You can't do better than Marjorie Standish. Great cookbook for beginners as the recipes are easy with ingredients most people have. However, as a seasoned cook, it is still my go to cookbook with great tried and true recipes!!
Well known to most New England cooks, Marjorie Standish's cookbooks are a great source. Have known many a person who heads out to the freedom of their own apartment who got her books as a housewarming gift. Sometimes, more than one set. :)This cookbook is a must have for anyone who loves New England cooking. I had them when they first came out, and when I lost them during a move, made the effort here to replace them. That says a lot in itself. Marjorie's books are entertaining and well laid out. The only critique would be...why didn't see make more than she did. I only know of the two, this being the first. If you can get your hands on one, buy it. If you can get your hands on TWO, gift one to a friend. Five stars, because we can't give more stars than that. :)
My mother has a copy, I have a copy, and now my soon-to-be-wed stepdaughter has a copy. Excellent time tested recipes. In our house we make notes in the margins for other users of the book. The scallop recipes are particularly good.
Lots of authentic regular recipes from Maine. This book contains recipes for the home cook and really brings the true taste of Maine to your kitchen. I looked at many other cookbooks that were more fancy and the recipes were always embellished ! Not what I was looking for.
THE definitive, down-home cookbook if you live in Maine. You won't find fancy recipes, exotic ingredients or recipes with 30 things to buy to make it.! Just good old-fashioned home cooking, the Maine way. If you like spicy, adventurous food, move on. If you want to cook like grandma used to, this is a great collection of recipes.
I've cooked out if this recipe book since I was a kid. Good home cooked favorites from my mom's book. Now I have my own and I'm cooking for my kids. Some of my favorites are fish chowder, scallop casserole, Indian pudding, chicken pot pie and chicken broccoli quiche. Every household should possess the Cooking Down Easy recipe cookbook. At least, and especially, the first one.
Bought this for my mother-in-law, I grew up with this cookbook and I already had a copy. Great tasting recipes that anyone Cook can do and even if you are on a budget. Nothing strange and exotic here. Easy to follow recipes too.
When my grandmother died, I was the lucky recipient of "her "secret recipes."(Cooking Down East : Favorite Maine Recipes and Keep Cooking the Maine Way).Everytime I make the Melt in Your Mouth Blueberry Cake, the Fish Chowder or the Lobster Newburg (the fancy one--of course!), I am momentarily returned to my childhood.The Red Flannel Hash is pretty terrific, too.At last count, I had 273 cookbooks in my private collection, but these two are the ones I most often return to when I wish a taste of home. Unlike many others, they seem to spend a majority of the time on my kitchen counter, permanently dusted with flour, stained forever with tiny Maine blueberries.If you are looking for nothing fancy-schmancy, only exemplary "home-style cooking," then these are the best you will ever find.Thanks Nanny (and thanks Ms. Standish)
