So focusing on Moe and Mizuki, the third year couple involved with the track team and finally gracing the cover, was a perfect fit.In truth, I have been “queer-burned” enough times by anime and manga that I am very hesitant to call two girls or two boys a couple, even in a series like Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl which truly is a yuri series. But even I feel thoroughly convinced that Moe and Mizuki are intended to be a couple who are attracted to each other in a romantic/sexual manner.The two of them have been together since before the series even began, and while there have been many close female friendships in this series, this relationship has been portrayed as a bit more intense (which, in fiction, a more intense relationship is usually code for a more “intimate” relationship as well). In fact, the two girls are so joined at the hip that Moe is a little worried about Mizuki’s upcoming performance in the track meet and she proposes that she and Mizuki take a break so that Mizuki can “kick the Moe” and make sure that Mizuki is focused on track for the right reasons, not just to impress her girlfriend.This reason to separate the two before allowing them back together does feel more than a bit contrived but it does allow Mizuki the chance to have some deep introspection and she comes out the experience a more confident character. Mizuki and Moe also seem even more committed to their relationship after all of this, and when the two girls end their part of the volume, walking hand in hand in casual clothing, the reader truly believes that these two will be together for a while to come.Kiss and White Lily volume 4 continues the trend by having an A-part and B-part plot where the B-plot introduces new side characters and even more relationships for the reader to keep track of. Sometimes these new characters are interesting but the new girl introduced here, Kaoru, simply feels boringly familiar with her “it might be unrequited love or it might be unrequited admiration???” plot. Kaoru knew Yurine before high school and Kaoru certainly admired Yurine’s cold intellect and cool manner from a distance, so she has very mixed feelings about seeing Yurine with an actual group of friends now. She spends the volume trying to become closer to Yurine, although it’s unclear if even Kaoru has realized that her feelings to Yurine are closely akin to a crush.But Kaoru is unsure of herself and Yurine is just dense so nothing truly comes out of this B-part and it makes the majority of volume 4 feel like wasted time. There is a truly great scene involving some of Kaoru’s friends, speaking about what friendship means to them and the non-trivial things that they will do for friendship, but that scene only made me wish that Kiss and White Lily had a few completely unromantic, platonic sub-plots where we could see some of these side characters deal with the struggles that come with high school friendships but without the “she likes me, she likes me not” antics.While the bonus Valentine’s Day bonus chapter was an amusing way to end the volume, volume 4 felt too similar to the ones before it for me to be really satisfied as a reader. I don’t object to meeting new characters but with each volume beginning to be very rote in terms of its pacing, conflicts, and resolutions, I would prefer that future volumes take a bit of time to add depth to the current cast before the size of the cast overwhelms Canno’s ability to balance them all.- Helen

The fourth volume of this *yuri* manga series brings developments for two of the couples. These are the "main couple" and the first introduced, and kinda the most prominent or chief of the "beta couples". Though there are some issues along the way, this is, in fact, the best of the series so far.The developments spoken of have to do with the fact that some real progress is made towards someday becoming a couple for Shiromine Ayaka and Kurosawa Yurine (the main couple), and that a major decision and commitment is made on the part of Senoo Mizuki and Nikaido Moe (the chief beta couple). What I mean by that is the fact that in the case of Ayaka and Yurine, it's the first time that Ayaka has shown some affection for Yurine, and has not been merely unwillingly pursued by the other girl. Of course, part of this is a very typical for rom-coms in Japan *tsundere* attitude, as well as a desire to "beat" Yurine at something, but that's still development. Since the beginning these elements have been part of the relationship between the two girls, but previously it was a courtship that Ayaka did not want, while now she seems to be getting more comfortable with the idea.As for the beta couple of Mozuki and Moe, they make a choice that has serious eventual social and other ramifications for them, especially when they go beyond the confines of their school. To have homosexual relationships is something almost expected of girls in Japan as "practice" for "real" ones, though at their age it should have perhaps cooled off some according to societal expectations. Yes, I know that that entire notion just stated about "practice" and "real" is bigoted and homophobic. It's unfortunate, but true, that Japan has at least as much, if not *much* more so, bigotry than the US in regards to homosexuality. To be clear, this is not a moral disagreement or anything in love, but actual bigotry.Anyways, the choice that Mizuki and Moe make are sure to cause them trouble eventually, and I think (given that they phrase it in a relatively mature way) that they know this, but they wish to go through with it anyways. And in the midst of this, we're treated to a nice several page scene of adorable and loving closeness between the two.So while the main couple is steeped in slow progress in a comedic manner, the chief beta couple is maturing, and absolutely adorable for it.The only issues I had with this were three-fold. First off, when did Ayaka get all accepting of Yurine's pursuit of her? I guess the surprise on her birthday that Yurine thoughtfully did could be the point, but we aren't shown that's when it happened. It's several scattered scenes and we have to fill in the gaps to see when she got to be so accepting of the other girl.The second and related problem is that the burgeoning "love story", if that's still the mangaka's desire to pursue, is so agonizingly slow. It's like watching paint dry. Yes, I love the notion of showing sweet love stories of so many couples, Mozuki and Moe as well as others, in the midst of the main duo. But it's hard to cheer for something that's development is largely behind the scenes, has gaps you have to fill in yourself, and when shown is like watching pain dry except for a few "flashes" of development. It's like *Nisekoi* in it's slowness, but without the comedy.And the third critique is a personal one for my tastes. This is that Yurine is so annoyingly, and unrealistically, perfect. Sorry, but without constant exercise, there is no way in hell that she would be beating track stars who train every day. I can accept the natural athletic talent, but we see her as uncaring about anything, presumably including fitness, and she still defeats folks that are fare more fit and practice strategies for running? No way. There is also the fact that while I could ignore the sillier aspects of her characterization, as it is comedy and to keep up her part of the story of the relationship between her and Ayaka, I think the author props her up too much. Yurine is the smartest, best athlete, the wisest, most intuitive (except about herself), and such. She is very much the epitome of a so-called "boring invincible hero". It's hard to cheer when one finds her as annoying as I do. Some less smugness on Yurine's part and more of an ability to lose or what not would make her a better character with her story arc intact but more rounded.Despite the above three criticisms, this was the best of the four volumes released so far, in my opinion. The mangaka's storytelling skills are developing more as she goes along, so the story is more balanced between the couple in the spotlight for that volume, the main couple, and others. As well, the mix of humor and drama was much more balanced, especially for what is a more light-hearted series. And of course, the art was great. It's always been great, but it's even better in this volume. It almost reaches *Citrus* levels of incredible art.This is a fun series with likable (for the most part) characters, who the author keeps consistent (for the most part) in characterization no matter how big or small their roles in each volume and situation, and is just really sweet. I truly enjoy it.Rating: 4/5 Stars.

This series continues to be excellent, especially in this volume as more of the girls express their love and start planning their futures together. I really enjoy the diversity of relationships, loves, and supportive friendships that we get to see between everyone; my only request for the next volume would be more Shiramine x Kurosawa, because their competitiveness with each other is an amazing dynamic, and each little snippet with them just makes me want more.

For those coming into a liturgical tradition from broad evangelicalism this is a much needed roadmap. For those who grew up in a church with a classic liturgy, but never reflected deeply or seriously on the meaning of the service or the reasons behind it, this will be an epiphany. The fourteen chapters are brief, the prose accessible, and the theology sound. Many of the other explanations of the liturgy suffer from archaic language and dated references. Cooper would be my "go to" book to recommend to lay people regarding the liturgy.

This explanation of the Lutheran liturgy has several unique features. First, not only is an element of the liturgy - its rationale and practice - explained, but also its historical origin and its place, or absence, in other theologies (termed "traditions" by the author) laid out. This is typically followed by a case for the orthodox use, respectfully but also, when needed, uncompromisingly made. No doubt the basis for this approach is the fact that the author is of Reformed origin and therefore has a perspective not open to pastors who have always been Lutheran. (The characteristic is very well shown in the author's book [The Great Divide] on the differences between Lutheran and Reformed theology). Secondly, Pastor Cooper is simply a gifted writer. His dissertation flows systemically and without either oversimplification or the assumption that the reader knows high level theological terms.

The theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED) which describes the interaction of light and matter is the most accurate theory in all of science, providing almost unbelievably accurate agreement with experiment. Yet in the middle of the twentieth century the theory was in a deep crisis. Calculations of even the simplest of events in the subatomic world, like the absorption and emission of a photon by an electron, seemed to give nonsensical infinite results that flew in the face of finite values from experiment. These infinities dotted the landscape of physics like ugly tumors, leading some to believe that physics was fundamentally on the wrong track. But hope was at hand. It took a whole post-war breed of brilliant young scientists to invent an ingenious set of tricks collectively called "renormalization" to get rid of these infinities and restore the theory to a complete form. Renormalization not only axed the infinities in QED but became the test that any fundamental theory of physics had to pass before being deemed acceptable. In a stunning set of successes, it was applied to the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces and then to the strong force holding protons and neutrons together. In this book Frank Close tells us how all this happened.Close's book is not only a clear description of renormalization but is also probably the most detailed popular history of post-war particle physics that I have read. Close starts with QED and how its brilliant expositors like Julian Schwinger and Richard Feynman developed renormalization techniques to exorcise its infinities. After this, the major part of the book deals with comprehensively describing one of the great triumphs of modern physics - the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces by Sheldon Glashow, Steven Weinberg and Abdus Salam. This theory had to be again shown to be renormalizable, a momentous feat that was achieved by Dutch physicists Gerard 't Hooft and Martin Veltman. Along the way we are also treated to a fast-paced account of developments leading to the conjecture of the Higgs boson which was originally proposed to explain the difference in masses between the carriers of the electroweak force (the massive Z and W bosons) and the electromagnetic force (the massless photon). And finally Close describes one of the last pieces of the subatomic puzzle, the unraveling of the strong force inside atomic nuclei and the structure of protons and neutrons. These developments capping the understanding of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions paved the way to the creation of the Standard Model of particle physics, the crowning glory of physics that encompasses all known particles and forces except gravity and predicts the Higgs boson.However, the most fascinating aspect of Close's book in my opinion is not the lucid description of these technical details but the way it sheds light on both the nature of discovery and most importantly, the human side of science. As Close himself says, science as it appears to the public seems to consist of a few heroes marching resolutely on a linear trajectory to the truth. But as he marvelously documents, the truth is very different and way more messy and non-linear. Science is as much an unpredictable human drama as an exploration of nature's secrets. In every part of the story we see fallible human beings with all their ambitions, prejudices and flaws. There are lots of cases where scientists give up promising leads because of unfavorable remarks or neglect by others and have their discoveries scooped up later by fellow scientists who then win a Nobel Prize. We also read about the Nobel Laureate P. W. Anderson using insights from a very different field (superconductivity) to make key contributions to the ideas leading to the Higgs. Then there are little-known brilliant scientists like J. C. Ward and Ronald Shaw who have their fundamental ideas ignored because they are relatively unknown junior researchers who are lower in the hierarchy. Nobel Prizes are eagerly sought after, narrowly missed and even lobbied for. Sometimes one can see the almost eerie simultaneous germination of ideas in multiple minds, with some of them blossoming under the right circumstances and others fizzling out because of lack of interest or context. In many such cases, so many people end up contributing to a discovery in so many different ways that assigning credit becomes difficult or impossible. For instance, although Higgs's name is attached to the famous particle, it's clear that at least five others independently had the same ideas. Furthermore, in almost every case that Close documents, there are mutually conflicting accounts by scientists of the exact time, place and source leading to the conception of a key idea. Chance encounters and fortuitous attendances at the right scientific meetings seem to contribute to scientists' thought processes to a disproportionate extent. To his credit Close goes into considerable detail when describing all this and it's truly incredible to realize by reading his account how messy, haphazard and subject to sheer luck the actual process of scientific discovery is. Far from being the sure path to knowledge often depicted by the media, science resembles a zigzag, unpredictable climb over hills and valleys obscured by fog.Yet the beauty of it is that the truth, whatever it is, is surely out there, and an alert and intelligent mind can recognize it through hard-work, curiosity and mathematical prowess. The emphasis on the latter is especially clear in the book, and it's remarkable to realize the almost terrifying power of mathematics that allowed scientists to conjecture the existence of new fundamental particles of nature through sheer thought alone. In many cases it took fifteen or twenty years before these particles were actually found by experiment. The history of particle physics in this sense shows us what the human mind is capable of.As Close tells us in the end, these adventures are far from over. The last part of the book is dedicated to the equally heroic and imaginative experimental efforts devoted to verifying the predictions of the theorists, many of which gathered Nobel Prizes. As the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) spews out massive amounts of data, scientists are waiting with bated breath for the Higgs or its absence. Either way it would be a momentous event and would point to new, hitherto unexplored directions. Overall I would strongly recommend Close's book as one of the best accounts of both the post-war development of particle physics and of the idiosyncratic human side of science that I have read. The story is as epic as any great novel and packed with fascinating characters. Close tells it exceedingly well.

I'm not a scientist so my comments are those of a layman. I found Dr. Close's book to be well-written and worth reading.The book takes as its focus the development of quantum mechanics into quantum electrodynamics, quantum chromodynamics and, what I hadn't encountered before, quantum flavordynamics. The original mathematical models led to numerous infinities which the scientific community that developed these models sought to eliminate at least in part by a process called renormalization. In renormalization, experimental physicists told the theoretical physicists what the answer was and, from what I could tell, the theoretical physicists made the math fit the answer developed by the experimental physicists. Not surprisingly the theoretical physicists found this somewhat unsatisfying. The theoretical physicists struggled to make their theories and the supporting math fit the reality being uncovered by experiment. If you're interested in what these theories propose about physical reality, Dr. Close largely waits until the end of the book to consider some of the nature of our universe as suggested by current scientific understanding.The book really focuses on who received the Nobel prize or who didn't receive the Nobel prize and why this may have occurred. Dr. Close provides insight on the effect of ambition, ego, and personality in the pursuit of the highest prize in science. The book is worth reading for this alone. Feynman,Weinberg, Salam, Gell-Mann,Oppenheimer and others who dominated the development of the Standard Model and quantum mechanics largely from the middle to the end of the twentieth century find their place in the story. Others, less familiar or unfamiliar to me, t'Hooft, Higgs and Bjorken have their substantial contributions explained.

Regardless of what one might like to conclude from the enthusiastic reviews quoted on the dust cover, the layman will learn nothing useful about quantum field theory from this book since that is quite impossible. What one will find is a complete and engagingly told tale of some of the most important and exciting events in the history of physics, leading to what has become the most successful theory of modern times.The saga has all the qualities of a finely crafted suspense novel. Quantum field theory, at first thought to be an elegant and powerful generalisation of quantum mechanics, was soon found to be afflicted with such serious computational inconsistencies that, for a time, it quite fell out of favour. Only the work of the world's finest intellects brought its glorious resurrection.Prof. Close has exhaustively researched the topic, apparently consulting virtually every important paper, conference proceeding and even personal diaries, supported by interviews with every living scientist who took part in the drama. Although I am intimately familiar with the physics, I learned a great deal about its fascinating history and the personal interactions of the participants.What emerges is a very different view of grand science than that which is likely to be held by the novice. Instead of the logical, ordered and seamless progression from one great idea to the next, we find that advancements also involve missteps, misunderstandings and missed opportunities, often tainted with personal prejudice and haunted by the spectre of competition. In his carefully constructed account, Prof. Close communicates both the enormous thrill and crushing disappointments that typify advanced research.I found this book especially entertaining because I was present for the last few acts in the play, know all the participants and did my Ph.D. under one of them (Nobel laureate Abdus Salam). Of course, those not even peripherally involved will still find this book an educational and most enjoyable account of one of the most memorable and dynamic half centuries in the history of physics.

Whats the clue as to why Jesus would have to be nutz to present the Society in 1919 as His choice to His Father Jehovah...Well...If you look at the cover of "The Finished Mystery" ...right under the title....you'll see what I had at first thought were cherub wings. But they are NOT cherub wings....are they?No...but they are a mystical Masonic emblem...the pagan Assyrian Winged Sun Disk.Why, I ask you...would Jesus, fresh on his invisible heavenly throne be drawn to these guys...WITH THAT EMBOSSED ON THE COVER? And show it to Jehovah too as his first kingly decision? Ahhhhh NO! hahaha!This was so much fun and easy to read... and to see ....the main and REAL point...the REAL issue.Truly...Did Jesus go against HIS OWN council at Luke 21:8 (and his and Jehovah's other warnings) and pick this ongoing false teaching (Giza Pyramid) and "Misleading Many" with this false prophesying group ...over all the other groups who were merely trying to spread the actual Jesus commissioned Gospel ???Yep...when you examine the Society evidence up to 1919 and beyond...one could conclude Jesus would be totally retarded to pick them to represent him. The thought is so silly...almost as silly as a Jehovah's Witness trying to keep a straight face explaining the "overlapping Generation " made up new light.This IS a great book! I started to read it again.... it's just so good.

I was a witness for 20 years and in a nutshell this book explains clearly why the organization cannot be the faithful & discreet slave in Matthew 24: 45-47. The organization basis their entire existance on this scripture so when it is blown out of the water you have NOTHING left. The Watchtower is merely a small group of power hungry men trying to convince millions that they are gods chosen, when they are not. Read the book and see how obvious it is using the Watchtowers own publications.

Awesome book on JW history. Good for ex-JW's who want hard facts and great for current JW's who want to learn some hard facts about their religion. The truth about "The Truth" doesn't have to hurt, but it does need to be heard. Look up The BITE model (featured in Combatting Cult Mind Control) and see the real the REAL truth about "The Truth".

This book is an easy read, and would be good for the person who knows nothing of JWs, but needs a good book as a start. The author uses lists and some illustrations to better understand his position. His logic is like a good lawyer, and he makes his case very plainly without going overboard. He utilizes good reference material, including the Watchtower Society's own publications. As he states in his book, "The Watchtower Society's own publications are their worst enemy, and the internet is their worst nightmare."

Insightful information into the mindset of the members and leadership of the Jehovah's Witnesses written by a former insider. Also good strategies for influencing them toward being set free from their bondage to the Watchtower Society. Grammatical errors are outweighed by great content.

We have been JW for 20 years and yet still learn things we did not know prior. Thanks for this analytical, concise and factual book. It helps us to break free from the Watchtower dungeon and found true Freedom! We dissociated in Feb 2014 after abt 1 year of research. Thanks for the effort in writing this book.

This book has an excellent approach. Focus on the (non-existent) legitimacy of The Watchtower organization rather than debating scripture. Nice illustrations, but slightly repetative and slow in the middle. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this to anybody who plans to have any kind of conversations of faith with a Jehovah's Witness.

I received this book as an ARC and I went in kind of blind, not knowing much of anything about the series, but the blurb caught my attention. I was not at all disappointed. In fact I liked this book so much I bought it. I’m going to get the one preceding it and I’m really looking forward to Xander’s story in the next book.This is the story of Damon and Keira. Damon is a mafia boss and Keria is an innocent who is thrown into his life. Keria’s brother worked for Damon, who promised him he would protect her if anything ever happened to him. Keira’s brother is murdered, she is threatened and seeks the aid of Damon. And the story evolves from there.Will Damon protect her? Should she trust this mafia boss with her life? Is she safe with Damon at all? Find out by reading this book. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.

This is the 2nd book in the Mafia romance Series. Convict Me was the 1st book & we meet Damon-briefly -in this book. Damon is Hero's Boss & your first impression of him is that he's a cold hearted Monster & Boss. He owns a Strip Club & runs it with an iron fist. The Heroine of Protect Me is Keira-she goes to Damon for protection when her brother Leo is murdered. Unbeknownst to her, Leo was one of Damon's crew & paid for Keira's education. Leo told Keira to go to Damon if she needed help. Apparently Leo was stealing money from Damon's brother Xander-an even more evil person than Damon. Damon offers Keira his protection & the story takes off from there. We find out that Xander & Damon had a damaged relationship with their Father & they must join together in order to save themselves. Looking forward to the next book in this Series-Keep Me-which is Xander's story.

This book is more then I thought it would be, Damon surprised me every time I turned to a new chapter, Cassandra you were right about me giving him a chance the depths that he went to keeping Kiera safe every thing he did he did for her. First he's a complete A** then he sees what he has, I can't go into more because of spoilers, lets just say this book will have you falling in love with anti heroes. Xanader is something else keeping that one huge secret from Damon could have gotten his little brother killed. Are little h grew a backbone lets see if she needs it in the next book concerning the deadly secret.

Keira finds her brother dead with a note saying will come back for you. She seeks help from a ruthless man who will give her protection for something in return. SEX. This book was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. The characters were great and the storyline was even better! Would definitely recommend to read!

Loved Damon from Convict Me and love him even more after his story. The chemistry between him and Keira could set the sheets on fire!

Protect Me is a vicious whirlwind that left me numb and shocked. I wasn’t prepared for any of this intense and delightful storyline that left me battered and scarred by the end. Don’t get me wrong, this story is truly wonderful, but it will not let you get away without being touched by its danger, mystery, and passion. I held my breath the entire time just waiting for the axe to fall on my head, but instead I found more heart than I ever imagined. You never know what kindness and compassion can bring forth in another person until you give it a chance. They can transform even the blackest of hearts to something indescribable.Keira’s watches helplessly as her warm and caring world falls apart and morphs into something cold and foreign. All she has is rely on is her brother’s word that she will be taken care of. Carefully, she takes her first steps into a new world where mercy is unheard of and justice comes at the hands of those who hold the most power. She walks in wearing her heart on her sleeve and fear in her eyes. Damon is the king of his domain, and nothing is off limits to him. When Keira stumbles into his office and his life, he knows she will upend more than just his schedule. Her very presence resets his thinking and jump starts his heart. Will fear make Damon violate the promise he made to her brother and cast her to the feel of the Devil himself, or will he discover that fear only shadows the promise of something so sweet and precious that it will force him to claim it despite how unworthy he is of it all?I was absolutely lost watching Keira and Damon move around the other and accommodate the reconfiguration of their world. They didn’t know how to deal with the other making such a huge impact on their otherwise well-defined life. Above all, they knew they couldn’t walk away because their heart wouldn’t let them. I love how they slowly but surely gave into their heart’s desire while keeping the other safe and protected. The heat and passion was off the charts, and I love how protective they were of each other. It made my heart soar and sing for joy!JL Beck is a fabulous author who knows how to touch my heart deeply with her stories while I sweat through her marvelous heat! Cassandra Hallman is a perfect complement to Beck and her extraordinary masterpieces. These authors ripped my heart from my chest and barred every part of my soul to the dark while allowing a small piece of hope to take root and transformed this hardened world to unspoken revelations. This is a fantastic series that should not be missed! Picked up the first book right now.

In the previous book of this series (Convict Me), we met Damon, now we get to know his story (although you probably don't need to have read the previous book). Keira came home to find her brother Leo murdered, and she has to escape, Leo told her if something happened to him to go to Damon Rossi and he would protect her. Although she starts to doubt it, when she rocks up the given address and it's a strip club, and even further when she meets Damon, but the moment Keira comes into Damon's life things start to change for Damon. Can Damon keep her safe? Or is he more dangerous than the people out to get her? Keira is too soft for Damon's world, but he wants her anyway, how far is he willing to go to keep her? I loved this romance with it's touches of darkness and danger, I felt for Keira and the bad hand she has been dealt and I loved her spirit that she displays to the dangerous Damon. I loved Damon, even though he is a man with much blood on his hands, the glimpses of who he is that he shows to Keira drew me into the story more (and made me hungry for more on him). I'm looking forward to the next one in the seriesI am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

This is a very basic introduction to quantum mechanics and spirituality which seem to be explorations of the same happenings/situations.

Having just re-read both books, in my mind I inevitably compare this to "Tao of Physics", as both of them relate ideas in quantum physics to Eastern mysticism. However, "...Wu Li Masters" only kind of touches on that, but it provides a much more solid introduction to the basic ideas of physics as they relate to subatomic phenomena. My background in physics is very limited and I found myself struggling with many of the concepts Zukav covers (& he kind of lost me in the last chapter or two). But overall, the book was very interesting - to the extent that, as mentioned, I read it twice and took copious notes the second time through. The book was written about 4 decades ago, so I'd be very interested to learn how the ideas he described have developed since then.

This is one of those books that will have you completely absorbed instantly--and it's about quantum physics! Even if you're not math-savvy, you will understand it; it's a memorable and well-written way to learn about the hidden world of particle physics.

Still the very best introduction to the mysteries of quantum physics. As Sir James Jeans said, "not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine. Gary Zukav brings that strangeness home in mathematics-free, clear language, and he does it like no one else. This book is a must read for anyone who claims to be educated.

I first read this book more than twenty years ago, and I found both its explanation of quantum physics understandable for the first time in my life (after many tries), and its conclusions about the nature of the world around us totally profound.I took it up again this year after reading *Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking*, by one of my intellectual heroes, Douglas Hofstadter, and his colleague, Emmanuel Sander. They presented the compelling argument thatwe can only form thoughts via analogies. From these we create the categories by which we organize our lives. The problem is that whenever we finally settle on a set of categories that we are comfortable with, it turns out that those categories don’t really explain as much as we thought they did. Our youth consists of successively having to recognize the inadequacy of the categories we have so laboriously developed--only to discover, once we've finally developed some categories that seem to work, that those categories are wrong, too!What was profound about that book was their recognition that great scientific discoveries may be expressed in mathematical terms, but the insights came from skilled expansion of each genius' analogies/categories. Einstein's recognition that the speed of light was the only constant, when everything else is relative, and that gravity is equivalent to acceleration represented creative extension of analogies, were a total disruption of the way people had categorized things in the past.In short, the combined conclusion that we can only make sense out of the world via analogies--and the analogies we've come up with are probably wrong--was disturbing.After that, I read much of *The Age of Entanglement*, by Louisa Guilder. Her position is that physics is not the tidy finished product that those of us who don’t really know much about it believe it to be. Modern physics is a process that entails brilliant observations and conclusions, but very painful ones, with different physicists having very different views on what is “truth”. Basically, Einstein's tidy categories got upset when the quantum physicists claimed that in the world of sub-atomic particles there is no underlying reality that we can perceive. That is there is no underlying reality that we can perceive without changing it. The best we can do is to identify probabilities that events happen. There is no "particle" in sub-atomic particles. Einstein died being convinced that somewhere out there was a theory that could unite the perceptions of reality we have when we look at the outside world and the probabilistic understanding of sub-atomic physics. He was absolutely convinced that "God does not play dice".The problem with that book is that in focusing on the disagreements between the physicists, it made use of extensive (and, yes, verbose) communications among them. This tended to confuse the underlying arguments.So, I dusted off *The Dancing Wu Li Masters". (OK, I couldn't find my copy, so I bought the Kindle edition.) And yes, it is much clearer both in describing the subject matter, and in driving home the problem we have with the analogies (categories) we have for looking at the world.The last three hundred years of (at least western) civilization have been unusual in history. Discoveries by Galileo and Newton that the physical world follows natural "laws" that can be identified and catalogued, have given us the illusion that we understand what is "reality". In the limited perspective of us walking around, this is true, and the insights have changed all of our lives. From nuclear energy to the space program, the world we understand is vastly different from what it was at the beginning of the 14th Century.But in the Twentieth Century, the quantum physicists have returned us to the era of Eastern Mysticism. The universe is energy, that occasionally (sort of) coagulates into what we see as matter. But this is all an illusion, based on the limitations of our ability to see inside what's going on. And we are limited in our ability to see what's going on.In Chinese, one word for physics, "wu li" means Patterns of Organic Energy. But the same syllables pronounced differently in Chinese can mean "My way", "Nonsense", or "I clutch my ideas". There is definitely something to think about, here.At the risk of extending another analogy that occurred to me the first time I read it. We are each actually part of an incredibly realistic video game.

An excellent book on quantum physics treating this very difficult to understand subject, that is from my point of view being not so knowledgeable about the deeper understanding of quantum theory. The book is very readable and puts the reader in touch with the way the physicists have arrived at their various theories. Quantum theory seems to be a never ending quest to discover the meaning of the grand design, the ultimate building blocks of life itself. Gary Zukav has written a very good book for the laymen.

I first read this when I was a teenager, and fell in love with it. Quantum mechanics are translated into English for the lay reader, and it's an eye opener. Although the writer didn't specifically make the argument, this is the first book I read where I started to connect the dots between science and spirituality.When I saw it in ebook format, I couldn't resist revisiting this old favorite.

Great introduction to the seductive world of subatomic physics. Simply written yet covers a wide range of complex thoughts. The perpetual fascination for connecting western science with eastern religion is a needless distraction. I prefer this as an introductory book of science rather than everything else this book attempts to be.

This book has led me down a path of completely new explorations of my mind. I can’t think of things as I did before.

Pretty good book for my 2nd and 4th grader. The started reading this book series last year and continued reading them. They asked me for the whole set. I would recommend to other moms. I notice though, that as you go up in the series the writing gets smaller, so be mindful of that.

Chase is my son's new hero! My 9 year old started this series a little over 2 months ago and he's hooked! Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja is captivating and keeps my son wanting to grab the next book. Well done Marcus Emerson!!

This book was awesome I've read it 5 times and am going to read it again but I think honestly that there are a lot of spelling that needs to be checked even some sentences that need to be checked and fixed but overall this is one of the BEST BOOKS EVER. So if you will share and tell other people about this book thanks again I'll be reviewing any future diary of a sixth grade ninja books bye peeps

I read this series with my 8 year old son and he loves it. My only issue is that I’ve found multiple grammatical errors. How can a published book have this? Is there no proofreading??

I purchased several books in this series after getting rave reviews from my 11 year old. He's new to 6th grade and enjoying them immensely. Once he finishes one, picks up the next one right away.

My 10 yo godson dived into the entire Ninja series I sent him with great gusto. His reading ability has been assessed at age 13-14, but he was very taken with the story of a boy his own age. It motivated him to get away from Minecraft video games and into another venue disappearing all too fast: printed ink on paper fueling imagination. Cudos to Emerson for keeping this alive. :)

My 9 year old son hates to read ...but he LOVES these and it keeps him reading without complaint!
