I enjoyed reading of this book, and will keep it around as a handy practical reference for equipment setup, patch cables and interconnect techniques. I found it to be presented in a logical and structured manner, yet written in a light and entertaining tone, peppered with a large number of photographs and useful diagrams. The inclusion of use and coverage of both digital and analog equipment is bound to keep the intimidation factor for new life stage technicians and casual users under control. Lastly, a large emphasis on safety and the hilarious diagrams are hard to miss and should keep everyone safe.

Great read for anybody working with sound equipment. I would also encourage leaders of mid to large size choirs to take a look at the chapters pertaining to sound checks,it would make the sound engineer's work that much easier. This is an inspiring book, not only because of the subject, but also because the author has an extreme sense of beauty as she follows Chekhov's life. She can get a prismatic perspective on the subject, from intellectual approach, to everyday life anecdotes, that gives a perception of the man not only as a main figure of literature, but as a regular man and what makes him a giant of his time.

Chekhov found the idea of autobiography "real torture," but here, in his voluminous letters to family, friends, patrons, lovers, and others, you find all you really need to know to enhance the charm of an exceptionally ordinary, kind, gentle, and talented artist and human being. If you've at all realized the exceptional skill and insight of his creations, read these letters! To do so is great pleasure.

While the current review is lovely, it's quite wordy for my attention span--I am sure some share my sentiments. Simply put: buy this publication if you like Anton Chekhov. The editor's autobiography and narrative is comprehensive, readable and not at all boring--the included maps are a nice touch and the composition as a whole is a stunning one. You will likely find it easy to relate to his writings or at least enjoy his prose, candor and humor. You will find many moments or evenings of enjoyment from taking a trip down Chekhov lane.

This is exactly what I was looking for, a collection of Chekhov's letters that I can read and learn from (I am a Creative Writing major).

Janet Malcolm's "Reading Chekhov: A Critical Journey" (2001) - a brilliant little book undeservedly maligned by some reviewers - sent me straight back to the book store for a biography of Anton Chekhov. I can report from this trip that the largest bookstore in South East Asia does not carry one single biography of Chekhov!Instead, I found "Anton Chekhov: A Life in Letters" (2004). And I did not regret it one bit. The book is the fullest collection of Chekhov's letters in English translation to date and contains 370 selected letters reproduced in full. It comes with a chronology of Chekhov's life, a very readable, splendid short introduction, suggestions for further reading, a helpful list of correspondents and four very useful maps. An index at the end of the volume assists in, among other things, finding references to stories and plays in Chekhov's letters.According to the editors, this book is also the first uncensored edition of Chekhov's correspondence in any language. Chekhov, a physician by training, called the facts of life by their name and took life's mishaps with a sense of humor. Later editors, more prudish and therefore considerably more boring, simply cut out what they called "rude language." Only after Glasnost, in the 1990s, the official portrait of Chekhov as a "decorous and refined gentleman with a stick, who never permitted himself to use racy language and who was rather pious and sickly, with little interest in women" (xv) was beginning to be revised.The editors point out that Chekhov "may have hidden himself in his literary works, leaving it up to his readers to puzzle out his point of view, and he may have had an aversion to talking about himself in public, but in his letters he could be surprisingly outspoken at times," (xxxv) and so it happens that his correspondence reads almost like the autobiography he always declined to write.Chekhov's letters illustrate why he is perhaps Russia's best-loved writer: "The qualities which first endeared him to Russian readers back in the 1880s are the same ones which explain his appeal today. He wrote no vast novels in which he attempted to solve the problems of existence [that would be Dostoevsky] or fathom the forces of world history [Tolstoy in "War and Peace"]. He had no particular axe to grind about how people should live their lives, but, like the good doctor that he was, he had a superb ability to diagnose what it was that prevented people from finding happiness and fulfillment and a unique talent for pinpointing it in a clear-sighted way that was a the same time immensely gentle and compassionate. He also had an infectious sense of humour and an unerring sense of life's ironies, which prevented his writing from ever becoming too portentous or sentimental." (xxxvii)The photo used for the cover shows a pensive Chekhov with a slightly mischievous smile playing around the corner of his mouth. Almost as if just then one of his famous quips had crossed his mind: "Medicine is my lawful wedded wife, and literature is my mistress. When I've had enough of the one, I can go and spend the night with the other."

About the Author

Martin Luther King, Jr., was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, the son and grandson of pastors. He graduated from Morehouse College and Crozer Theological Seminary, becoming at age 25 pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. from Boston University. In 1957 he and other civil rights leaders founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization he led until his death. A proponent of Gandhian principles of non-violence, he led many protests and demonstrations for civil rights, including the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 29, 1963, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, he continued to fight for civil rights, the eradication of poverty and the end of the Vietnam War. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN. Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., is the founder and president of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, an organization committed to fighting for social, political, and economic justice for people of all races, genders, and creeds. A two-time candidate for President of the United States, Rev. Jackson has been called the “conscience of the nation.” Rev. Jackson is also renowned for his efforts around the world to spread the promise of democracy, human rights, and peace. Rev. I love the Letter from Birmingham...it has had a great impact on me personally and goes beyond what we think of the work Martin Luther King Jr had done.It should be a MUST read for all of us!

One of the best books I've ever read! I have been purchasing books on black history to get a firm idea on what really happened since this information isn't taught in school. The details about how each event was perfectly calculated to have the most effect is the most interesting thing about this book to me. Such an inspiration and I have learned so much, Please buy this book and educate yourself.

This book will expose and explain all of American history that is deliberately being withheld from school curriculum. If you read this book you will suddenly become aware of why modern day society has reached its epidemic levels.This book will thrust you into activism. Dr. King was an intellectual far beyond his years. We have to be concerned with all humanity. My life is changed forever after reading this book!

I was raised to respect Dr Martin L. King. In a lot of black households, Dr Kings picture is right next to a picture of Jesus! People of my parents generation and before went through a lot to secure basic human rights- rights guaranteed by our constitution. Why is Martin a great man? He decided at 26 years old to lead a movement against the practice of JIM CROW that lasted almost 100 years after the civil war! He KNEW that this decision could lead to his death! The 13,14 and 15 admements didn't give blacks economic or political parity. It was so bad, especially in the south, that millions of blacks left their homes to find a better life up north- my grandfather being one of them.Martin could of lived a comfortable life but he saw injustice everywhere and he did something about it! My life and millions like me are better off because of this man! This book explains his view points in beautiful detail and why he couldn't stop the march to progress. His life and unfortunate death opened the way for any oppressed group to recieve equal treatment under the law. This isn't just black history; this is American history!!

A truly fine work by a remarkable man, Martin Luther King, engaged in revolution through the principles of direct nonviolent action. A great document on the civil-rights marches of the early 1960s, which includes Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail." This is necessary reading for anyone who wants to learn more about the civil rights events of the 60s.

It saddens me to say this but until I read this book, Dr. King was a man I had little knowledge about. I knew he was an important figure in American history. But I must admit before I read this book I had no idea how important he was. I got this book because it was a required read for a course in college. I thought it'd be just another boring read but once I got through the introduction I could not put it down. What a GREAT man! Strange feeling about reading this in this day and age; so little has changed. Many of the things he discussed in the abstract still prevail today. The specifics are different, the discrimination more creative (though still primarily racial in nature but also economic, sexual orientation, religious etc) but the attitudes, the leadership (political, cultural, social), society's willingness to tolerate the denial of the rights of others to maintain the status quo. All are present and thriving in today's world.

Though I lived during these amazing, historical events, I had never read any of Dr. King's books (except for excerpts). It was informative and moving to 'hear' Dr. King discussing what happened from his insider's perspective. Such an intelligent and thoughtful man, it was like being transported back in time.While I had expected the intellectual aspect of the book, I was delightfully surprised by the beauty of the actual writing! The entire book had a feeling of prose to me. For those who don't generally enjoy non-fiction, this book is a really pleasant read, which might seem akin to a historical novel.The events came alive and I remembered how amazing those times were. I read this for MLK Day 2013, and it was a perfect way to commemorate the occasion!(This really should be required reading in school...)

I love Jung's theories. They make a lot of sense to me where Freud's not so much. Cocaine kinda rotted Freud's ability to have good judgment although he hit on a few good points. Likely when he was sober. For me, Dreams are a huge thing in my life and within the superstitions of my family. Understanding how the mind works especially in the subconscious mind. With this book, I am now able to understand my dreams and what is going on in the background of my life/mind. I can now use my dreams to determine how I am doing in my everyday life and if I need to pay special attention to something that may be weighing heavy on my emotional mind. Basically understanding my dreams helps me to understand daily issues I may be experiencing. Loved this book.

This new reprint of Jung's classic dreams texts is as good as it gets for an introduction to Jung's writings on dreams, with a new preface and all the original images. No doubt about it, some of the essays are tough reading, this is not Jung-lite but it's perfect for my purposes -- I use it to teach graduate level dream studies.

The individual dreams presented in this book come originally from Jung's CW, but it is certainly a time saver to have the at hand in this single volume

The book is quite dense and hard to read compared to other Jungian works such as 'Man and His Symbols', 'Aion' etc, and other works written for lay readers such as by Robert Johnson. This is a book of translated abstracts from Jung's professional work. Even though it is written for such an audience and was done almost a century ago (language changes) it is none-the-less still accessable to those interested. It has an index which is always handy for referencing quickly.

I have only just received this book and have barely skimmed it. However, I can tell you that if you are accustomed to reading Jung it is fascinating, revelatory, and greatly illuminating in understanding the psychological differences in people so that one can better understand the bewildering problems of communication between people. Understanding your own psychological type helps you realize you don't constitute a "norm" for perception and understanding your mate's type enables you to understand where he's coming from.For one who is not accustomed to educated and/or academic writing it might be a little daunting to plow through.

This is a chronological selection of Jung's writings on Dreams. I found Campbell's Portable Jung to be a much better selection of writings.

If you love Jung you will love this book. A great read.

I am a total newbie to stringed instruments and it's been decades since I took piano as a kid. Though I'm taking weekly lessons at my local Folk School, I decided to buy this book, Ukelele Exercises for Dummies, because I remembered all those finger exercises I was forced to do by my piano teacher. We don't realized why we are made to do something until we grow up. Because of those piano exercises, I ended up with really great fine motor movement coordination. I figured that same concept could be applied to learning ukelele. So, when I'm not practicing my weekly chords/songs for the week, I work a few minutes from the book. I recommend this book for people like me who have the discipline to practice daily, even if just for 10-15 minutes. I LOVE this cute little instrument and find it very relaxing.

Ok this really IS a GREAT dummies book. I have bought a few dummies books and they are ok, but this one is hot! it is about an inch thick, and the pages are thin paper so there are a lot of pages, the printing is pretty small- can be a draw back especially with the riffs so small they are hard to read- but definitely not a deal breaker! There is SO much information in here, and it is very good information and explained in a way that is understandable. There are "pictures" for many riffs, exercises, songs, etc. so that you are learning by seeing how to do what he is talking about, also audio tracks to hear how it is supposed to sound. The book is broken down into parts, and those are broken down into chapters. He encourages you to look through the table of contents and pick something to study, not to read through the book from front to back. There are strumming patterns, picking patterns, finger style exercises, fretboard exercises-rock, blues and jazz just to name a few. And ideas and tips for exercising and learning how to become better in any area you want. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who is learning the ukulele!

This was my first ukulele lesson book (although I have a big head start having played guitar.) It helped me get into things very quickly, but the exercises also provide me a lot of depth and variation. From an instructional standpoint, it's much better than the "Ukulele for Dummies" book in this series.

Takes you from basics to all the things that makes the UKE fun. Chords, Strumming patterns, finger picking, how to get better. I own just about every Uke book out there. This one is so knowledge dense that I could probably get rid of half my library. If you get this book and do the exercises, you will gain the chops and the confidence. I wish I had found this one first. Would have cut massive amounts of time in my progression. Truly a MUST HAVE. If you are giving someone a uke, as you always should, give them a copy of this book as well.First rate, can't love it more. Extremely well done!!

My friend can pick up almost any instrument and play it. When I asked him for his thoughts on an instrument I might be able to play he thoughtfully suggested the ukelele. When I asked why, he said, "it's only got 4 strings. Even you could play it. And, hardly anyone else plays one so nobody will know how awful you are." That said, I bought a Uke, bought a basic dummies book and commenced to amaze my wife ever evening with my strumming and singing (she would say, "torture her with my twanging' and croaking' "). After getting the basics down, that is, learning to strum, and memorizing the basic "must know" 15 chords you need, I bought this book. This is not a beginner book. Brett assumes some rudimentary knowledge but the lessons are well within the ability of a novice such as myself. There are a number of chapters covering, strums, chords, finger-picking (my favorite) and other more advanced techniques. The audio samples that come with the book (you have to download them) are great to play along with.If you are serious about improving your skills this is a great book.

This is an excellent book and collection of audio files. As you work through it, you can improve your skill tremendously. It is written in a way that it is useful for the very beginner to the more experienced player. Brett has a good and understandable teaching style. I would be a lot further along if I used this book more. I like the overall style of the "Dummies" books and this is a very useful book. Contains a lot of expertise and guidance. A bargain at any price. Highly recommended.

Though obviously not a songbook, it does include songs but unfortunately for many these include many Christmas carols and nursery songs like "Mary had a little lamb". The various sections on musical styles -- rock, jazz, blues, etc -- are very brief and do not include songs. This book does not really build on the "Ukulele for dummies book" but covers much of the same material at a very basic level. Generally, all the different topics presented -- strumming, scales, finger-picking, styles -- leave it to you to apply them to real musical situations elsewhere. If you know the most basic music theory and can read music you'll probably have a more enjoyable learning experience elsewhere.

I will post more as time goes on. So far I really like this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the ukulele. Ukulele for Dummies and Ukulele Exercises for Dummies go hand in hand and can be used together or by themselves. I have been glancing through the book and really like what I have read so far. If you want to improve you playing try this book out, you won't be sorry. Just wanted to let you know that this is bigger than Ukulele for Dummies, it is the same size as copier paper 8.5x11 and was surprised the size was different than Ukulele for Dummies. I bought this on Kindle before the book was even out because I didn't want to wait.

The book seems to be out of print. When I read it first about 15 years ago, it made a tremendous impact on my life: it had very simple explanations for problems that had puzzled me for years. It's slightly more academical than many self-help books. However, it's much more fundamental, and I highly recommend to anyone interested in why's (rather than how's).

This book will teach you so much about inherited behavior that it makes you want to read more.== Spoiler Alert(beginning) ==Let me give you an example of some fascinating thing you learn : You know how most of us are keen on fatty and sugary food, well the authors explained why is that so.Let's think back to our ancestors (cave men); back then, when a hunter killed an animal (let's say a giraffe) they couldn't storage the leftovers and after a while the giraffe would spoil. So what would be the wise thing to do back then? Well the best to do would be to eat as much as you could and store the extra food as fat in your body (you know those love handles).Now let's see why we inherited this behavior; the cave men (and women) who wouldn't overeat (what today we consider a wise thing, with reason) would die if there was a shortage of food, while those who put up some fat for the winter would survive. Now guess what, who do you think we came from? Of course we came from those who survived, the overeaters.The problem we have now is that society has change in the way that you don't spend 700 cal. to bring home some food, but instead about 0.5 cal. ordering a pizza through your phone. So society changed but our genes didn't!== Spoiler Alert(end) ==Anyway, that was one of the many many examples of behaviors in this book!

As I take time to write this review, I find that - as of this writing - 77 others have taken their time to write a review of "Mean Genes." This book has really struck a nerve with readers. It has tickled their funny bone as well as given insight into human nature, and most importantly to us, our own behaviors.Mean Genes is a very unique book in that it provides important information on an intellectual topic but is written in such a manner that it is easily readable by the general reading public. This one aspect has most impressed me with this book - It is not only informative, but it is also so damn entertaining! If for no other reason, this book deserves 5 stars!I am an avid reader of science books and am accustomed to reading complicated and dry material. Unfortunately, most readers will put down such a book before they actually learn anything. Mean Genes breaks this mold. These authors have used considerable skill to create a book that is a joy to read and still leaves one feeling that they have learned something useful.This is not a "self-help book" in the normal sense. It does give us insight into our own behaviors and why it is almost impossible to change some of those behaviors. Our only hope is our understanding of why things are the way they are. This offers us an opportunity to overcome our own genetic programming to some degree. And if not, we at least know why it is that way.But most importantly, this book makes the reader think. It helps us to take a second look at our own prejudices and assumptions. It provides a useful framework for examining behaviors. We get to think for ourselves about why things are the way they are and to reach insightful conclusions.A word of warning! Once you pick up this book, you will find it almost impossible to put it down.

This book is so insightful. I have been interested in psychology for several years now, especially evolutionary, and this book ties together everything I've been learning. And it's fun and easy to read. I couldn't put it down! I first got a copy from the library and liked it so much I'm buying my own. It's funny, straight forward, intelligent without being at all preachy or pedantic. The format is inviting, the topics totally relatable, the examples perfectly highlighted by analogies (which I love). It explaines the basis for everything my friends do--as well as myself!--and gives clear explanations for where all this crazy behavior comes from. I love it.I am a psychology doctoral student, but absolutely anyone would be able to read this and appreciate it.
