Mary Lefkowitz is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities emerita at Wellesley College. A recipient of the National Humanities Award, Lefkowitz is the author and editor of numerous articles and books, including Not Out of Africa: How Afrocentrism Became an Excuse to Teach Myth as History; Greek Gods, Human Lives: What We Can Learn from Myths; and Euripides & the Gods.   James Romm is the James H. Ottaway Jr. Professor of Classics at Bard College and the author of several books, including Dying Every Day: Seneca at the Court of Nero and Ghost on the Throne: The Death of Alexander the Great and the War for Crown and Empire. Outstanding! Beautiful, heavy, nicely designed book. The introduction is excellent, and the brief intros to each play are concise and clear. All the plays are translated with the greatest level of scholarship. This is a book both for the lay reader and the thoughtful scholar -- challenging but accessible, and an overall intelligence that is lacking in so many books that have 'ancient history' focus.I consider this one of the best books I've gotten in a while, no matter what the category.

I'd say it's the best translation of the plays I've read so far -- with some clumsy bits to provide the exceptions.

Everything about the choices of translation is thoroughly explained. The poetry was a bit lost in some of the plays, if one was to compare it with older translations. So for if one is looking to create ancient theatre scenes, some other translations could work better.

This book is an excellent selection of most of the major Greek tragedies. The translations and notes are truly outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the plays.

Very detailed in writing in the introductions of this well-written book. Very well translated and clear with the writing of the stories aswell.

Astounding to reread these plays after 60 years and find the new translation to refreshingly new that it would seem they were written just yesterday!

Mistakes are going to be made and recognizing responsibility for one's actions is always important.The Queen of Hearts centers around the lives of Zadie Anson, Emma Colley, and Nick Xenokostas. We're able to listen to Zadie and Emma's voices as well as the narrative involves both the past and their present when Nick comes back into their lives.Zadie and Emma became friends during medical school. They remain friends during residency and then as colleagues. They are both happily married with children. Emma is a successful trauma surgeon and Zadie is a pediatric cardiologist. They do share secrets and one topic is not up for discussion: Nick. During their third year of medical school, something happened that changed everything. As the story progresses, the reader is privy to this information.I was surprised to learn this was Dr. Kimmery Martin's debut novel. The Queen of Hearts had a nice flow, with an interesting plotline and multidimensional characters. I was happily surprised at the humor. So classic in med school. Distancing from a patient in order not to break down is a modus operandi to protect one's mind. It's necessary.I can't say the big reveal took me by surprise. I knew it from the beginning but I thought the author's delivery was perfectly accomplished. Jealousy and envy are both at the heart of this story. The question is: Are you capable of forgiveness?I would definitely read another book by Dr. Martin. I'm excited to see what's next for her.Cliffhanger: No4.5/5 Fangs

Wow! The Queen of Hearts is such a fun read! I was hooked from page 1, laughed out loud during certain points, and thoroughly enjoyed the suspense contained within its pages. I am a physician and trained in Louisville; so the flashbacks to 1999 were palpably real. It was wonderful to live vicariously through the main characters Zadie and Emma. I also loved the present day descriptions as the women face being physicians while tackling being wives and moms. The humor was awesome especially in dialogue by little Delaney, Zadie’s daughter. Buy this novel today—it is so much fun, impossible to put down, and the kind of book a person could read all night. (if I just didn’t have to go to work!) Lastly, TQOH really gets into not only romance and love, but friendship and forgiveness. The prose is spot on medically, funny and fun, but also heartfelt and poignant. I loved it!

Kimmery Martin's debut novel, THE QUEEN OF HEARTS, is engrossing, from the medical setting to the cast of characters There are some marvelous one-liners and three-year-old Delaney steals the show with her dialogue and actions. The story is told in two points of view and two timelines (the present and their third year of medical school) when one of them has an affair with a sexy chief resident. First we meet Zadie, a part-time pediatric cardiologist and full-time mother with a loving, but largely absent spouse. Her chapter is followed up by Emma, Zadie’s best friend from childhood and whose friendship endures through medical school and beyond.As a physician, I enjoyed the true-to-life medical aspects and the human drama as well as the various subplots. My only complaint is that the two women, though the were childhood friends and physicians, had very different backgrounds. I realize that Emma worked hard to overcome her childhood poverty and Appalachian accent, but still I’d have liked a bit more difference in their voices.

I really enjoyed this book. It pulled me in right away and kept me there until the end. Always happy when I find a book like that. There were some good surprises through the book. Not so much the ending, which was predictable but it did end on a nice note. I enjoyed reading all of the hospital ER scenarios with great descriptions. Impressed this is the first book by this MD, now author.

I am so excited for my online friend and her first book. And I had a hard time putting it down.There was definitely more shenanigans than I experienced in medical school, but maybe that was because I had no interest in surgery. Anyway, this book tells the story of what happens when the past comes to light and when secrets That were thought to be dead and buried come to life.I like the juxtaposition between today and the past in medical school, and how thoughts and feelings are made to come to th surface.I am not sure, however, that I would be as forgiving as the main character Zaide. And yet, as a female physician, I can understand her forgiving her best friend. Life can be pretty lonely as a female physician. You don't quite fit in with the other kids' mothers,so to have a friend who has been through it all with you, who is also a mother and physician, well it is hard to throw it away. I enjoyed Kimmery Martin's first book and look forward to her future writing.

This book is so much fun to read! I loved how the 2 main characters each had such distinct “voices”...and how the beauty of their friendship, even with its flaws, unfolded. I couldn’t put it down. Don’t miss this one!

This book is all over the place, but I don't read Camus for coherency. I read Camus to get into a Camusian state of mind, to see things as meaninglessly as he does. Mersault lives for nothing; he appreciates the night and the sea, but knows they're meaningless too. He lives and meets death with open hands, because it too is meaningless, and that only makes his life more free and beautiful. This book was not meant to be published, which allowed Camus to be less organized, but also less reserved, and provides another rare opportunity to glimpse into the ways of the absurd man who is detached from life and lives for nothing, and that is enough to happily fill his heart, at the cost of unrelenting effort to will consciousness and lucidity.

Camus reveals a lot about his actual life and his earlier thinking in this book. It is astonishing that this book was one of the first books he had ever written and yet it is executed as if he had written it in his later years. The story, while choppy and jumps from one place to another, is still an easy ready and the characters are believable. It is, however, hard to have sympathy for any of the characters including the protagonist.This is important because this book has a lot in common with The Stranger. In the The Stranger one does feel some sympathy towards the protagonist as towards the very end when he has his awakening but is about to meet his end. In this story the protagonist has a similar fate but you do not feel as sympathetic towards the protagonist.In all, I would recommend reading this book before you read The Stranger. If you have already read The Stranger then you will for sure want to pick up this book to see the evolution of Camus' ideas lead up to that classic novel.

While "A Happy Death" has some outstandingly vivid and descriptive passages, the somewhat weak and incoherent structure and underlying ideas make this a somewhat less rewarding read than The Stranger or The Plague. The autobiographical aspects and the clear influence of this unpublished work on "The Stranger" do make this of interest to the reader already familiar with Camus (and the afterword and end notes provide interesting detail and context for the student), but I wouldn't recommend this to the unfamiliar as an introduction to his work.

Camus' book "A Happy Death" was never published in his lifetime. Camus was very specific and deliberate as to when he would publish what. This novel, the first written by Camus, has been published after being reclaimed from his papers.The question that comes to mind then, is "Why did Camus never publish this work?" It seems that the book was a transitional writing for Camus. It allowed him to move forward from the life he had always thought about, to the life he believed he lived in, that being an "existential" existence.In reading the book, one finds that Mersault, the protagonist, seems to have too many moments of happiness as compared to other protagonists in Camus' other publications. This in fact, is probably an autobiographical reflection of Camus' early life, and the book, a work to allow him to metamorphosize, transform his vision into what came next, "The Stranger."The beauty of the novel is recognizing this transition and then, with such recognition, comes the ability to apply those thought patterns and feelings to Camus' later works, seeing how he transformed from a "regular" human being, to an "existentialist" one who has the feeling of being unique, and apart from others and the world around him.The book gives valuable insight into Camus' mental process as he moves from where he was, to where he will go. For Camus readers, the book is truly a MUST. And for anyone with an interest in the "Existential" genre, it is truly an enlightening piece of literature.

This book, published after Camus's untimely death, has been alleged to be an early edition of THE STRANGER. A HAPPY DEATH is a longer read than THE STRANGER, but goes into a lot more depth as the main character undergoes an existential journey. Once the novel concludes, it is immediately apparent why it was titled as so. I won't give any spoilers, but I highly suggest the book to lovers of Camus or anyone interested in various dogma's of existentialism. This book seems to imply that life is about finding your own happiness, of course without reading like a self-help/inspirational book. Camus is an outstanding writer and one of my personal favorites.

This is a wonderful retelling of the revival by the people who witnessed the work of the Holy Spirit. Very inspirational. I have the Kindle version so I am not sure how many pages it runs, but it is an easy read and thoroughly engrossing.

I very much liked this and it's consistent with all of the other (many) accounts of revival that I've read. May the Holy Spirit come down in power and visit us once again...

This little book tells the story of the Hebrides like nothing I've ever read.It draw me to faith to believe that God will do it again, in me, my church, and my city.

What an encouraging account of revival. May we live with expectation for more of this in our time. These stories are gems for the church.

Must admit, read many reports of these revivals, some by Duncan himself, but this one I felt added some extra little details, especially the statements made by first hand people affected by the revival. Definately worth the read.

A stirring account of the events surrounding the revival in the Hebrides. I find it impossible to read this book and fail to be compelled to pray for revival. Theologically it offers a welcomed Calvinistic tension of the sovereignty of God to the Arminian perspective of stepping out in faith.

Revive us again Lord like you did in Hebrides. Do it one more time for us! We are thirsty and dry and only you can satisfy. A great source of encouragement for those who are looking for the move of God.

i own all of Vance's sci fi novels, and probably a dozen GURPS game books. This one was a great read - as always with GURPS you have to wonder how often the gamebooks turn into actual games, but with this one I will say that if i ever get the opportunity to play it i will jump at the chance. The one caveat is that per Vance's request as a concession to the limeys the name "Wankh" became the "Wannek" in this game book, which is a little strange to a longtime reader of the original yankee version of the novels but easily ignored. Otherwise the game book is true to the novels, and provides a wonderful gazetteer of Tschai. The adventure ideas are good, and the game play is typical GURPS (which is to say, fairly easy to understand and seems easy to play - but the book is worth a buy/read even if you never play it). All in all a great read for any fan of the novels. EDIT: So years after I bought this, I have to say that it has really great artwork too. I can't read the novels without imagining the alien races looking exactly like they are depicted in this book, and I find myself pulling it out all the time when I start thinking about the Pnume, etc. If anyone ever plays it, please invite me! :-)

My 11-yr old loved following all the different paths in this Choose Your Own Adventure book, and learning about the grueling Iditarod! Kids can choose their dog team, their routes, and what to do in emergency situations (and yes, sometimes the outcomes are pretty dire--what a great way to learn about the consequences of our decisions in a "safe" environment). With 43 choices and 19 endings, and chock full of information about this intense competition, "Surviving the Iditarod" is a great addition to any home or school library!

Loved this chapter book. A great number of choices for different adventures. The writer has a great grade school voice. This book will be good for girls or boys. High quality binding, which is great because it can be read over and over with different endings.

This book provided my son and I with multiple days of bedtime reading as we kept starting over and trying a different combination of choices. Some of the choices gave us serious anxiety! Not only was the book interesting and informative, but I appreciated how my son used critical thinking and reading comprehension to use the clues given to try and make the best choice moving forward. It was such fun, we will certainly keep this author on our radar for future books.

My kids and I loved this book! It's a must for anyone who has any interest at all in dogs, dog sled racing, or Alaska. My eight and six year old were fascinated and of course the "choose your own adventure" is always a winner. Highly recommend.

Do not purchase this book. It contains inaccurate information about the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Author also did not seek copyright approval.

This was a very entertaining book for those who enjoyed The Paris Architect or A Perfumer's Secret. It alternates stories from the perspective of Grace Monroe, young upper class London wife of the 1950's and a poor young orphan Eva D'Orsey, originally from France, whose story plays out beginning in the 1920's. The fates of these two are connected when Grace discovers she has been named the sole heir of Eva, recently deceased. The fact that Grace has never heard of Eva provides an intriguing mystery. The switching of settings, historical periods and society perspectives makes for a very entertaining story, especially for those fascinated as I am by tales of Europe in the years leading up to the Second World War. Lyrical descriptions of perfumes and the process of creating them add almost a spiritual element to the novel. It certainly made me think about the world of fragrance in a whole new light.

I enjoyed the story. I liked the characters and the way the tale is unraveled. The one thing that I did not like were the grammatical errors that any editor should have caught. Simple things like using the wrong suffix on the right word or the wrong gender pronoun. I realize it has little bearing on the story itself, but they're glaring to me and most annoying.

I must admit that this title did not strike me as very interesting, yet it was odd enough to make me curious. I ended up completing the book in one day, and enjoyed it very much. Although the story is predictable In some ways it is a story well told.The characters Drew me in. I enjoyed the information, or maybe the Word is philosophy, about the complex power In our Unique sense of Smell. It is true that very core Memories are often linked to a scent, Transfering us back to that moment...I did thoroughly Enjoy the 'final pieces' of the puzzle, leaving (almost) no questions unanswered. ...I read For pleasure, and also For enlightenment....this Book came through on both counts.

This storyline had a little bit of promise but the pages were filled with errors of all types! Grammatical errors, spelling errors, you name it - sometimes several on a page. Very distracting and made me feel that I had not purchased a quality product at all. How do these books get published in this condition?

I do not like rape books. This is set during a time and location that is not glamorous. Nazi times in France. How people of title and influence used this young maids gifts. The story ends with why Grace was left with wealth and how her birth mother protected her wealth for the child she was not able to have because she was oy 15. Since Grace was married it would have been nice to see her stand up to her cheating husband but that does not happen the story just ends with her having choices but a very Controlling cheater is now wanting her to be apart of his life againI would be ok if there was a book 2. The entire book was pretty much just answers to the connection of the characters no result as far as what choices Grace makes. So I would not recommend unless the author is planning on a book 2 with Grace and her navigating her situation.

I had high hopes for this after reading the first beautifully written scene and indeed the writing is good throughout. The descriptions of perfume are the best part of the book, which is not great considering a story with such elements should have been moving. I am an emotional person, and I didn't come close to shedding a tear for any of the main characters. In fact, by 80% I was getting irritated by their shallowness. Grace's purchase of an expensive dress does not make a her a transformed woman. In fact, she seems sort of dim when she signs a business deal without reading the terms. That's not admirable. It's just stupid. Eva's act of vengeance against a woman who betrayed her disgusted me. The last ten percent almost made me change my mind and give this four stars. There were some well written scenes with emotion there, but it was really too late for me to connect with these unlikable characters. You learn that Eva does some heroic, perhaps even self-destructive, things to save her friend, but given the outcome, it comes off as pointless. And why mention her disappointment that Andre doesn't sleep with her anymore? He's gay. We know that from the start and so does she. The romance between Grace and the lawyer was completely unbelievable. There was little to lead up to that. The husband was written off in one sentence. And the father of Grace should not have been introduced in the last ten percent of the story. Again, it's just too late for me to care. I feel like the author focused too much on what wasn't important and not enough on developing what could have been a great story. This was really a 3.5 stars for me.
