This is the third and last volume of Farley Mowat's TOP OF THE WORLD TRILOGY dealing with exploration in the extreme north. Like the others, it is primarily a reproduction of the source narratives with Mowat's own comments, editing and observations thrown in.The first two books made for interesting and engrossing reading. This one is interesting but the writing style is way too dry to be called engrossing.As the title suggests, this volume is dedicated to the exploration of the North American tundra. There are tails of depravation and heroism but, for me, they do not compare to the search for the pole or the northwest passage.This books has its place but is not my favorite.

Outstanding read about trips into the unknown which was the beginnig of the end for the prople of the deer,

The final volume in the "Top of the World" series, "Tundra" is a land-based, rather than sea- and ice-based version of the earlier books. Canadian author Farley Mowat completes a marvellous history of the Arctic by looking at some of the first recorded overland journeys into Canada's far north. This is country that Mowat came to know well. After the war he spent several seasons in the Arctic travelling the Barren lands with members of a branch of the Inuits, the Ihalmiuts, soon afterwards to be completely wiped out, mainly by contact with Europeans. Mowat tells the story of their demise in "People of the Deer" and a companion volume, "The Desperate People." "Tundra," on the other hand, is not Mowat's story, but is taken from primary sources, mainly diaries of those who did the travelling, and is a vivid and intense recounting of the up-river journeying of some of history's most adventurous travellers. Farley Mowat has done a great job of making this material accessible. If you have any interest in the Arctic, or Canadian history, or to some extent, the native peoples of Canada (Mowat has been criticised, probably unfairly, for his treatment of native people in his books), or if you just want a good plain adventure story, I highly recommend the three books in this series.

I love that we got to go back to the couple that started it all, Snow and Christopher.There's kidnapping, threats, murder, violence and more bad guys but above everything else Snow and Christopher would do everything in their power to make sure the people they love are safe. And Snow along with Quill are still my favourite.I'm even more intrigued by Poe after this book and hope that he and Snow will get back to the friendship they had, I can't wait to get to know Ginger, Jones and Lee better.And I really, really hope that we get to see Snow handing out little Bucks to the men in their circle.

Snow Storm has a bit of everything, suspense, romance, a few laughs, a few tears. Snow is a character was heart, sass, and smarts. He may be pretty, but don't mess with a man who never forgets. It was great to see Snow take the reigns and take down the bad guys. This is my favorite book by Davidson King since Snow Falling, and I highly recommend the whole series. I'm anxiously awaiting the next two books.

These stories keep.getting better and better. This is a story.of.love, survival, and triumph. There is never a dull moment and once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next Haven Hart story.

This book exceeded my expectations! It was fast-paced, suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to put it down. I loved revisiting Chris, Snow and Simon. It's been five years since Snow and Christopher met. Their life is perfect - they are passionately in love, have loyal friends and Simon is growing into an amazing young man. But as with everything in life - one blink and it can be gone forever. Chris' past comes to ruin everything they hold dear.Snow and all the guys loyal to the Manos family are trying to figure out who is the threat and how to eliminate it with extreme prejudice. Thus starts the race against time. Through it all Snow doesn't spare either resources or favors to get to the truth. The emotions are high, friendships hang in balance but it all pales against the need to find Chris and Simon unharmed, and the depths Snow will go to do it are unlimited.Secrets long buried come to light. All is not as it seems, and the life as they know it might not have been. But the culprit never knew what they were up against. Snow and Black bring Chris home, and Chris has to make hard decisions. We finally see that side of him that was kept hidden before. The side that allowed him to rise and be the man he is now. But Snow is extraordinary - he loves all of Chris no matter what.I loved the introduction of other assassins from Black's organization, who I think will be the subject of the next book. I loved the guessing game, how Snow worked out the puzzles and how he daringly went into danger to save his husband. Snow and Chris together were just so beautiful! I loved both the dangerous and the quiet sweet moments they had. I liked Simon and a little tidbits we got about his personality and awareness about himself. I bet there will be more trouble coming their way but for now the family is back and safe, Chris and Snow are again as close as can be, and life can't be sweeter. Awesome read that I highly recommend! Well done, Ms King!

Christopher is back with the whole gang and has a story to tell...This is the 5th book in the havens hart series and is now my favorite so far. To say I loved this story would be an understatement.When Snow saved Simon's life he didn't realize how his life would change. Snow gained a husband and a family who he would do anything for. In this story we get to see the lengths Snow will have to go through save them. He has to call in all his favors and use his gift to save them.Christopher and Simon are taken by a vengeful madman and it is up to Snow to bring them home. Everyone will learn what happens when you underestimate him. Snow will do anything to bring them back where they belong, save and sound.Snow has to use all his smarts to solve this and isn't afraid to use all the power of the Manos family.Once the action gets started you will be on the edge of your seat hoping it all works out. Everyone jump in to help and you will love the way they all pull together as a family to save of their own.I loved the way everyone pulled together to bring everyone home safe and sound. Chris and Snow's relationship isn't normal for everyone but it works for them. They love each other totally with all their flaws and it makes this a joy to read.The story has action and mystery that will keep you reading. I loved it and I think the whole series is worth the read.I want Poe's story , so i am hoping Davidson will give it to me the sooner the better. I know that will be a great addition to this series as well. Maybe if we say pretty please. Reviewed for Alpha Book Club.

Snow’s love for his husband Christopher and his nephew Simon who for all intent purpose is his son, is deep and unmovable. When Christopher and Si are kidnapped, you see a side of Snow that shows he will stop at nothing to get his family back. I enjoyed how their enemies underestimated Snow and by doing this Snow showed the world how truly strong and smart he really is.Snow will move heaven and earth to get his family back so he calls in all of our favorite players. SS is a fast-paced chess game of wit, sprinkled with tons of sass, humor and intrigue. Snow’s interactions with his neighbor Mrs. Markle will keep you laughing way after you finish the book. One thing I will say is Poe’s character only gets more fascinating, and I can’t wait to read his story.5 stars for Snow Falling, this is book 5 and not a stand alone so please go back and read the prior books, you will love them.

Cheap and very easy to read and understand. Presented in a way that almost anyone could figure this out and before you know it you will be able to move on to any song you wish. It teaches you how to read the sheet music so after completing this book you can go online and find plenty of sheet music for your harmonica. Great for beginners or even those looking to refresh and relearn.

A little difficult to understand the first time as I read through. Basically lesson one is learning to read music, not what I was expecting. There is tablature to get you through. It'll be some time before I can fully understand music notes, not as simple as one would think after reading 5 pages. It could be months or years. Still, a relatively easy lesson but the big down side it YOU'LL NEED A CD PLAYER! In the days where MP3 dominates, the only CD player I have left is in my truck.

Beginning musicians need lots of books & videos to shorten the learning curve & practice time for any instrument - This book is a winner for the harmonica - well worth adding to your collection - you'll be playing a simple song after an hour of practicing from this book. Use the CD to get a feel of the rhythm and learn the basics. A few sips (not too much!) of wine (or any beverage) to relax a bit and keep your lips moist and you will be surprised at the music you can make in such a short time with this book. If you have grandchildren (I have two) they make a great audience for a short time. The older we are, the longer it takes to learn music, this book helps to get you playing faster.

Comprehensive first steps for the most basic of beginners. Very meticulous and slow paced.For me, I wanted to quit after a week or two because I found the pace to excruciatingly slow. However, I have been playing guitar for nearly 50 years and so the fundamentals were not very useful but are hard to ignore due to the value of the actual blow/draw exercises.So, a mixed bag for me, but a good product for the rank beginner with no music literacy at all.

Too many discrepancies in notation. If someone is playing by ear it's going to get you in the ball park, but if you really want to know which notes you are playing in the chords then you should become aware that the chords are sometimes (not always) inverted. It does make a difference. I went through and marked the inversions and then put the corresponding numbers in.

Perfect first book for learning to play. CD is helpful lessons are easy to follow.

It's easy to read and Learn. My 10 year old daughter has taught herself many of the songs in the book.

Intro is fine, showing placement and explanation of holes, how to read harmonica tabs, etc. Music on CD is very boring and songs too similar, although the arrangements were at a pace that was easy to play along with.

I love the book and it really has made me do leaps and bounds in my harmonica skills.

At first I was going to write "The book is a fast read and I would guess its written for a younger group maybe around 10 or 11 years old but this book surprised me on many levels. I'm much older than 10 or 11 and i really enjoyed it. I thought it was thoughtful and intelligent. My day was better for having read this book. I would recommend it. And I will give away something here, at the end of the book it states that the author donates 5% of the annual book sale proceeds to a foundation to further whale research. VERY COOL. and kudo's to the author for her thoughtfulness and kindness.Why I liked it: I felt this book touched on a lot of different aspects of life and made for some interesting thinking. Some of the things it touched on were friendship, trust and sharing and the environment, and because of that, i'd say it's a book for anyone of any age. I think people often use the word "friend" loosely and even hypocritically and lose touch with what " friend" really means; this book is a good opportunity to reexamine your own friendships and your honesty, or lack of honesty, when you call yourself a friend to someone. Also, I liked that this book differentiates between people who actually appreciate and understand that animals, and all living creatures truly matter and that we are responsible for them, vs those people who use them as entertainment for their vacations or "fun" as we often see people doing ( all the while wearing their "save the ocean t-shirts" ). I actually hadn't seen that pointed out in a book before and it was refreshing to read. It also points out our responsibility to the planet and to all the creatures on it. I appreciated that she recognized this. The book also examines not giving up when things seem impossible and that being true to yourself will get you more in life than just going along. It does all of this in a NON preachy way; but rather just by seeing who the characters are and how they interact. The storyline was interesting and it moved quickly. Its an easy, but enjoyable, read, i would give it to a young person to read OR to an old person to read. There is enough in this book to both entertain you AND make you think if you are willing to open your mind and be that person. Sadly, the people that probably really should read this book, probably won't.

This is a beautiful story about one woman's deep connection to the whales (and to one whale in particular), and how that connection grows into a life-long passion and dedication to protecting them. There are many things to love about this story, from its setting on Maui (my favorite place on the planet!), to the beautifully described encounters the protagonist has with Henri and other whales throughout her life, to the many demonstrations of connecting to and trusting in one's own inner light and knowing, to the powerful idea that one person CAN make a huge difference in the world. An enjoyable read with a deeper message for all who would make this world a better place.

Since I've never been to the Islands I was so pleased that this author made it possible to enjoy a visit to Maui ! Through Lori's expert story telling I learned a great deal about Hawaiian tradition. I learned to love a whale named Henri and a girl's love of her island community! The book had a wonderful serene feeling throughout. It was a book that I absolutely fell in love with. Hard for me to believed that this is a first time author. I'm looking forward to your next book Lori Severson!

Highly recommend this book, especially for children at this reading level. Great read for anyone. Great job, Lori. You are truly an author with a huge heart.

And while Hedges doesn’t offer a date, he maintains we are in the final throes of implosion—and it won’t be pretty.The book is thoroughly researched and the author knows his history. And despite some of the reviews it is not so much a political treatise as it is an exploration of the American underbelly—drugs, suicide, sadism, hate, gambling, etc. And it’s pretty dark; although he supports the picture he paints with ample statistics and first person accounts.There is politics, but the politics provides the context for the decay. And it’s not as one-dimensional as other reviewers seemed to perceive. Yes, he is no fan of Trump or the Republican leadership. But he is no fan of the Democratic shift to identity politics, or antifa, either.One reviewer thought he was undermining Christianity but I didn’t get that. He does not support “prosperity gospel” theology, but I didn’t see any attempt to undermine fundamental religious doctrine. He is, after all, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and an ordained Presbyterian minister.He puts the bulk of the blame for the current state of decay, in fact, where few other writers do—squarely on the back of capitalist America and the super-companies who now dominate nearly every industry. The social and political division we are now witnessing, in other words, has been orchestrated by the capital class; the class of investors, banks, and hedge fund managers who don’t create value so much as they transfer it to themselves from others with less power. And I think he’s spot on right.We have seen a complete merger of corporate and political America. Politicians on both sides of the aisle serve at the pleasure of the capitalist elite because they need their money to stay in power. Corporations enjoy all the rights of citizenship save voting, but who needs to actually cast a ballot when you can buy the election.And what the corpocracy, as I call it, is doing with all that power is continuing to reshuffle the deck of economic opportunity to insure that wealth and income continue to polarize. It’s a process they undertake in the name of tax cuts for the middle class (which aren’t), deregulation (which hurts society as a whole), and the outright transfer of wealth and property (including millions of acres of taxpayer-owned land) from taxpayers to shareholders (the 1%).I know because I was part of it. As a former CEO and member of four corporate boards I had a front row seat from the 1970s on. The simplest analogy is that the gamblers rose up and took control of the casinos and the government had their backs in a kind of quid pro quo, all having to do with money.They made it stick because they turned corporate management into the ultimate capitalists. The people who used to manage companies and employees are now laser focused on managing the companies’ stock price and enhancing their own wealth. Corporate executives, in a word, became capitalists, not businessmen and women, giving the foxes unfettered control of the hen house.They got to that position through a combination of greed—both corporate management’s and that of shareholder activists—but were enabled and empowered by Washington. Beginning in the 1970s the Justice Department antitrust division, the Labor Department, the EPA, and other institutions assigned the responsibility to avoid the concentration of power that Adam Smith warned us about, and to protect labor and the environment, were all gutted and stripped of power.They blamed it on globalism, but that was the result, not the cause. Gone are the days of any corporate sense of responsibility to the employees, the collective good, or the communities in which they operate and whose many services they enjoy. It is the corporate and financial elite, and they are now one and the same, who have defined the “me” world in which we now live.And the process continues: “The ruling corporate kleptocrats are political arsonists. They are carting cans of gasoline into government agencies, the courts, the White House, and Congress to burn down any structure or program that promotes the common good.” And he’s right. And Trump is carrying those cans.Ironically, Trump’s base, who have been most marginalized by the corpocracy, are the ones who put him there to continue the gutting. But Hedges has an explanation for that. “In short, when you are marginalized and rejected by society, life often has little meaning. There arises a yearning among the disempowered to become as omnipotent as the gods. The impossibility of omnipotence leads…to its dark alternative—destroying like the gods.” (Reference to Ernest Becker’s The Denial of Death.)The economic history and understanding of economic theory here is rich and detailed. Capitalism, as Marx and others pointed out, creates great wealth in the beginning but is doomed to failure due to its inability to continue to find sources of growth and to manage inequities in wealth creation. And you don’t have to be a socialist to see that this is true. Capitalism must be managed. And our government is currently making no attempt to do so. It is, in fact, dynamiting the institutions responsible for doing so.All told, this is a very good book. If you don’t like reading about underbellies (I found the chapter devoted to sadism personally unsettling, being the father of two daughters.) you will find some of it pretty dark. Having said that, however, the writing is very good and Hedges never wallows in the darkness. He’s clearly not selling the underbelly; he’s trying to give it definition.I did think that some of the chapters might have been broken down into different sub-chapters and there is a lack of continuity in some places. All told, however, I do recommend the book. There is no denying the fundamental thesis.The problem is, however, we’re all blaming it on the proverbial ‘other guy.’ Perhaps this book will help us to understand the real culprit—the capitalist collective. “The merging of the self with the capitalist collective has robbed us of our agency, creativity, capacity for self-reflection, and moral autonomy.” True, indeed.

The inimitable Hedges is not only a saint with a penetrating intelligence, but also a man of superior eloquence with the power to pull you into his descriptions of the collapse of western civilization. Hedges says that the new American Capitalism no longer produces products — rather America produces escapist fantasies. I found this paragraph [page 233] particularly relevant. The act of being dedicated to the ‘greater good’ has in itself become dangerous.Chris Hedges: “We do not become autonomous and free human beings by building pathetic, tiny monuments to ourselves. It is through self-sacrifice and humility that we affirm the sanctity of others and the sanctity of ourselves. Those who fight against cultural malice … have discovered that life is measured by infinitesimal and often unacknowledged acts of solidarity and kindness. These acts of kindness … spin outward to connect our atomized and alienated souls to others. The good … draws to it the good. This belief — held although we may never see empirical proof — is profoundly transformative. But know this: when these acts are carried out on behalf of the oppressed and the demonized, when compassion defines the core of our lives, when we understand that justice is a manifestation of love, we are marginalized and condemned by our sociopathic elites.”

If you've never read Hedges - get it now. If you've read him before - there's nothing new here.Chris Hedges is a writer who has a knack for seeing the big picture and connecting the dots. A chronic pessimist in the best sense, a bitter prophet warning us of the last days of the decaying empire, his page-turning prose carving through the morass of today's mania and derangement. For that, he's in the company somewhere between Cornel West and Morris Berman (the later, whose book Why America Failed, is better than this. If you're familiar with Hedges, but not Morris Berman, go find Berman instead).I give this three stars only because there isn't much new here if you're familiar with his material. I felt this book to be an update of Empire of Illusion, punched up by old articles from his weekly column at Truthdig. Aside from the introductory chapter, he revisits themes of sadism, the decline of literacy, of labor, of democratic institutions, and so on, which are too familiar. The pages and pages detailing the BDSM craze I felt were excessive in their prurient voyeurism which journalistic approaches can fall into. Not saying he's wrong at all, but this tone could put off some readers, erring on excessive preacherly seminarian virtue signaling as he points out the sins of the world and shouts - "Look! Look at what we've done!"

Heartbreaking to read but so true. In our “truth is not truth” era Mr. Hedges once again writes the sad and shocking obituary for American Democracy and sounds the prophetic alarm to those revelers while Rome burns. All empires come and go but I never thought I’d be a witness to one. Something sick and traitorous has infected the soul of America and I fear it’s going to be some demented combination of the worst elements in 1984 and Brave Bew World. The most important work currently published but will anyone listen? Will anything change?

The author is honest and intelligent.When you take a detailed look at reality it can seem harsh.Don't shoot the messenger who has brought bad news. We need to know the truth.Read, listen, learn. Engage in positive actions to improve the situation.Chris has given us a wake-up call.

I have a lot of MS project books and I have to say this has become my "go-to" book! This is also true for my co-workers, as they are using it too. We just moved from CA Clarity to MS Project 2013/PWA and there is a lot to learn. Some is very intuitive, where other things are not. Thankfully this book breaks it down and makes it so much easier to set your project schedules up for success!

Important for the readers, it's not a dedicated Project book, it's more tan that.The book contains a lots of "key tips" for doing a proper handling of a dynamic Schedule.Excellent.

This is a splendid little book. Paddy Cummins clearly took up writing in his golden years but is making up for time as this is his 10th book. And unlike so many self-published books there are very few errors.He obviously loves Malta and spends time there each winter. Travelling alone, he always books into the same hotel, which is one of those which cater for pensioners by offering cheap winter rates. Many of these people escaping winter will stay for a whole 3 months.Paddy is gregarious but not to a fault. He prefers to lurk in the dining rooms and bars, sitting quietly at the back and noting the eccentricities and foible of his fellow customers. He also gets out and about, walking, riding on the bus, even driving a little.We end up with a lovely and affectionate picture of Malta as it is now, a little bit of its history in the time of the Turkish seige of the Knights of St John and during the battering it took during World War II, being bombed ceaselessly from Italy, which is so near. We learn quite a bit about Paddy's own history, his attitudes to life and other people, and quite a bit about the "fictional" characters who inhabit the hotel, Malta, and the pages of the book.The overall result is a delight. I have been to Malta before. I am more familiar with Rhodes and am aware that when the Turks drove the Knights from Rhodes they moved to Malta and more or less rebuilt Rhodes Old Town as Valetta. I have an ambition to do a holiday which involves spending a week in Rhodes, immediately followed by a week in Malta.But after reading Paddy's book, I want to go to Malta now.

Whilst the author may be well know and lauded for his travel writing, this book should not be counted amongst his better efforts. Taking the reader along on a stroll through the streets, shops and attractions of Malta may be engaging, but for some reason the writing of it comes across as somewhat lackluster and simply does not make on wish to turn the page.......

This friendly and chatty travel tale is for senior persons or those with interest in historical sights, enjoyable food and quiet contemplation. Like many of the visitors to Malta, in fact.The author has travelled to Malta for several winters by the time of writing, and stays in the same hotel, preferably with a sea view rather than the drying laundry in the courtyard. He gives some practical tips just by relating his journey. We learn that there is only one real Irish pub - the rest are run by Maltese with fake Irish names. We find that the most obese nation in Europe is Britain, followed by Malta. This may have something to do with the number of large British persons he meets holidaying there, enjoying their food. By contrast he minds his weight and regularly walks, including a pre-breakfast scenic hike each day.The chapters are unbalanced in that the author spends a lengthy number of pages describing what seems to be a standard hotel breakfast, then speeds up as he recounts the recent improvements with 85% EU funding such as revamped harbour, castle walks and buses. We get a good look around Valetta, the castle, artwork, history. Then he crams in a great number of names of sites to the last chapter, perhaps realising that he was running out of time. The last chapter also visits Gozo the nearby island.While the author seems like a personable, non-intrusive man, we enjoy some of his family recollections and chuckle at his viewpoint of the tourists around him. He has the greatest respect for native Maltese and enjoys the island atmosphere. He mentions how he started writing by taking a creative writing class, and now has several books under his belt.The majority of readers will accept the casual, spoken style of prose, but I do wish the tutor had taught the author correct English and when to use it. "The woman that taught me creative writing" is not an object, so this should read "the woman who taught me". The presentation of the book is blog style - paragraphs have no indentation and there is a blank line between all paragraphs. This no doubt has come straight from the author's blog but it feels odd for book readers and book formatting would be appreciated.Certainly if the reader is planning a trip to Malta and wants to check out issues first, this book would be a help. While more activities are mentioned, like the availability of diving and sailing, you will need to bring your own guidebooks on those and on birdwatching.

A bit of memoir, a bit of travelogue, a bit of cheeky Irish humor. I really enjoyed reading about Paddy Cummin's love affair with this little slice of paradise. I had no idea Malta had so much to offer, and as if my travel "bucket list" wasn't long enough already, now I have another destination to add!

Mr Cummins paints a clear picture of the wonderful island of Malta and its people.My grandparents immigrated from Malta back in 1930. I've been to Malta once before and loved that I was able to bring my wife and daughter to show it off.I enjoyed reading the book while visiting the island just this week. We even meet the cat lady during dinner this evening as she was making the rounds.Cheers
