Kluane National Park is located in the southwest angle of Canada's Yukon Territory, where it abuts Alaska and British Columbia. Kluane National Park, together with adjacent Wrangell-St. Elias and Glacier Bay US National Parks, forms one of the largest wilderness areas in North America. It is distinctly remote, with access via the Alaskan Highway through northern Canada or through Haines, Alaska, by coastal ferry and road. It contains some very challenging and spectacular long-distance hiking opportunities. Vivian Lougheed's "The Kluane National Park Hiking Guide" provides an introduction to the area.Lougheed notes the history, climate, and characteristics of the park before plunging into an extended discussion about safety and health. As she rightly points out, Kluane National Park is a dangerous place, with numerous natural hazards in the form of wild animals and opportunities to freeze, drown, or fall to one's death. She divides the park into three areas to frame a descriptive narrative of the commonly used hiking routes. This is a very personalized guidebook, with sugggestions and comments based on the author's experiences and preferences, and an interesting selection of photographs.As other reviewers have noted, this hiking guide is not a sufficient resource by itself for travel inside the park. The sparse trail descriptions should not be considered a reliable guide for navigation. The area is lightly traveled and the few established routes may be only seasonally available. Hikers will need to rely upon detailed topographic maps, the ability to navigate under any and all conditions, and the latest updates on weather and terrain. Only those with the proper skills, experience, and preparation should move out of sight of the access roads."The Kluane National Park Hiking Guide" is cautiously recommended as an introduction to a remarkable wilderness area not well known outside the Pacific Northwest.
I have 35 years of backpacking, mountaineering, and climbing experience, and this is possibly the worst hiking guidebook I've seen. A hiking guide should be accurate, precise, and parsimonious-- this guidebook is none of these. We did the "Donjek A" loop, and basically gave up after a while trying to follow the guidebook (as it had wrong, misleading, and/or obscure directions, mixed in with a lot of irrelevant and uninteresting information), and followed the wildlife trails instead. Even the directions for Sheep Mountain (a day hike) were wrong and misleading (e.g. the north peak is not the highest). I suggest simply following the Parks information and maps instead of buying this guidebook.
