I received this book surprisingly fast and I was pleased with the condition of the book as well.The book itself is fairly technical but I would recommend this book to introductory students of philosophy. The arguments, in particular, don't expect the reader to be well-versed in logic, epistemology, or metaphysics. Of course, if familiar with the various disciplines will indubitably assist you in your comprehension of the book.Overall, this book adequately develops the concept of religious epistemology when attaining knowledge of God's exists. Enlightening and well-written I would propose as well. Good treatment of the debate.-RD

I ordered this book on a whim and am surprised that no one has reviewed it yet. I will do a more detailed review later, but have some review points for an interested reader:1. The main point of the book, that God does reveal himself to the world, but not on our terms, is salient. Sounds God-worthy. God exhibits His existence in a life submitted to him. We, morally committed to Christ's purposes, are the evidence to the world (and to ourselves)of God's existence. He builds on this point and gives the core idea a lot of substance. Well worth reading.2. Why four stars and not five? Frankly, Moser is an academian and writes like one. His sentence structures are too long and complex. I sometimes find myself re-reading a sentence many times to figure out what he's saying. The only reason I am working thru this book (about 2/3rds done) is because the content is rewarding and may in the final analysis be correct!3. This book creates a path that seems viable. The naturalists want the Christian world to confront them on their terms. When Christians debate atheists to provide objective truth for God's existence, they always get smeared. It's embarrasssing to watch the gyrations that Christians go through to prove God from a worldly aspect. This book provides an alternative viewpoint that respects God, respects our responsibility toward God, and works out faith in a realistic fashion.I'd like to hear the take of others on Moser's work. I find it a relief from the worn out apologetics found in popular Christian books. Ken

Moser (Professor & Chairperson Dept. of Philosophy: Loyola University, Chicago) relates epistemic issues to the evidence for the existence of God with masterly skill in "The Evidence for God: Religious Knowledge Reexamined." Moser, author of "The Elusive God," paints a far more textured picture of epistemology's crucial role in determining genuine evidence for the existence of the Christian God than the majority of contemporary apologists.Along the way Professor Moser attempts to deflate various arguments for theism that play down the ontic majesty of the true and living God. Additionally he cogently refutes naturalism with precision and care (pp. 46-84). His persuasive and inexpugnable contestations refuting sundry schools of naturalism alone make this volume worth purchasing. Professor Moser also convincingly discredits fideism as he provides the reader with a thoughtful case against blind faith.The book "develops volitional theism against the background that includes critical assessment of prominent competing positions" (Naturalism, Fideism, Traditional Proofs, Plantinga's epistemology - p. 45).The book's claims are launched with an erudite quote from H.H. Farmer: "Many questions are answered wrongly, not because the evidence is contradictory or inadequate, but because the mind through its fundamental dispositions and presuppositions is out of focus with the only kind of evidence which is really available" (p. 1).Moser controverts numerous forms of Naturalism including:- Quine's (p. 68-70)- Ontological Naturalisma. Eliminative ontological naturalismb. Noneliminative reductive ontological naturalismc. Noneliminative nonreductive ontological naturalism- Methodological naturalism in three dominant forms.All this within the context of a refutation of Scientism (pp. 76-87) while he opposes the empirical attempt to prove the existence of God (p. 87).The author rejects classical proofs (pp. 142-182) along with historical and evidential methods as systems that prove too little (finite data V. an infinite ontology: the God of Christian Theism), yet he admits to their possible psychological or aesthetic apologetic value (p. 160). The author also denies that Behe's irreducible complexity and ID science are epistemically satisfying approaches (p. 166-167).The often astute professor alogically and unbiblically rejects God's sovereignty in the salvation of souls and the enlightening of minds (pp. 131-142 and misc.). He builds a neurasthenic case for the divine call that results in "nonargument evidence of God's reality" not as "volitionally static" forasmuch as we need to "avoid ... a bias against evidence of the divine reality that comes from the volitional pressure of a transcendent call and the resulting transformation of a willing human recipient who thereby becomes a personifying evidence of God's reality" (p. 150). Nonetheless Moser's previous arguments against traditional proofs (finite, mutable, perishing material things lack the epistemic ability and ontic necessities to prove an infinite, immutable, imperishable God) cuts off the branch he's resting his arguments on: Christians become the "evidence of God's reality in receiving and reflecting God's moral character to others" (p. ix); inasmuch as Christians are also mutable and finite, thus under Moser's epistemic scrutiny, they fail to offer proof for the awesome infinite and immutable God revealed in scripture. The professor's argument provides the grounds that confute his own position.The author claims that the evidence that has epistemically virtuous rights streams from the personal, perfectly loving God who alone deserves our worship and obedience. He maintains that this is the only justifiable evidence because God is elusive and all that is within the cosmos is epistemically diminutive. The seeker should open his heart and find salient evidence for the reality of God in the lives of believers who exhibit the love that they have received from the Lord. I personally haven't met a fellow Christian who lived a life that is morally adequate enough to be proof for the existence of God; furthermore I have not observed the love of a believer that was so impressive as to compel one to believe in God. The only moral source of love that compels saving faith is found in Christ Jesus.Moser offers a formidable case against fideism and mysticism (p. 88-125), but his central allegation against classical & evidential proofs implies that he's one who rejects propositional and evidential proof, so he seems to slide into a type of moderate fideism himself, although he avouches "moderate evidentialism" (p. 135). He advocates the amorphous view that "God's reality is increasingly available and salient to me as I, myself, am increasingly willing to become such evidence--that is evidence of God's reality." This contention is his chief argument for Christian theism (p. 172).One reason Moser contends that God's existence cannot be proved in propositional apologetic terms is: God is epistemically veiled so the lives of believers are the only sufficient evidence that is available, moreover we need to "let God be God" (p. 28). God is concealed since "the reality of the God is knowable firsthand by humans on the basis of salient and conclusive, if elusive, evidence."The author endeavors to rebut the Reformed view of soteriology in relation to apologetic pursuits as he asserts that some "people assume that God would have a magic cognitive bullet in divine self-revelation whereby God guarantees that the divinely offered evidence of God's existence will actually be willingly received by humans. Sometimes this dubious assumption is clothed in talk of `divine sovereignty,' but this approach, in any case, involves a serious mistake" (pp. 33-34). However Romans chapter one informs the world that all men know that God exists but they suppress the truth in unrighteousness; furthermore the totality of holy writ discloses the idea that God is the agent who opens the human heart and calls men to Himself by grace alone.The professor states: "Conclusive firsthand evidence for divine reality is, I'll contend, purposively available to humans, that is, available in a way, and only in a way, that accommodates the distinctive purposes of a perfectly loving God. The latter purposes, we'll see, would aim non-coercively but authoritatively to transform human purposes to agree with divine purposes, despite human resistance."Moser's work may not have compelling positive and direct proof for theism but he does present an extremely effective refutation of naturalism and fideism along with a moderate challenge to the traditional arguments for God's existence. Even though I affirm a dissimilar apologetic method and epistemic approach, I enjoyed this volume immensely and gained additional insight in ways to defend the faith.My method advocates a certain argument for the existence of God. The book gives an excellent show of various styles and the processes the artist goes through to assemble their drawing, however if you are looking for an in depth explanation or tutorial of style this is probably not what you were hoping for. I enjoyed the book, because it does explain technique behind pictures. It is not a step-by-step guide by any means. This reads more like an art textbook to explain theory to you than a how-to-draw book, which I prefer.

Love this series. I have both Vol 1 & 2. Tutorials are well written and easy to follow. This is a great source for inpiration and maybe to try out a technique that you havent used before. I am a Computer Graphics mayor with a Focus in Multimedia. Some of the techniques used here I have used for set design in green screen productions. So this is a good book to help explore techniques, you just need to find the time to do it.

Nice and glossy, but thin on actual useful details. I paid too much for this.

A second great volume from 3d Total! I enjoy the heavy page graphics that show clearly what the artists are doing, the concepts and directions they look at, and a good step by step on their technique. I can't wait for volume 3!

Digital Painting Techniques:Volume 2 had a few interesting pages that was not just about painting and drawing, but about the artists' thought process. The book was organized into different chapters specific to certain techniques, ie. creating brushes, painting on a 3d model, drawing spaceships, using photo references etc.The con of this book was there were some tutorials that were not as detailed and thorough as the others. Unfortunately, some of the great artwork that was shown on the last few pages were not included for tutorials. Minor nitpicks were layout problems. The reader would have to keep turning the page to read what the artist was referring to on the previous page or vice versa. I preferred finished illustrations on one page rather than two pages in a book due to the fold in the middle of the illustration. It destroys it for me, but it's personal preference of course.Overall, it was a somewhat informative book, but wish it was more indepth with the digital painting techniques, including a cd with brushes and videos.

The package got to me on time and just the way it was described! Love this book. a good continuation of the first digital paintings technique book. overall happy with everything. :)

LOVE IT! This is the best book to use for learning now techniques in PS! I have been using the program for.... well a long time.. and even experienced as I am I am learning new things... allot of new things from these books. They are the most informative and easy to learn from then some of these other books I have bought in the past. I have recommended these to many of my friends and co-workers and they all seem to love it as well!

I really liked this book. Just skimming through it inspires you and the references and the guidance provided is nice if you know your stuff. I wouldn't recommend this book to a novice but its an excellent source for inspiration for a driven individual! Ought to have some basic understanding for learning through this book.

I love almost everything about this book, from the logical layout to the interesting and extensive information to the beautiful colors. I was pretty shocked though to find that this is not a full size book for the price I paid. It's sized like a large pocket size book, I have birding books and travel guides about the same size. For the very high list price I was expecting something about twice as big. Due to the small format the writing is tiny and the flags with smaller details are very hard to fully appreciate. But there is nothing I wanted from a flag book that this book does not have other than a larger format. Mostly recommend.

TONS of info about flags in general and the symbolism on each flag. Also some regional lesser known flags for larger countries included. Sorted by continent and with maps so you can identify and cross reference. Also categorized by type. A pretty solid resource for info on flags, may need to be updated. Very nice colorful images. I've learned just about ALL the world's nations flags with this book and a learning place mat.

IN COMPARISON WITH THE 2006 EDITION THAT I HAVE TOO.THIS EDITION IS UPDATED I HAVE OTHER SOURCES THAT ONLY SHOWS THE INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES BUT THIS PRODUCT ARE DIFFERENT IT HAS ALL THE FLAGS OF THE WORLD...

This is the second book by Sandra Steingraber that I purchased after viewing online the Bill Moyers interview of the author on the eve of her incarceration for "trespass" in April, 2013 as part of a group of protestors obstructing fracking operations near her home in upstate New York. The preceding work, "Living Downstream" received my very strong approval; indeed, I titled my review of that work with the statement: "Bears powerful witness to the importance of combatting profit-mongering environmental destruction." The fact is that everything I said about Steingraber's first book can be raised by at least a power of ten to describe this one.Elijah is Sandra's second child, who, as explained in the foreword, is named for Elijah Lovejoy, one of the early martyrs of the Abolition Movement. He was gunned down in 1837 at the age of 35 because of his refusal to stop agitating for the end of slavery. This didn't happen in the Deep South, though, but in Illinois, Steingraber's home state. As she says, as a school child she learned the story of Elijah's heroic dedication, and the fact that his martyrdom inspired others, including his dear friend Edward Beecher, president of Illinois College, and Beecher's sister Harriet (author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin") to take up the abolitionist cause. The message is clear. The work of dedicated authors who are deeply moved by the huge social evils and dangers they perceive can, if well-written, inspire vitally needed changes that may save a nation or even the whole planet.And Sandra Steingraber's books are incredibly well-written. As with her previous work, the scientific discussion is tightly researched and of flawless accuracy; she lives up to her scientific credentials as a PhD Biologist impeccably. However, she also writes as a mother in terms that any parent can easily relate to; her story of the rabid bat found in her child's bedroom, or her own catastrophe while trying to thaw winter-frozen plumbing are both hilarious and heart-stopping. Her chapter titles, for instance "Chapter Five: The Kitchen Floor (and National Security)" are absolutely tantalizing; and indeed, in each of the areas she addresses, she ties together the very mundane and the utterly terrifying in a completely coherent yet intricate narrative.This book could be grim to the point of being unbearable in the hands of a less skilled author or less devoted parent. Yet true to the message in the very beginning about the impact of Elijah Lovejoy's efforts despite his massacre, she insists that there IS a way out, and that if we have the commitment and will, we can find it. In her last chapter, "Bicycles on Main Street (and High-Volume Slickwater Hydraulic Fracturing)" - obviously her newest and most focused activism cause - she quotes two people, following a community meeting to discuss the issue of fracking. One, an older gentleman from a community that had successfully turned away the trucks scheduled to dump fracking waste water into an old well in their town, declared "We have to be ready to lie down in front of the trucks."The other quote is from her son Elijah: "We shouldn't wreck this place down, right, Mom?"And there it is in a nutshell. As many people have begun to realize, we're on the knife-edge now. We may very well wreck our planet down beyond any hope of repair, and it may happen before my great grandchildren (I have only one at the moment) are grown. But if there is any hope of a turnaround similar to that which led to the abolition of slavery, it will be because there are those like Sandra Steingraber who are willing to tell it like it is, well supported by scientific evidence but also on fire with the passion of parents not willing to trade their children's future for temporary financial gain. As she asserted elsewhere in her discussion, we are indeed faced with a choice; will we be so addicted to the perceived benefits of our profligate usage of fossil fuels that, like the people who lived on the outskirts of Hitler's concentration camps, we don't notice the gathering clouds of noxious smoke that will eventually obliterate everything? Or will we indeed do what we can, turning the science that has given us these horrendous problems back towards truly human solutions? And indeed, she obviously is walking the walk herself!

Interesting book, very thought provoking, but I found it quite depressing. It's true she's writing from a standpoint that whether or not we poison our children shouldn't be a parent's decision (ie. organic vs non-organic) but rather that real change needs to come on a much larger (state and federal) scale. The author gives some great pro-active tips, like growing a garden, composting, line drying clothes, etc.

Sandra Steingraber is a voice of reason with strong fact-based arguments for strengthening our environmental protections to more adequately protect children's health. Using her own experiences as a parent she brings to life the dilemmas parents face trying to protect children from harms that are dispersed by industrial practices and chemical-intensive farming. A PhD scientist, she sources her material flawlessly, giving potent ammunition to those committed to help make our children's lives safer. She shows us that the potent hazards to children of lead paint were well known by 1936, 40 years prior to the US ban on lead paint was enacted in 1976. But more than just a historical work showing the alarming rise in pre-natal and early childhood exposures to a range of carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and asthma inducing substances; she shows us some parenting methods and grassroots activism to lead us towards a more healthy world for all children. This book is an inspiring call-to-arms which should rightfully be feared by chemical industry executives and Halliburton frackers looking to tear up the Marcellus Shale from New York to Ohio. As a parent of two young children I share Dr Steingrabers assessment that protecting my children is primary. I will be giving copies of this book to my elected representatives in the hope that it doesn't take another 40 years to implement policy that is clearly needed to protect children. Well worth reading and sharing with friends. This would be a good choice for book groups and for every school and community library.

She is an elegant, intelligent and hopeful author. I read her first book, Having Faith, while pregnant with my oldest. This book felt like the most kindred spirit read that I found during pregnancy. (Thank goodness for good public libraries that bring us to new treasures (thanks Missoula).) I was so happy to find Raising Elijah, another wonderful book. I had the good fortune to hear her speak about the book in Baltimore. The discussion felt like it was a call to action and to community, as well as to the sacred trust to live our own lives with grace, humor and the passionate desire to protect and nurture our children. The author is a great researcher, and an eloquent story teller. I love her stories of her own family life. They inspire, and invite laughter and companionship in the struggles and joys of parenthood.I also really appreciate her call to be engaged in public/ civic life. We don't need another book about what to buy, we need a book about how to live, collectively, to create a sustainable, healthy, healing world for ourselves and our beloved children.You'll love this book.

Very informative and thought provoking. Topics discussed in the book had be asking deeper questions and doing more research. I highly recommend it.

A fact-based read, supported by numerous cited studies. What is in our environment that harms our children. Alternate solutions to the great many harmful products (and manufacturing processes) for the common items Corporate American creates and thrust upon the marketplace. A great education foundation on the alternatives we have regarding caring for our health and environment.

Summer assigned reading for my daughter. She is not excited about working over the summer, but has been reading it and doing the course work.
