Whether this book of color photographs accurately shows what Alaska really looks like, I don't know, because I haven't been there yet. But having finished it, I'm planning my trip!But I can say this is a great book of photographs of nature. Anyone who loves to look at photographs will love this book. Wolfe demonstrates that he is one of the greatest living outdoor photographers. His sense of light and composition is unexcelled. Almost every picture has a strong sense of line, either vertical, horizontal or diagonal. And the range of light is exceptional, often including in the same picture the darkest blacks and the brightest whites.The handling of sky is as sublime as that of any of the 19th century American landscape painters. I'm certain that there must be plain blue skies in Alaska but every one of Wolfe's skies has clouds that are fleecy, or glowering, or mysterious. And the light that falls on the landscapes illuminates them with a strange beauty whether casting deep, hard-edged shadows that make a rugged peak look even more majestic; or soft shadows that fall across a brush-covered hillside and create a subtle modulation of green; or the red rays of the magic hours of dawn and dusk.Occasionally his pictures take on a strange abstraction that requires a careful examination to discover what one is looking at, like the pictures of white ice floes on the surface of an inky-black river or the network of crevasses on a glacier with a few spots of emerald blue in the white field, where the snow has melted into a pond reflecting the sky.Wolfe is a master of color field photography. Consider the brownish, grayish web of fine lines with several smears of white across it that resolves into a portrait of musk oxen with white horns and muzzles. Or the white arctic foxes in the snow with a bare hint of orange on their undersides. Or the receding green hillsides distinguished only by differing textures with a tiny browsing caribou in the foreground.The text by Nick Jans is sometimes overly poetic and almost unnecessary given the photographs although explaining just what it is that makes tundra tundra has some interest. However when I turn the page to see just the top halves of the heads of two fierce little owls peeking at me with yellow eyes hidden amongst a row of wildflowers in the Arctic Wild Life Refuge, words disappear from my mind.Most people agree that Alaska is one of the last great wildernesses and that we are unlikely to see anything more exciting in our lives. Art Wolfe has captured the excitement of Alaska. He has also captured the excitement of great photography.

MY NEW-USED COPY WAS IN FINE SHAPE AND WHO WOULD COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRICE BUT A CHEESEHEAD. EXCELLENT PHOTOS OF ALL SUBJECTS RELATED TO ALASKA OF COURSE. I JUST WISH THERE WERE MORE PHOTOS BUT I'M GREEDY. A VERY EXCELLENT BOOK TO HAVE AROUND AND GREAT FOR ALL AGES.

I bought this book because the pictures looked increadable and I was hoping to see Alaska from a new point of view, and I was not disappointed. Most of the pictures in here are like I have never seen before. However there were more typical pictures in here then I thought there would be. I wouldn't probably pay full price for it because of that, however I would buy it again at the price I got it for (around 10.00). Very nice to have on a table top or to just pull off the bookshelf to look at for inspiration for various things. If you like Art Wolfe you will like this book.

I bought this for a dear friend that lived in Alaska many years ago. It brought back found memories of her time there (she lived in Alaska back in the 1940's). The photography is stunning and the author does a wonderful job describing all the different areas of Alaska. Having visited Alaska for a short vacation and experiencing the splendor and vastness of this great state, it is easy to see why my friend loved it so much and still talks about it often.

You feel like you are there big clear pictures.....awesome scenery, amazing animal picturesit makes you want to go to Alaska

Unlike Theroux's book, there's no bitterness, but more a sense of dislocation and existential confusion made bearable by looking at the world with good hearted wonderment and self-deprecating humor. He's a lost soul, sure enough, looking for something he doesn't quite find in the pages of the book, bonding long term only with his tent and his bike, but his personal story takes a back seat to the people and scenery he passes by as he circles his native land. A range of characters enlivens the tale, from the unhappiest man in England sitting at the northern end of the Lands End-John O' Groats trail, to passing a fully alive septuagenarian cycling round England in the opposite direction (at a much faster pace than the author), to a motley assembled family gathered at a farm turned flea market in Scotland, to a ferry man who pedaled (bikes and pedal boats) from England to Hawaii (concluding that crossing an ocean in a 23 foot boat or going back and forth a few hundred yards in a ferry is all the same if you just learn to live in the moment). You get a sense for the spectacular beauty of some of the more isolated spaces in Britain, as well as a feel for the hollowed out industrial centers and half abandoned working class seaside resorts left behind in the shift to a finance driven services economy. It's a book I think I will pick up again and reread in whole or part sometime.It's a picaresque tale of the road, but not so much a technical cycling book or a travel guide. The next time I travel around England I'll look through it before going, but it's not trying to do what Rick Steves or Lonely Planet do. In the same way, while to a touring cyclist many aspects of the long distance cycling felt true, it's not really a bike book, any more than Theroux's The Kingdom by the Sea: A Journey Around the Coast of Great Britain or Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island are mainly about the British railways. It's about Britain, and about a funny man trying to find his way, with the bike something more than incidental but not the point of the story.

This is an interesting book on many levels. A travel adventure, a bit of learning about British history and an update on the current state of the economy in various parts of Britain. Plus a how-to of off-the-beaten-path travel while cycling and camping, with a few gems of mostly undisturbed scenic places. And a bit of a meditation on the difference between people from the big city, London, versus those living in small towns. The author bicycled around the entire coastline of the UK which is much father than you might first think, because of all the bays and inlets - 5,000 miles he says. Along the way he encounter untold numbers of characters and lots of kind and helpful people.It's well-written too, the author is a professional journalist ( the Guardian ). A fun adventure. If you can't or won't ever make such a trip yourself this will give you a good feel for it.

I'm not done with this book yet, but I'm fascinated with it. I actually bought a copy in England, but gave it to my friend for his birthday. So, I had to purchase a new copy. The book was not on Amazon Prime and it took FOREVER to get. Okay, I'm used to 2 days; this book took over seven days. And I believe it was only coming from Chicago.I'm thankful that I have an English boyfriend, because some of the things said are confusing or mean something completely (and dirty) to Americans. I only wish the map had more locations on it instead of just the base maps. I found out so many places I want to visit next time I'm in the UK. The book also inspired me to do a similar coastal trip on my bike. I have a few people excited to participate.

Great book, I simply didn't want this journey to end.. what is especially good about the book is that the writer actually talks to people on the journey. Its not just about road numbers and place names, but also locals and black pudding... great read.

I've read several books like this, including several about the Lands End to John O' Groats trip. This book stands out for its distinct routing, and for the author's review of how the UK has changed since his childhood, as well as the contrast between normal city living and life on the road. Best of all is his appreciation of his homeland and fellow citizens. Well written. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it!

I followed his trip on a map. Amazing! I would love to know what he's doing now. I'm getting ready to do the End to End ride next year and this was a good introduction!

An amusing book that is well written, The writer apparently on the staff of a well known national paper the Guardian is at times a little crude in his language but the adventures are interesting and at times the reader needs a decent atlas.

A nice read. On the one hand light reading but on the other lots of tips on how to cope with our crazy life and be happy and settled at the same time. The book has prompted me to embark on my first tiny journey down the South Australian Coorong, naturally with the coast on my right side!

I learned more about my hormones reading this book. I think it is worth reading.Whilst this book does not go into great details as other hormone books I have read, it's a simple, uncomplicated introduction to the understanding of the sex hormones.

This is the 2nd book I have read by Dr John Lee concerning Estrogen Dominance and natural hormone replacements. The first was on Breast Cancer, Estrogen Dominance and Natural Progesterone Cream. I was so impressed with the 1st book that I wanted a 2nd more easy to read book to give to my daughter along with a jar of natural progesterone cream.Dr Lee has opened my eyes to the truth of women's health problems where most doctor's have failed. Estrogen dominance is a serious health concern for anyone living in our modern society. Petrochemicals from carpet, nail polish, plastic bottles and food containers, from lotions to shampoos, soaps, pesticides and birthcontrol pills are causing estrogen dominance. We are immersed in a sea of synthetic estrogens which are wreaking havoc on our bodies, our hormones and our minds. Breast cancer keeps on increasing, hysterectomies are a matter of routine, while prostrate enlargement effects 50% of men by 50 years old! Women experience menopause symptoms 10-15 years to early! Girls are entering puberty 4-6 years sooner than a century ago! Infertility is increasing and male sperm counts have dropped by 50% in the last 5 decades!! Something is seriously wrong, is a huge understatement!!!Please read everything you can to protect yourself and your family against the hidden and silent synthetic estrogens which are destroying and damaging the health of millions!! Diindolylmethane (DIM) supplements derived from brassica vegetables are one of the most potent supplements for detoxifying XENOESTROGENS which I use daily. So impressed I am with Dr Lee.s books that I have ordered two more and will write reviews on them as well.I also have been using the natural progesterone cream the last few weeks and have been sleeping much better along with the DIM supplements to remove excess estrogen. DIM may turn urine orange as the liver excretes excess estrogen. After 10 days of using both my energy levels dramatically increased! Experiment with progesterone to see what dose works best. This is THE book for people already using BHRT. I have been for years with several prescribers and no one could get it consistently right. This book explains the baseline dosages for all natural forms of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone CREAMS and WHY and how these amounts were reached.I have been prescribed, over the years, WAY too much estrogen and three days ago when I came back to earth thru this book, I began to feel much better by altering my doses. I measure now with tiny spoons, no more a dab of this or a squirt of that. The book is short and easy to follow and I even emailed the co-author with a question and was answered immediately.

This book is great for anyone in their 30's and 40's--before women go into menopause. Women are suffering from lack of energy and all sorts of problems and its largely due to some hormone imbalance. This book lets you know small steps that you can take to bring your balance together. I've used several suggestions from this book and my productivity has increased a thousand-fold. If you're 30 - 50, suffer from brain fog, or a lack of energy, check this book out BEFORE your primary care physician gives you a prescription for an anti-depressant!

Interesting book - but consider purchasing What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause if you are specifically looking for info about menopause. Most of the info on that topic contained in this book is covered in the other one. This book is more basic and isn't as in depth.

I have been through pellets and then torches and felt that it was too expensive and difficult. After some more research. I concluded that a simple low dose estradiol patch and progesterone cream (I had been taking oral progesterone) is the safest and most effective HRT. He helped me realize that estrogen is overrated and we typically think we need more than we really do. This is a much cheaper and simpler way to do hormones (my regular GYN prescribes the bioidentical patch). I a, next planning to get a saliva test. To date, I have only had a blood test.

This is the most up to date book on luxury retailing which can turn amateurs into pros, and pros into luxury experts. While most readers, including myself, may be tempted to dive straight into the retail operations details, do pay special attention to the authors' sequential approach to this subject matter: brand - supply chain - distribution models, and only then retail operations.

This is a great read for someone trying to quickly learn as much as possible about international fashion retailing. I love that it covers strategy, but also gets into practical examples, for example how a stores location on the north or south side of a street affects real foot traffic.

Insightful and informative for those outside luxury world

I found the book realistic, tangible and useful, not only explaining abstract theories, but often supporting theory with interesting examples.
