Review

“Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm deftly have gathered strong new translations from Frank Nisetich, Sarah Ruden, Rachel Kitzinger, Emily Wilson, as well as from Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm themselves. There is a freshness and pungency in these new translations that should last a long time. I admire also the introductions to the plays and the biographies and annotations provided. Closing essays by five distinguished classicists—the brilliant Daniel Mendelsohn and the equally skilled David Rosenbloom, Joshua Billings, Mary-Kay Gamel, and Gregory Hays—all enlightened me. This seems to me a helpful light into our gathering darkness.”—Harold Bloom   “The reception of Ancient Greek theater is as lively as it’s ever been in its 2,500-year history, both on the stage and on the page. Thanks to these sixteen brilliant new renditions by five leading scholar-translators, the three great Athenian masters of tragic drama, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, speak to us once again in powerfully contemporary accents on such fundamental issues as gender, religion, and democratic politics.”—Paul Cartledge, author Democracy: A Life   “The Greek Plays is destined to become a perennial collection, essential reading for students, scholars, and lovers of Greek tragedy alike. This engaging compilation imbues all the ancient plays within its pages with new life by offering rich, informative historical, literary, and cultural context and fresh, accessible translations by some of the most talented classicists working in the field today.”—Bryan Doerries, author of The Theater of War: What Ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today

I perhaps missed this in the book description, but the 16 plays are as follows with translations by James Romm, Sarah Ruden, Frank Nisetich, Mary Lefkowitz, Rachael Kitrzinger and Emily Wilson:Aeschylus: The Persians ((Romm) The Oresteia (Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers and The Eumenides) (Ruden) Prometheus Bound (Romm)Sophocles: Oedipus the King (Nisetich Antigone (Nisetich) Electra (Lefkowitz) Oedipus at Colonus (Nisetich)Euripides: Alcestis (Kitzinger) Medea (Kitzinger) Hippolytus (Kitzinger) Electra (Wilson) The Trojan Women (Wilson) Helen (Wilson) Bacchae (Wilson)

Outstanding! Beautiful, heavy, nicely designed book. The introduction is excellent, and the brief intros to each play are concise and clear. All the plays are translated with the greatest level of scholarship. This is a book both for the lay reader and the thoughtful scholar -- challenging but accessible, and an overall intelligence that is lacking in so many books that have 'ancient history' focus.I consider this one of the best books I've gotten in a while, no matter what the category.

I'd say it's the best translation of the plays I've read so far -- with some clumsy bits to provide the exceptions.

Everything about the choices of translation is thoroughly explained. The poetry was a bit lost in some of the plays, if one was to compare it with older translations. So for if one is looking to create ancient theatre scenes, some other translations could work better.

This book is an excellent selection of most of the major Greek tragedies. The translations and notes are truly outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the plays.

Very detailed in writing in the introductions of this well-written book. Very well translated and clear with the writing of the stories aswell.

Astounding to reread these plays after 60 years and find the new translation to refreshingly new that it would seem they were written just yesterday!

Excellent edition of the classic Greek plays.
