I recently moved to Northern California and I wanted some guide books to help me explore my new area. I usually love Lonely Planet guide books so I figured I'd get both the California guide book (for when I have a long weekend and can go south) and the Northern California guide book so that I could get a lot more detail for the stuff that is close by and more easy to explore. Both of the books arrived, and I was really excited to start planning trips, but then I started comparing the two books. Low and behold they are the EXACT SAME THING... word for word, chapter for chapter. (The only thing that is changed between the books is the center piece with all the pictures.) The California guide book simply has 5 more chapters that include Southern California. The No.Cal. book is $2.75 cheaper, but I'd say just pay the extra $ to get the 5 more chapters in case you ever want to go to the south as well. The info looks good, I just wish that there were more detail for No. Cal. in the No. Cal. book

I eagerly awaited this new book, but it seems like it was barely updated from the previous version I borrowed from the library. For example, there is no mention of the new SMART train that opened last year that makes it easier to visit some small towns just north of San Francisco. In general, this book is very poor if you're relying on public transit. In Los Angeles, the light rail extension to Santa Monica Pier has been open for two years, but it instead suggests to take a slower bus. Buses between Los Angeles and San Francisco are faster than the train, but it only suggests the Greyhound bus, which leaves from a bus station in the sketchy outskirts of L.A. Megabus and Boltbus have been operating for years and offer a direct ride from L.A.'s Union Station in the city center or Hollywood to downtown San Francisco.I would suggest one uses this book as a starting point for research, then supplement your trip details with more online research.

I purchased this travel guide in the Kindle edition and am glad I did. This book is still the same thorough, insightful guide that I've come to expect from Lonely Planet, but with a whole new dimension. There are links to most of the attractions, businesses and info. sources cited in the book and as long as my Kindle Fire is connected to the web, all I have to do is click to go directly to their web sites for more details and up-to-date information.Additionally, I can expand all the maps included in the guide to zoom in on neighborhoods and streets. The colors are vivid on the Kindle display, which enhances the reading experience for me. I bought this book to help me plan a trip to this region. It is definitely going with me.

I have found that Lonely Planet's travel books vary from one book to another. Several years ago I got one on Arizona. It was 5-stars plus. Excellent. The best. The one on Ireland was so-so. This one was so-so as well. Not much "inside" information. What I got from this book I could have gotten from any other travel book. In fact, I need to get another book because this one fell short. Sorry Lonely Planet, but it did. I counted on you for information I could not get anywhere else and you didn't deliver.

This is a detailed, user-friendly guide that puts a great deal of information at the traveler's fingertips. It breaks the Northern California coast into sections or areas and each section is broken down into towns, things to do, etc. It also gives distances and driving times between different cities and towns. The weblinks are also fun and handy and the travel tips are great. Thanks, Lonely Planet, and thanks, Amazon!

Although it's going a bit upstream in recent years, LP guides are still the best out there and North Cali just did what we needed it to. Maybe adding a chapter on Silicon Valley would be nice and dropping city of Napa (that's just not what I call a invigorated lively and interesting town, sorry :D)

To much writing. No photos o references. I deeply recommend a different book or travel guide.

Used it recently and found it helpful. I had good success with most of the recommendations and appreciated the honesty of the reviews.

Review

"...a remarkable document of universal interest.... a tour de force, a wonderful, entertaining and informative book." -- Abraham Verghese "...dazzling.... What you'll see through her eyes will startle and amaze you." -- Marilyn Yalom The New York Times "The revolution already has a manifesto in the form of the ebullient Woman: An Intimate Geography. There are other female-positive books hitting the stores - but it's Angier who most decisively lifts the concept of the human female out of its traditional oxymoronic status. You gotta love a self-described female chauvinist sow who writes like Walt Whitman crossed with Erma Bombeck and depicts the vagina as a Rorschach with legs. Woman is a delicious cocktail of estrogen and amphetamine designed to pump up the ovaries as well as the cerebral cortex. " Time Magazine "In Woman, Angier wields her poetic scalpel to explore female biology, and the result is awesome."—Dr. Susan Love, Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book "[Angier] is my kind of feminist. Unlike, say, Catherine MacKinnon, she has a sense of humor about the war between the sexes. .... It is the open-mindedness of Woman that is so beguiling. Natalie Angier encourages us to celebrate the diversity of human nature and to realize that the process of cultural evolution is only just beginning."—Erica Jong, The New York Observer "O joy, O rapture unforeseen! Natalie Angier's fascinating book about the female body is a hilarious romp through, well, our innards. In a deliciously irreverent, energetic, and clear writing style, she demystifies and de-mythicizes women's anatomy and biological workings. Along the way, Angier leaves no metaphor unexplored....She reveals the mysterious universe of women's bodies for even the most scientifically impaired souls. Like the evolution she describes, Angier is self-selecting in what she writes about, but her passion for what make us gals tick is infectious. Her explanation of chromosomes veritably sings. Woman: An Intimate Geography will leave the reader, male or female, in sheer awe of the complexity and power of women's bodies."— Ms. Magazine "A delightfully mischievous yet serious book on the biology of the female body. Mischievous in that the science is interpreted in terms of modern feminism. It is a great read." — Phillip Sharp, MIT professor and Nobel laureate "A delighted and delightful book, scientifically intelligent, politically astute, and replete with the intense complexity and fascination of biology. The writing is wonderful and the humor and sensibility are as rare as they are welcome."—Perri Klass, M.D. "Woman is so captivating I couldn't put it down. It is jam-packed with fascinating, carefully researched facts I never knew before about how we women work. Best of all, Angier's abundant sense of humor and colorful writing style make this an irresistible read for everyone interested in women's bodies and women's health."—Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D., Strong Women Stay Young "In this witty, learned, adventurous book, Angier gives feminism a cheerful, evolutionary twist. Her deflation of the 'new science of evolutionary psychology' is a brilliant combination of hard science, humor and common sense exactly right."—Katha Pollitt, The Nation "Angier has brought both her considerable intellect and wry sense of humor to this book. The result is brilliantly accessible and wonderfully subversive."— Dr. Christiane Northrup, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom "Having occupied a woman’s body for nearly sixty years, I didn’t think any book would have much to teach me. How wrong I was!" — Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, ethologist and author of The Hidden Life of Dogs "Passion and intelligence meet in a gorgeous book about what it means to be a woman today, yesterday, and forever. Herein lies a fund of knowledge beautifully conveyed, as well as questions that have yet to be answered." Kirkus Reviews "It's hard not to sound effusive about Woman: An Intimate Geography, since it's fabulous. Angier's book contains more facts about women than anything I've read since the Boston Women's Health Collective published Our Bodies, Our Selves in 1973. My advice about Woman is, get three copies, one for the beach, one for the bathroom and one to read under the covers with a flashlight." Elle "To read Woman is to banish the gods of negative body image. It is transformative in the way Our Bodies, Our Selves was in the '70s, and no less radical. In fact, if Our Bodies, Our Selves has become the bible of women's bodies, let Woman: An Intimate Geography be our Shakespeare." Mirabella "It's exhilarating to follow Angier's subversive logic as she dismantles the misogynist mythologies once advanced as the scientific gospel of the female body and replaces them with theories more congenial with the female soul....Angier's brilliant and witty fantasia will inspire women to believe in their powwers." Boston Globe "One knows early on one is reading a classic—a text so necessary and abundant aand truuuuue that all efforts of its kind, for decades before and after it, will be measured by it. ... After a careful reading of this essential book, men should pass it along to someone they love-—their sons, daughters ... lovers and spouses. For a fresh look into the life's sciences ... and the pure pleasure of language in service to the facts of life, Angier's Woman is as good as it gets."— Thomas Lynch, Los Angeles Times "The chief manifesto of the new 'femaleist' thinking, this ebullient and provocative treatise on women's bodies reads like a mixture of Walt Whitman and Erma Bombeck."— Barbara Ehrenreich, TIME cover story, "The Truth About Women's Bodies"

This is a GOOD nonfiction book, written by a journalist with a great sense of humor and fast-paced writing style. No matter how much you know about yourself and/or womanhood, every chapter will give you some astounding piece of information and a line or two to guffaw over. Can't miss on this one.

A book that every woman should read. It is well researched and documented. It describes who we are as a species and why we think as we do. It also compares us to the species closest to us showing similarities . Well written

the book is filled to the brim with exciting descriptions of biology/humanity/women/etc. angier writes with a concise and poetic style, begging you to continue readingshe does a phenomenal job dispelling various caricatures and stereotypes of femininity, drawing on a wide range of cultural and biological sources. i can't vouch for the reliability of angier's translations of scientific studies, but i greatly enjoyed them and she was comprehensive enough i suspect her main points hold up even if a few of the (many!) studies are not current/represented-accurately/etcas a fellow child of christian scientists (and unfortunately, like natalie, having a needlessly and prematurely dead father), i greatly appreciate her fresh-eyed look at the fields of medicine and biology.. a rare and exciting perspective, imootherwise/overall i found the work most compelling for its insight into humanity and biology at large, and while its woman-centricity makes a good catalyst for this discussion, i found it regressive at timeson page 374, angier quotes patricia gowaty ->"all of these strategies and counterstrategies are going on in real time, so that we have responses associated with learning and experience rather than as a result of coded genetic modules.. the ecological problems that one sex has to solve are produced by the other sex. nothing is fixed. until we incorporate that notion, of the dynamic and dialectic pressures underlying human mating systems, we'll never get to the real meat of human behavior, and we'll continue repeating the extreme, and extremely boring, parodies"wow!! but rather than employ this dialectic perspective, angier simply states it (at the end). she does an astounding job of connecting a huge number of exciting topics - nominally a discussion of womanhood, and effectively one of humanity - but she digs her heels in for the sexual tug-o-war, most noticeably by floating casual/negative/frequent male stereotypes. a particular zinger (p251) reads ->"men do not live as long as women do, after all, and the disparity in lifespan applies globally. maybe they don't have to live as long. or maybe they don't want to. maybe they get tired of losing their hair, and of the political pomp of the hunt, and of making bad jokes about their mothers-in-law"try substituting "men" and "women" along with your most despised of the tired-female-stereotypes, and it's a career finisher (in some circles)gowaty's transcendent approach would make a significantly more powerful/shattering/foundational work (imo). but, it's still a great (5 star!) read - and i highly recommend it to anyone who's intrigued

BEAUTIFUL and intelligent book, would recommend to ALL women (and men!) Extremely interesting and important information about the history of women's bodies, including science. Learned a lot and made me appreciate my body more.

A great addition to rhe women's health care area of my home library.

This author is absolutely amazing. The way she writes about women makes me feel proud to be one. It takes you everyone across the landscape of womanhood. And it changes your relationship to your own femininity for the better. Love this love this love this.

I have loved this book since I happened upon it in a random used bookstore in Seattle several years ago, cover all bent and torn and lots of illegible writing dispersed throughout the pages. This combines everything I love and need in this world. Angier is a fantastically talented writer, and can make a description of roadkill into a love story for the masses.

Angier writes in a way that speaks to women of all ages, experiences, and classes. The information flowing from the pages of this book blew my mind; and I had always considered myself fairly well-informed about my body, and how it worked. Turns out, I didn't know squat. She poses facts, theories and ideas in a way that is provocative, yet easy to digest. At times she can get a little wordy, perhaps a bit "out-there," with her suggestions and explanations. But I find it humorous, even endearing, as I can definitely see where she is coming from. She wouldn't have been able to hide her femenist agenda even if she wanted to, and while other authors might have allowed this to serve as a detriment to their work, Angier's only enhances the message(s) she is trying to convey.I think it's a fabulous book that every single woman should read. I think it should in fact be required reading in school, right up there with "Our Bodies, Ourselves." Raging against the male-dominated field of science with political motives is one thing. But at the very least, modern society has shown us that our young women, generation after generation, are in desperate need of better educations about how their bodies work. I think this book is a good first step.

This book was very helpful in minor/basic procedures. Great for a student or a practitioner going into urgent care/ER. Step by step instructions with helpful pictures. I will definitely be keeping this book when I am done school.

There is adequate information on some of the procedures covered, but it seems to have a limited information and pictures on others.

Good resource for those needing to learn procedures.

Great reference for my wife, a nurse practitioner.

bought for school, an improvement would be to have color pictures

I wish I had returned this book, the graphics in which they are showing the procedure and what to look for are black and white. Poor lighting on some pics I can't even see what they are showing.

Excellent book, easy to read. Great resource.

Great for NP school!

Review

Thomas C. Oden — editor of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture series "The most thorough biography of Charles Wesley available. It is based on rigorous knowledge of the extensive primary sources (journals, poetry, hymns, letters, ephemera), and it establishes John Tyson as the preeminent living interpreter of Charles Wesley. An inspiring and informative read, this book will be an indispensable addition to the library of any serious student of the Wesleys."Paul Chilcote — Duke Divinity School "John Tyson's biography of Charles Wesley, the great lyrical theologian of the Anglican heritage, bears all the marks of a quarter century of sustained study. Balance, more than anything else, characterizes this accessible yet richly textured portrait. History never dominates theology. Tyson intimately connects the profoundly personal dimension of Wesley's journey of faith to the two communities that shaped his life and poetry — his family and the Methodist societies. Wesley's hymns birthed Methodism as much as any other force and certainly remain his greatest legacy, but Tyson's judicious use of material from Wesley's letters, journals, and sermons adds color and texture to his portrait. Would that more people knew about Charles Wesley — an amazing herald of love divine. If you do not know Wesley, this is a good place to start. If you seek to know more about him, this volume will enrich your knowledge and love of this ‘sweet singer' of Methodism."Ted Campbell — Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University "A very well written, accessible biography by a scholar steeped in the Charles Wesley texts. . . . What is especially appealing in this book, beyond Tyson's mastery of the texts, is his carefully nuanced account of Charles Wesley's relationships with family, friends, and colleagues in the evangelical revival — an account of friendships so strong that they could persist through deep and publicly stated theological differences. . . . A delight to read. Highly commended to readers."Choice “Readers will be delighted with this insightful biography. . . . Highly recommended”  Hymn “Tyson’s biography is an accessible and rewarding addition.”  Reformed Theological Review “This book will fill out readers’ understanding of Charles Wesley as a person and make us even more receptive to the huge musical and spiritual legacy he has left behind.”

The book on Charles Wesley is an excellent book, presenting Charles Wesley's thought. Those of us who study "Wesley" normally are studying John Wesley, not his brother Charles. For me this was a good read because I have read and written about John, but not Charles. He gives plenty of examples of the thinking and theology of Charles as well as quotes from many of his poems. The book takes you through the life of Charles and his many battles, both theologically and organizationally with the development of the Methodist Church. This is a book to keep in your library.J. Robert Ewbank, author "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the 'Isms'"

Once again the author comes through with a readible and well rounded account of Charles Wesley. Highly recommended.

This is thoroughly researched and well written. Charles Wesley would be a valued friend or an irritating acquaintance. He was warm in friendship, but he also could be an unbending Tory. He was truly a man of the 18th Century. However, he had a spiritual side transcending that.

thorough but engaging life of "the other wesley" - Wonderful to learn more about how significant he was in the Anglican renewal movement

I have carefully read this volume and found it to be a classic re the life and ministry of Charles Wesley.

Just beginning to read it but so far it sounds like it will be very useful.

great

Excellent study on Charles Wesley from Dr Tyson. Well worth the read and insight from a Wesley scholar. Thank you.
