text avoids making the reader memorize a lot of esoteric terms, but each chapter involves leading the reader through the material via a tutorial that includes most of the points covered in the chapter. Thus, this text book provides a hands-on approach to learning the often complicated subject matter. I highly recommend it.

Garbage used for a garbage college course. Do yourself a favor and just watch youtube videos or join a online program with live teachers.

This book is great for me, a total newbie to HTML and CSS. I find the information broken down very thoroughly and I love the read, do, practice style of the book. I had another introduction the HTML/CSS book that I was using for a college course, prior to this, that wasn't anywhere near as good.

I'm interested in science journalism and trying to gain an edge when applying to online news jobs by learning some HTML/CSS. After renting and returning this book for a class, I decided to buy it again because it had been so helpful! I especially like the indices and the visual examples of how pages/assignments should look. This particular copy was just under $40 and in better shape than the one I rented- front cover was bent by the mailman, but no markings or torn pages!

I purchased this book for a class I am taking on web page design. However, this would be a great book for someone interested in learning web design without taking the class. The book walks you through multiple examples of web pages and sites for fictious companies and events. Very interesting and you gain a better than entry level knowledge of web design. No special software needed, Microsoft Windows has everything needed to get started learning. Putting the pages and sites live and on line is a different matter.

Really covers what you need to know about HTML and CSS.The chapter cases/examples at the end are a little frustrating without guidance but the chapters themselves cover basic to intermediate material quite thoroughly.I would recommend this as a textbook (how I used it) or just a book if you want to learn the latest HTML & CSS with a lot more ease.

Index needs to be better. Because the book is organized in groups of top 10, the index needs to be improved. I wish I had not bought the book. It's difficult to find things, and what you do find is of such limited explanation as to almost be useless. I have 10 or 15 DK books and I've traveled to over 50 countries, and this book is almost useless.

While I have found other DK Eyewitness guides quite good, they were bigger books with in-depth coverage of cities like Vienna, Prague, and Budapest rather than a Top 10 book like this one. While this book could be useful for picking out the main sights you want to see before a trip to Mexico City, it is not really very useful once you are actually there. It is simply way too shallow in its coverage of the sights. You definitely will need another guide book during your trip. I ended up using the Lonely Planet Mexico City book together with the Mexico City chapter of Fodor's Mexico 2010 book. I barely looked at this book during the 4 days I spent in Mexico City. (I gave them each 3 stars.) Since you'll need another book any way, you can use it to pick out the best sights to see and skip this one. It's unfortunate that DK has not provided a complete Mexico City book instead of this Top 10 book.I should add that Mexico City is a great place to visit. It has great sights and great food. It is a shame that more Americans don't visit it. While it has a reputation of being polluted and dangerous, my wife and I both felt very safe and comfortable during our entire trip.

I am giving this only two stars because the print is so small I can hardly read it. If you wear cheaters to read, this is not the book for you. I give credit to this book for giving the top ten of everything. However, since I am seasoned beyond the age of being 'eagle-eyed' I am afraid I will need to bring along a large magnifying glass to see the print, maps and photos. I will now be searching for another guide book with larger print as I don't want to carry a large magnifying glass to see my guidebook pages as I explore this exciting city. Pass this one up if you don't like reading fine print.

I had three days in Mexico City, and this little guide did a good job pointing me to the key places to visit and providing background information. I would highly recommend it if you're trying to prioritize places to visit, as I was, and are not familiar with Mexico City, like me.

It is small enough to easily take with you anywhere, and as long as this is the only guide you are using it is outstanding. Provides great summaries of the top places to see in Mexico City. I found it very useful.

Another fine Top 10 guide. Although the web has so much info, it's nice to have a small, compact, graphic-rich guidebook in your travel bag. Highly recommended.

Beautiful guide. Well-organized and well-written. Nice photos. But: teeny little maps and no overview map, which I really missed. Oddly, no mention of Uber, which we used extensively and was quite cheap (like a 30-minute ride for $5). I'd buy it again though.

My all-time favorite: I give it to all my friends who travel to Mexico City. There is no better or more compact, all-encompassing guide. Great maps!

OK. I am a guy who bought the book, How Women Rise. Let me share some background, before I attempt to share the immense value of this resource.Sally Helgesen’s book, The Female Advantage, was read in 1996, my first year as an entrepreneurial organizational development specialist. I had not read many, if any leadership books penned by women in the ten years that preceded Sally’s book, and the title intrigued me. I read Marshall’s book, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, in 2007; it was so good that I purchased Triggers shortly after it was published. That book helped me significantly with changing a number of interpersonal behaviors, which I still have to monitor.Leadership, the development of individuals and teams toward their perpetual effectiveness and performance potentials, is obviously not a one-gender issue. Most large organizations in the 1960s through 1980s thought so, as the management teams were predominantly male-oriented. As a soft-skills, content developer and classroom facilitator/trainer, I wanted to utilize every possible concept, resource, and idea that would resonate with learners and empower them to help their direct reports become confident, self-motivated, task-effective performers.I would say that How Women Rise is a solidly reliable resource for helping others, not just women, identify, then deal with the habits/default behaviors that might currently be holding them back. The book is VERY interesting!! While I chose to read the book sequentially, another reader might choose to review the twelve habits that block effectiveness, then investigate the few habit-chapters that seem to be most like them. The case study examples given in the book are specific, concise, and illustrate how the individuals are initially and negatively impacted by their then current blind spots. The individuals share how their less-than-effective performances impacted their relationships with their bosses and show how they eventually chose to respond more effectively to overcome those situations and significantly improve those relationships, gaining confidence and performance-momentum in the process. Before I typed this line, I went back into the book and read habit 11, Ruminating. Ruminators live in the past, and they are the predominant Kierseyian temperament (SJ) in organizations. They dwell on the past, trying to mentally improve what (or who) went wrong. The authors do an noteworthy job of explaining how rumination is a waste of time and energy, and they offer solid suggestions for helping move beyond it! The same holds true for each of the other eleven habit-chapters.This book would seem appropriate for use in undergraduate programs of all types. Why not identify and address habits that are probably already at work, as one approaches his or her studies, life, etc.?Finally, personality type theory suggests that Thinkers make their decisions objectively, based upon logic, facts, and truth, while Feelers make their decisions subjectively, based upon values and impact upon people. Two-thirds of the men are Thinkers, and one-third are Feelers. Two-thirds of the women are Feelers, and one-third are Thinkers. I am one of those men who makes feelings-base decisions. So, we have women who think like a man, and we have men who feel/make decisions like a woman. This may at least one reason why How Women Rise resonated with me. Kudos to Sally and Marshall for their most productive effort; it certainly fills a void that has been sorely needed!Bill Parker

Fluidly written and easy to read, it’s also easy to find oneself in the pages of How Women Rise. I was hooked from the title of Part I—On Being Stuck. I want to avoid being stuck about as much as anything I can think of, and it’s my goal in coaching others—to learn how to avoid being stuck and to move from stuck to un-stuck if necessary. Much of the leadership literature is still aimed at improving the behaviors and increasing the success of a largely male audience; Helgesen and Goldsmith have synthesized years of leadership coaching experience to write a primer for women, identifying the forms of self-sabotage that women are particularly prone to engage in and offering practical advice, easily implemented, on how to overcome our success-inhibiting habits. How Women Rise helped me identify some hindering baggage that may be holding me back, and offered strategies for substituting more constructive behaviors instead. Straight forward and valuable.

While I think the specific 12 habits can easily apply to all women in all professions, I found the book largely inaccessible because it frames everything in the context of high powered corporate executives. If you work in a trade or do hands on work in a STEM field, you're going to have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to apply the 12 habits to your situation. While the habits themselves are fairly straightforward like using minimizing language or failure to promote yourself, the solutions aren't all that kosher. Almost all of the counter-behaviors amount to "it's a man's world, so you need to act more like the obnoxious male coworker you can't stand" and I don't find that satisfactory. For example, the counter-behavior for habit #3 "overvaluing expertise" is to be that guy who half-a**es his job while constantly tooting his own horn. It's repeated several times throughout the book that if you're too good at your job, nobody will ever want to promote you, therefore you shouldn't try too hard. While that may work for people trying to rise within a corporation where it doesn't actually matter if you know what you're doing as long as you're a good talker, it's downright awful advice for, say, a pilot or a surgeon. I'm a little stunned that a guide to navigate a sphere largely controlled by men totally failed to provide support for women whose career goals don't involve being chained to a desk in a stupid skirt suit.

This is SUCH a worthy message--particularly for women, but surprisingly so for men as well.If you're female, you'll find clear coaching on powerful self-management that positions you to advance in your career. The guidelines focus you on behaviors that are fully under your control, with a focus on 12 key habits women need to guard against in the work environment. How Women Rise spells out subtle but potent tendencies that women display which work to their disadvantage. You need to be aware of these inclinations, yet typically they go undetected. Sally and Marshall bring them to the forefront of your consciousness and position you to shift toward far more effective behaviors.Men, you need to read this book too, because it will make you much more aware of female talent that is underappreciated and underutilized in your organization. In short, How Women Rise will alert you to how you can better manage and capitalize on the female resources that surround you.

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions: 50th Anniversary Edition

Review

“Like Thomas Kuhn, Ian Hacking has a gift for clear exposition. His introduction provides a helpful guide to some of the thornier philosophical issues. . . . We may still admire Kuhn’s dexterity in broaching challenging ideas with a fascinating mix of examples from psychology, history, philosophy, and beyond. We need hardly agree with each of Kuhn’s propositions to enjoy—and benefit from—this classic book.” (David Kaiser Nature)"The Structure of Scientific Revolutions did a gestalt flip on just about every assumption about the who, how, and what of scientific progress. . . . The book still vibrates our culture’s walls like a trumpet call. History of science may not have become exactly what Kuhn thought it should, but The Structure of Scientific Revolutions knocked it off its existing tracks.” (Chronicle of Higher Education)“So long as there are still paradigms among us, the achievements of Thomas Kuhn will be remembered.” (National Post (Canada))“One of the most influential books of the 20th century. . . . Singlehandedly changed the way we think about mankind’s most organized attempt to understand the world.” (Guardian)“The Kuhnian image of science has reshaped our understanding of the scientific enterprise and human inquiry in general. If you haven’t already read The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, the publication of this inexpensive 50th-anniversary edition offers a perfect excuse to do so.” (Science)

First, let me state the obvious - since Kuhn is talking about the philosophy of science, this is not light reading. That said, this book is as relevant as it was when it was first published - perhaps more so. Kuhn makes a well-reasoned argument that science is not an objective search for "truth," as many people believe. Instead, "normal science" is a problem solving endeavor, solving known problems by known methods. Science only changes the rules by which it operates (its "paradigm" - that over-used and often misused term in contemporary language) only when the current paradigm causes more problems than it solves. This is the real answer to any from any field who say, "The science is settled. There is no room for discussion." Those who make that statement need to re-read Kuhn and come to grips with the reality that all knowledge is inevitably socially constructed. If you read this in graduate school, it is worth revisiting. If you have never read it and you are ready for some deep thinking, dive in. You will find your horizons expanded, and that is a good thing.

I found Thomas Kuhn's book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" very much a test to get past. Ordinarily, if a book doesn't keep my attention, or I think that it hard to peruse after the initial couple of pages, I surrender. Then again, I was dead set to endure this book, particularly given that the Times Literary supplement once portrayed it as one of "The Hundred Most Influential Books Since the Second World War"."The Structure of Scientific Revolutions", initially printed in 1962, is an examination of the historical backdrop of science. At the time of its circulation, it unsettled a couple of plumes, and keeps on doing as such today. In this book, Kuhn challenges the regular view that experimental advancement happens by the amassing of learning, prompting the improvement of acknowledged truths and hypotheses. He contends for a model whereby times of "ordinary science" are hindered by times of progressive science. It is amid such times of transformation that the advancement of experimental hypothesis happens. Kuhn portends that a standard transformation happens, whereby the tenets of examination and the bearing of exploration change, and new inquiries are asked of past information. One sample that Thomas Kuhn utilizes as a part of his book is the Copernican Revolution. This alludes to the ideal model transformation from the Ptolemaic model of the sky, which proposed the Earth at the middle of the world, towards the heliocentric model with the Sun at the core of our Solar System. While Copernicus initially set forward this model, it was just until Galileo presented his speculations concerning movement that the heliocentric model turned into an acknowledged reality.I wouldn't prescribe this book for the normal reader : its truly a scholastic book and there is a great deal to get your head around. By and by, I discovered this an extremely troublesome book to peruse; notwithstanding, it did get me contemplating experimental exploration and how we go about it. It is a book I accept I will return to every now and then and increase a tad bit more information every time I do. I think it would be perfect for a scientist who has an enthusiasm for logic and/or history. IJAZ DURRANI

Science is not a purely additive process. New facts and theories are not simply added to the pile of existing ones. New knowledge and understanding often requires abandoning or drastically reconceiving old theories and observations. Kuhn explores this in great detail, and I found it fascinating and insightful. For example, prior to the invention of the telescope, the celestial sphere was viewed as fundamentally different from the earthly sphere. But a simple look at the moon in Galileo's telescope reveals it to be a body that is very similar to the Earth. It has mountains which cast shadows as the light moves across them, and so on.The "moon" must now be be viewed as a rather different concept, and this new conception is invoked every time one looks at it. This new "paradigm" affects other observations, such as those of Jupiter and Saturn. They are not pure, static points of light like stars, and some color and a circular shape can be see with the new telescope. Must they be bodies like that of the Moon or Earth as well?In the book, as Kuhn presents his analysis, it seems we are also taking a deep look at epistemology, and the subtleties and differences between how something is perceived and how it is conceived. Grounded in the historical narrative of scientific advancement, I found this investigation of those difficult and elusive topics to be more enlightening than usual.I believe that some criticize Kuhn for how sharp and discontinuous he describes his paradigm shifts to be (although I haven't looked at this closely yet, I may be mistaken). For me, this was not a main point. I enjoyed his detailed analysis of how paradigms change in general, and why this is a more accurate description of how science progresses, compared to additive models.

This is not a book that can be read leisurely. It takes full concentration, and to be honest, I’m not sure that I caught everything. What I did catch about the theory of paradigm change and scientific revolutions was interesting. I like when he went in to the examples of different aspects of scientific revolutions in history (perhaps because those were the only concrete things he talked about). I understand that the successive steps that lead to scientific revolution and paradigm change. What I don’t understand is the relevancy. I know that he mentions how scientific textbooks present the history of a science as linear and building towards and end goal. He mentions that there probably is no end-goal—no final, perfect truth. Does this matter to a scientist, solving “normal” science puzzles? (I guess that’s an unfair question to ask anything involving philosophy.) I wish I could have read this when it came out, and what Kuhn was claiming was revolutionary itself.

Amazon.com Review

Just what sort of book is Flaubert's Parrot, anyway? A literary biography of 19th-century French novelist, radical, and intellectual impresario Gustave Flaubert? A meditation on the uses and misuses of language? A novel of obsession, denial, irritation, and underhanded connivery? A thriller complete with disguises, sleuthing, mysterious meetings, and unknowing targets? An extended essay on the nature of fiction itself? On the surface, at first, Julian Barnes's book is the tale of an elderly English doctor's search for some intriguing details of Flaubert's life. Geoffrey Braithwaite seems to be involved in an attempt to establish whether a particularly fine, lovely, and ancient stuffed parrot is in fact one originally "borrowed by G. Flaubert from the Museum of Rouen and placed on his worktable during the writing of Un coeur simple, where it is called Loulou, the parrot of Felicité, the principal character of the tale." What begins as a droll and intriguing excursion into the minutiae of Flaubert's life and intellect, along with an attempt to solve the small puzzle of the parrot--or rather parrots, for there are two competing for the title of Gustave's avian confrere--soon devolves into something obscure and worrisome, the exploration of an arcane Braithwaite obsession that is perhaps even pathological. The first hint we have that all is not as it seems comes almost halfway into the book, when after a humorously cantankerous account of the inadequacies of literary critics, Braithwaite closes a chapter by saying, "Now do you understand why I hate critics? I could try and describe to you the expression in my eyes at this moment; but they are far too discoloured with rage." And from that point, things just get more and more curious, until they end in the most unexpected bang. One passage perhaps best describes the overall effect of this extraordinary story: "You can define a net in one of two ways, depending on your point of view. Normally, you would say that it is a meshed instrument designed to catch fish. But you could, with no great injury to logic, reverse the image and define the net as a jocular lexicographer once did: he called it a collection of holes tied together with string." Julian Barnes demonstrates that it is possible to catch quite an interesting fish no matter how you define the net. --Andrew Himes

From the Inside Flap

A kind of detective story, relating a cranky amateur scholar's search for the truth about Gustave Flaubert, and the obsession of this detective whose life seems to oddly mirror those of Flaubert's characters.

What a strange book. How does one even begin to categorize it? Maybe that's the point. Maybe it shouldn't be categorized at all. It is literary criticism, posing as literary biography and meditation on fiction. It is an amalgam of those things and others. But mostly it is a tour de force of writing. This was Julian Barnes' third novel, published in 1984. It won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and was short listed for the Booker, the first of several of his books to be so listed. It is a short novel, very experimental in concept and structure. Some would call it plotless. It is certainly nonlinear in its story-telling.Barnes gives us as his main character and narrator English doctor Geoffrey Braithwaite, who is obsessed with Madame Bovary's author, Gustave Flaubert. Braithwaite's conceit is that he will write a biography of Flaubert. and to that end, he pores over Flaubert's correspondence, his books, and other biographies of the man.He becomes consumed by the minute details he discovers. Why do Emma Bovary's eyes change color in different editions or sections of the book? Which parrot inspired A Simple Heart - the one Flaubert borrowed from Rouen Museum and kept on his desk during the writing of the story or another one from a hotel? Braithwaite spends much of his time investigating the parrot issue and trying to resolve it.He also explores Flaubert's intellectual and physical relationships with others and particularly how they relate to the creation of Emma Bovary. It gradually becomes clear that there are parallels in Braithwaite's own life, that he sees something of Emma in the life of his own wife, now dead. All of this is revealed slowly, in fragmentary fashion, through extraordinary word play and dissertations on the writer's role, the relationship between art and life, and the unproductive role of literary critics. While most novels are presented in a straightforward, linear fashion that allows the reader to easily digest the meal being served, this one reveals itself somewhat as a coconut. The reader has to work to get at the milk and meat inside. The plot, if it can truly be called that, is Flaubert's life of the mind and the body. As Braithwaite enthusiastically explores that life, we are privy to his research, his notes, musings, and speculations. And that makes up the main body of the book. When we learn, finally, that Braithwaite's own much-loved wife had been unfaithful to him in the manner of Emma Bovary, we begin to appreciate his obsession, his need to understand both the writer and his fictional creations.Flaubert's Parrot brilliantly marries the details of Flaubert's life, his creation of the world of Emma Bovary, and the life of the narrator, Geoffrey Brathwaite, who had his own experience of adultery and, ultimately, of bereavement. And what about that parrot? Where did Flaubert get it? How did he conceive of it? How did it inspire him to write? Does it matter? Probably not. Well, then, never mind.

A central theme to Julian Barnes’ writing is our inability to capture exactly what happened with people, places, events…. well, things. Not only shortly after but even more distantly as we move away from what was once future, then present, now past. His 1984 book, “Flaubert’s Parrot,” takes us into this process through the imagined thoughts and conversations of several people, some current and some past contemporaries of the title’s human subject, the 19th century writer, Gustave Flaubert, whose “Madame Bovary” broke the mold for conventional fiction at the time. The initial journey is delivered through the travels and musings of an English physician, Geoffrey Braithwaite, fascinated, if not obsessed, with the life and relationships of the author. The good doctor’s initial focus is on identifying Flaubert’s original parrot, Loulou, now stuffed, who once was a living inspiration and companion during the writing of “Une Coeur Simple.”However, there is more than one stuffed bird. This doppelganger inspires an exhausting review of Flaubert’s life, habits, peculiarities, lists of his use of animals, trains, debates about the color of Emma Bovary’s eyes – all done to show much has been recorded about the author. It is exhausting. As counter point to all this detail, the author uses a ploy – the willful destruction of printed information of interest to the main character by another – that he revisits in his 2011 novel, ”The Sense of an Ending.” It seems to be his way of showing how transitory our ability to reconstruct events really is - no matter how many resources are available. Two chapters stand out and are worth reading on their own: “Louise Colet’s Version,” a tour de force by Barnes into the mind and emotions of Flaubert’s off-again, on-again lover and, “Pure Story,” a thoughtful exploration of feelings by a man reflecting on the loss of his wife who had a second life not unlike Emma Bovary. There are memorable lines such as: “The old times were good because then we were young and ignorant of how ignorant the young can be.”As to the parrot, there are more than meets the eye by the end of the book. You can also rest assured you will know more about Gustave Flaubert and his peccadilloes than you ever cared to… at least I did.

I think this is one of the best novels/short story collections written in the last 30 years. It is a pleasurable and deep reflection on human nature, on memory, on love, and on how we, as a species, try to grapple with the complexity of the surrounding world. The author writes beautifully (I have read pretty much all of his work, and would say this is his best). It will make you laugh a lot, it will make you think a lot, and you will come away with a definite sense of satisfaction and unease.Obviously this is not a whole history of the world (some of the reviewers seem surprised by this, failing to grasp the self-deprecating irony of the project), but a collection of interwoven reflections from a variety of perspectives (human and animal alike). The change of narrative voice is perhaps the most interesting thing about this book, as the reader constantly encounters a new perspective and, at times, has a hard time distinguishing "fact" from "fiction." This is, of course, Barnes's very point. The author's own narrative voice finally comes to us in the half chapter between 8 and 9 where he reveals (or seems to, anyway,) his own view of history: "History isn't what happened. History is just what historians tell us. There was a pattern, a plan, a movement, expansion, the march of democracy; it is a tapestry, a flow of events, a complex narrative, connected, explicable. One good story leads to another."
