This was a very entertaining book for those who enjoyed The Paris Architect or A Perfumer's Secret. It alternates stories from the perspective of Grace Monroe, young upper class London wife of the 1950's and a poor young orphan Eva D'Orsey, originally from France, whose story plays out beginning in the 1920's. The fates of these two are connected when Grace discovers she has been named the sole heir of Eva, recently deceased. The fact that Grace has never heard of Eva provides an intriguing mystery. The switching of settings, historical periods and society perspectives makes for a very entertaining story, especially for those fascinated as I am by tales of Europe in the years leading up to the Second World War. Lyrical descriptions of perfumes and the process of creating them add almost a spiritual element to the novel. It certainly made me think about the world of fragrance in a whole new light.

I enjoyed the story. I liked the characters and the way the tale is unraveled. The one thing that I did not like were the grammatical errors that any editor should have caught. Simple things like using the wrong suffix on the right word or the wrong gender pronoun. I realize it has little bearing on the story itself, but they're glaring to me and most annoying.

I must admit that this title did not strike me as very interesting, yet it was odd enough to make me curious. I ended up completing the book in one day, and enjoyed it very much. Although the story is predictable In some ways it is a story well told.The characters Drew me in. I enjoyed the information, or maybe the Word is philosophy, about the complex power In our Unique sense of Smell. It is true that very core Memories are often linked to a scent, Transfering us back to that moment...I did thoroughly Enjoy the 'final pieces' of the puzzle, leaving (almost) no questions unanswered. ...I read For pleasure, and also For enlightenment....this Book came through on both counts.

This storyline had a little bit of promise but the pages were filled with errors of all types! Grammatical errors, spelling errors, you name it - sometimes several on a page. Very distracting and made me feel that I had not purchased a quality product at all. How do these books get published in this condition?

I do not like rape books. This is set during a time and location that is not glamorous. Nazi times in France. How people of title and influence used this young maids gifts. The story ends with why Grace was left with wealth and how her birth mother protected her wealth for the child she was not able to have because she was oy 15. Since Grace was married it would have been nice to see her stand up to her cheating husband but that does not happen the story just ends with her having choices but a very Controlling cheater is now wanting her to be apart of his life againI would be ok if there was a book 2. The entire book was pretty much just answers to the connection of the characters no result as far as what choices Grace makes. So I would not recommend unless the author is planning on a book 2 with Grace and her navigating her situation.

I had high hopes for this after reading the first beautifully written scene and indeed the writing is good throughout. The descriptions of perfume are the best part of the book, which is not great considering a story with such elements should have been moving. I am an emotional person, and I didn't come close to shedding a tear for any of the main characters. In fact, by 80% I was getting irritated by their shallowness. Grace's purchase of an expensive dress does not make a her a transformed woman. In fact, she seems sort of dim when she signs a business deal without reading the terms. That's not admirable. It's just stupid. Eva's act of vengeance against a woman who betrayed her disgusted me. The last ten percent almost made me change my mind and give this four stars. There were some well written scenes with emotion there, but it was really too late for me to connect with these unlikable characters. You learn that Eva does some heroic, perhaps even self-destructive, things to save her friend, but given the outcome, it comes off as pointless. And why mention her disappointment that Andre doesn't sleep with her anymore? He's gay. We know that from the start and so does she. The romance between Grace and the lawyer was completely unbelievable. There was little to lead up to that. The husband was written off in one sentence. And the father of Grace should not have been introduced in the last ten percent of the story. Again, it's just too late for me to care. I feel like the author focused too much on what wasn't important and not enough on developing what could have been a great story. This was really a 3.5 stars for me.

Very compelling story of an English maid who inherits a lovely Paris apartment and sizable estate from a woman she doesn't even know. Set in Post WWII France, find out how the maid is connected to the most famous perfume maker in the world. Follow along as she discovers the true identity of the mystery benefactor and the life she lead during Nazi occupied Paris. Written with the same flavor of the book The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah.

Andragogy, in contrast to pedagogy, is a field that focuses on adult learning and everything that ensues. It is "any intentional and professionally guided activity that aims at a change in adult persons" (Location 1174). It does not merely translate pedagogical principles to an adult context, but it is an attempt to focus on the adult learner and "provide an alternative to the methodology-centered instructional design perspective" (Location 124). This book proposes and argues for six principles of andragogy: the learner's need to know, the self-concept of the learner, the prior experience of the learner, the readiness to learn, the orientation to learning, and the motivation to learn (Location 155). These core principles are set in the context of individual and situational differences, which are subject matter differences, individual learner differences, and situational differences. This is then set in the context of the broader goals and purposes for learning, which are institutional growth, individual growth, and societal growth (Location 164). As a result, this book is separated into three parts: part one focuses on the theory of andragogy, the second part then addresses the context that andragogy takes place, and the last part then elaborates on practice.The six principles of andragogy are a helpful guide for every educator to ensure maximum engagement, proactive learning, and benefit to one's students. Context is key for adult education, so the learner's past and present experiences bring multiple dimensions to their learning experience. Thus, "if education is life, then life is also education" (Location 748). Consequently the teacher assumes the most important role in adult education - he/she is the one who will determine if he/she will step down from the stage, and become a guide on the side, in order to become a co-learner with the students. This is the crucial step that must be taken, in order for adult education to thrive. Since I am constantly training adult leaders to lead groups of 3, 12, or 50 other adults, it is important that I am using andragogical principles, rather than pedagogical. Not only will andragogical principles benefit the learner, but it will also create a healthier context for discipleship.

I am an Instructional Systems Specialist and this book is one of my reference guides along with the Carey, Carey and Dick and Mager books​. The book has clear and coherent information for a curriculum designer who has to develop lessons for training and workforce development programs. I love this book and highly recommend for individuals who develop, design and evaluate educational and professional development programs for adults.

Very informative book on adult learning! I strongly recommend for anyone in Human Resource Development or higher education.

A little background: I am not a college professor or corporate HR director, so to some degree there are things in this book that were lost on me for that reason, HOWEVER...I have worked in the past as an instructor for adult learners (in corporate and other environments), and earned a degree in Journalism, so I do know something about good writing hopefully. I purchased this book to gain insight into the motivations behind adult learners. Why do some go back to college even when their job does not require it? What motivates them? How do they learn compared to teenagers, etc? What techniques are best in a classroom full of adults? And FWIW I have been able to glean some useful bits of information in these respects. But this book could be so much more, if the authors would simplify the writing style. Get out of your own way and tell the story! Let me explain further...My biggest problem with this book is that it reads like a college thesis. I always value and appreciate a well annotated work that references other respected works, however this book goes completely overboard. In some chapters, almost every page is a pulled quotation from another work or book. There are so many references as to be distracting to the reader IMO. The original point being discussed (and its relevance to the person teaching adults), is often lost and you have to go back and read again so you haven't wasted your time.The information itself is sometimes helpful and enlightening, but buried among wordy descriptions, run-on sentences and frankly, verbal pomp. And though I recognize this book is geared towards those in HR development (companies that teach their employees IOW), there are clearly parallel lessons to be learned for anyone teaching adults, regardless of the environment (work, leisure or vocational). This book is simply not approachable enough, though there are some very good nuggets of info to be found and applied to our work. You just have to dig and re-read more than anyone should have to, in order to process that information.

Not sure what to fully think about this book. It's not the greatest or worst...The HR material seems out of place and was probably added to broaden potential buyers.

This book is like a one-stop shopping guide to Adult education. It is so comprehensive that I doubt it leaves out one development in the history of adult education. My only warning is that the opening chapters which basically trace many theories of learning (both adult and traditional) are hard to get through -- it reads more like a research paper that summarizes every major educational theory since the beginning of time. But, if you don't want to know that much, you can simply skip these chapters and get right to the meat of the adult learning theories which are more appropos. For those who need a quick primer on learning theories, you'll love the first few chapters for their abundance of quick summary information. A useful guide to adult education.

The author wrote the pre trilogy to give the backstory to the favorite character of the series. But it feels as if the series was designed for the character of Drizzt. In the final book of the trilogy there is a great deal of excitement, action, and humor. And of course there is a fair amount of tragedy the author enjoys getting his George RR Martin on.

"Sojourn" is the last book in the "Dark Elf Trilogy" and it details Drizzt's journey as he leaves the Underdark and ventures forth on the surface.I thought the plot was a bit clunky in that it felt like the author crammed two major stories into one book. The first story is how Drizzt attempts to befriend some humans and all the things that go into fighting some new creatures, defending his good nature, and learning to survive on the surface. The second story commences when he leaves the initial place where he found sanctuary and attempts to find a place to call home. In a way, it felt a little like Tolkein's final story where the ring is destroyed, but the book continues back to the Shire for a little adventure there.I enjoyed this book and the subtle religious undertones. Drizzt comes to realize that Lolth, the Spider Queen, is not the only deity in the world, and that by following his heart he was following after a deeper calling. It was also comforting to follow Drizzt's journey as he sought out true companions that would accept him for who he was and not just make decisions based on his race.

Sure I was sad to see the crazy magical mining pickaxe, hammer handed dude leave, but I guess there is only so much you can write about someone with no hands. I think.Initially, Drizzt gets himself into some shenanigans by getting framed for slaughtering a bunch of kids. While it was quickly determined he was not the murderer, some jackass kept on trying to kill him because he lost his ear. He lost his ear when a tree fell on him. Shouldn't this guy go buck-wild on the tree instead? I think that would take less effort than tracking him for so long.Drizzt then takes out the real murders, who apparently need to eat people, I guess to gain XP in order to go back to its alternate universe. I related to this on a personal level.Between these events, some female ranger tries to track him down with an obviously metro-sexual dwarf and an elf I couldn't really care about. Their story ends when some rock-monsters started barraging them with boulders. Drizzt of course saved them, but then those characters became non-existant in the continuing plot. Where did they go? Who were they? Should I really care? Probably not.Then Drizzt meets up a crazy dude who is like Dr. Doolittle meets the Terminator. Except he's blind, which if you kinda think about it, makes him even cooler. The story turns into the Karate Kid for a while and Drizzt comes out being even more badass than in previous books.Other cool stuff happens. Conclusion: read it, dammit.

Just when you think you have the book figured out it will surprise you. Just when you think there is a pattern to Drizzt's misery you will be denied! This book is a self expression of belief that a virtue in itself is rewarding. There is a deep sense of right and wrong that every young reader should try and understand. I am 43 years old and am reading the book with my 2 year old sleeping next to me, yes I hope she reads the book as soon as she can. There is something sweet about this book. Something very satisfying; like I said a must read.

As usual a great story from R.A. Salvatore. The third book in the Legend of Drizzt series, it really demonstrates how much of an outcast Drizzt really is on the surface. Whereas the two previous ones, Homeland & Exile delved into drow culture and the air of mystery surrounding their city of Menzoberranzan, Sojourn shows the stark contrast between the world of the drow and that of the surface. Overall an incredible tale!

It has been a long time since I've read a book in less than 3 days, but this was a true page turner for me. In fact, I have read the first 3 novels in the past 10 days or so, and I haven't grown tired yet.I liked this story better than the second in the trilogy, and maybe a bit more than the first in some ways.I highly recommend the trilogy, and if like I you feel a bit apprehensive after finishing the second, grab this novel. It not only finished the trilogy on a strong note, it reinvigorated my interest in moving onto the 4th novel.

Awesome set collection of books. A family member gave them to me when I was younger. I thought they looked nerdy and it took me a few years to give it a go, but I am very glad I did. I read through my old copies so many times they fell apart, which is why I bought this copy. It's nice to have the trilogy in one book, even if it is the size of a cinder block.

I have taken MS Office courses before but this book was very self-explanatory. This book only touches on some main items in the Office programs. There are more difficult things to learn in Excel and Access, that aren't discussed here. However, this would be a good starter book or just a book for brushing up some forgotten skills. I was actually glad it wasn't difficult because I already took those courses!

Topol seems to very much dislike and distrust doctors despite the fact that he is one himself. He also applies several rare genetic medical conditions to demonstrate his rational for patients making their own medical decisions without the aid of the medical profession - his point would have been much stronger had he used examples of more common medical scenarios. Overall I learned some interesting facts about technologic advancements in medicine and genetics. This was an informative read, but the tone and clear anti doctor bias was somewhat distracting.

While a healthy skepticism is warranted in the claims of everything from holy wars to Renaissance to modern science and founding of american republic is attributed directly to the printing press, one cannot easily dismiss the "combinatorial intellectual activity" printing facilitated. Topol argues (successfully) further that the technology already exists to enable this remarkable period of creativity in healthcare. Using relatively recent episodes such as FDA v/s 23andme and Angelina Jolie's aggressive preventive measures, Topol provides a very informative and engaging view of how the healthcare system is clearly at an inflection point.In the second section, Topol focuses primarily on the key enabling technologies that will make his vision of a democratized and personalized healthcare a reality. Moving beyond traditional logging devices, Topol paints a realistic vision of the technologies and the opportunities they are already creating such as from lab-on-a-chip to lab-in-body. Along the way, his insights on the failures of EMR systems (using OpenNotes as a contrast), potential of "pre-womb to tomb" predictive/diagnostic models is well worth the read. In fact, the chapter on the various -omics and their potential role (adapted from his famous paper in Cell) and examples on pre-diabetic and airway diseases in itself is worthy of investing in this book. A reader will also gain significant insights about some trailblazing companies like Theranos, QuantuMDx, etc. The discussion around how 3 of the 5 imaging technologies have already been miniaturized to hand-held devices is a clear indication of the realism embedded in Topol's assertions.In the third section, Topol objectively analyses the import of these changes (cultural and technological) on how healthcare will be delivered and consumed. These discussions go beyond "disintermediation of doctors" and is a must-read for anyone interested in developing new service models. A few years ago, The Innovator's Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care, provided a radically new way to rethink service models - Topol's book does the same from the viewpoint of patient and the role of technology.At times, Topol perhaps extends the patient advocacy too aggressively. For example, on a discussion crucifying Myriad and value of patents, he seem to dismiss the risk taken by private enterprises to generate these insights. While he fully acknowledges that information and knowledge gaps are critical, he uses a few hand-picked examples of how highly motivated individuals were able to be remarkably active with the diagnosis and treatment of their conditions (it is hard to say how generalizable these episodes are). Criticisms on AMA may also not be entirely fair and while there will always be "eminence-based medicine" as Topol characterizes it, there is no doubt that some of it needs to be modulated better with patient-centric approaches.With the clarity of discussion aided by well-chosen examples and analogies bereft of needless cheer-leading, over 50 pages of notes/references, excellent diagrams accompanying some of the key concepts, Topol's book is well-poised to define the next big discussion on healthcare. With the aggressive growth of wearables and smartphones showing no signs of slowing down, wider acknowledgement of patient participation as key for healthcare outcomes, changing delivery models such as ACOs in the US, some of Topol's vision may become reality sooner than even he seem to hope for. Nevertheless, Topol has succeeded in providing a clear thought framework to assess and harness the role of mobile technology in reshaping healthcare ecosystems.

Dr Topol has a vision of the future of healthcare that is probably as good as futurist ever are. Most of the time the future is not what is imagined. That should not stop anyone from trying! He sees the demise of the general hospital as we know it and more DIY medicine with the smartphone as the hub of wonderful new sensors will give ICU monitoring at home. All this would be very good if sick people were still able to always think clearly and follow their best interests. I do think he underplays to role of greed in the health care system, but my crystal ball was cracked in an unforeseen accident. This book is well researched and written.

This book aligns well with my approach to all medical services that each of us experience with the medical system here in the United States.For years I have seen myself as a "customer", not a patient and as a customer I have the same rights and requirements from the medical establish that I have with say a repair shop and repairs to my automobile.I have been over "well, the doctor said so" fairy tail for years now and any doctor that refuses to allow "my" participation in my own health care gets fired.This book lays out much of the truth of how we got in this predicament and speaks to where this is all headed.Fine reading if you have any idea of what really drives the medical establishments in the US.
