David Gibson (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is minister of Trinity Church in Aberdeen, Scotland. Previously he served as a staff worker for the Religious and Theological Studies Fellowship (part of UCCF) and as an assistant minister at High Church, Hilton, Aberdeen. Gibson is also a widely published author of articles and books such as Rich: The Reality of Encountering Jesus and Reading the Decree: Exegesis, Election and Christology in Calvin and Barth. Jonathan Gibson (PhD, Cambridge University) is associate minister at Cambridge Presbyterian Church and assistant professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary. He is the author of historical and biblical articles in Themelios and Journal of Biblical Literature and regularly speaks at conferences in Australia and South Africa. Jonathan and his wife, Jackie, have two children J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Packer served as general editor for the English Standard Version Bible and as theological editor for the ESV Study Bible. Sinclair B. The doctrine of Limited Atonement is truly one of the most overwhelming declarations of God's love for His people and sadly one of the most avoided and misunderstood declarations of The Bible. I cannot begin to express the detail and precision with which this teaching has been expressed and defined in this book. I have not often been challenged and driven to know what I know and why I know it as I have by reading this work. It took me nearly a year to truly dig into and digest From Heaven He Came and Sought Her, but I have grown richly in Christ from plowing through this masterpiece. I pray that many will find and read this insightful and delightful work. I want to personally thank the contributing author's for this timeless treasure, and will without hesitation place in on the top shelf of my libraryRomans 11:36
Whenever the topic of Calvinism comes up in my daily life, the most often stumbled upon point is the point of definite atonement. The doctrine of definite atonement is the truth that Christ, before the foundation of the world, chose to die for the elect and bare the wrath for only them.This is the doctrine that is always challenged, and it is a very good challenge! What does scripture have to say? Theologians from John Piper to Sinclair Ferguson to Carl Trueman to Michael Haykin help make this one of the best books I have ever read. This volume looks at the doctrine of definite atonement by looking at the four major ways anyone should ever look at a doctrine; by looking at how it came to be through Church History, where it is in the bible, how it rounded out as a doctrine and how does it apply to practical ministry today. This is no small task either. With over 700 pages and 23 chapters, this book is quite the doozy, but it is well worth its weight in gold.The best part of this book has to be the historical sections on looking at the doctrine of the atonement from the church’s history. Haykin and Trueman’s chapters alone are well worth the price, for getting the insights from two of the best church historians in today’s church is just not something you will get in Seminary.The second best part of the book has to be the pastoral section. It is easy to just theoretically talk about the abstract concepts of different doctrines and such, but to apply it to the battlefield of pastoral ministry when you desperately need to know that Christ did not fail in his mission is unlike anything other to bring comfort to your soul. When you have two top-notch Pastor/Theologians like Piper and Ferguson, who have been in the trenches of pastoral ministry for decades, come and present how this doctrine applies to the ministry and brings comfort to the Pastor’s soul, it can’t get any better than that!I highly recommend this book for anyone who is exploring Calvinism or definite atonement and wants to finally come to a conclusion to where they stand when it comes to one of the most crucial doctrines of Reformed Theology.(I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.)

I believe in unlimited Atonement and thought this book was a well put together case for Limited Atonement. I love the history that is given as well as the graceful delivery of the position. I did not find any of the arguments to be persuasive, but I do believe that they helped me weed poor arguments out of my own understanding. Overall I would recommend this book to all sides of the debate. cheers!
