Heather Fraser is a Canadian author, speaker, and natural health advocate and practitioner. She is the mother of a child who suffers from peanut allergies. Fraser lives in Toronto, Canada.Robert F. An incredibly informative book. I wish I found the older edition before my kids arrived... I doubt we'd be having to constantly buy Epi Pens and check the ingredients of every little thing our first-born eats. And I consider us to be among the lucky ones... it's such a tragedy so many families have been through much worse. Heather Fraser pretty much drops the mic on what is causing this epidemic, but it's about much more than just peanut allergy ... any parent or prospective parent who is concerned about keeping their kids healthy and free of auto-immune and cognitive disorders (and worse) should pick this up, read it, and pass it on to someone they love.

If you were unaware of the connection between vaccinations and allergies and other medical conditions before, you will certainly be well informed after reading this book. I am thankful my child was born before it was common practice to combine so many vaccines into one injection. When I learned of this practice, I severely questioned the wisdom of prevailing thought. Although some of the terminology and medical data contained here can be intimidating, the overall information relayed is invaluable. I am wondering what is contained in vaccines offered today and if this scenario is still being played out in today's society.

Peanut allergies did not exist a century ago. Heather Frasier exposes the reason why they occur today in one in fifty American children. Many vaccine use peanut oil as an adjuvant. When a study was done on this practice was done in the early '70s, Congress' response was to pass a law in 1973 permitting vaccine companies to not put "inactive" ingredients on the vaccine packages, calling their formulas secret and proprietary, never mind that they were killing and disabling many thousands. The peanut oil in vaccines sensitizes many to peanut protein, resulting in peanut allergies on later exposure to peanuts, with sometimes fatal results. Frasier includes statistics on exactly how quickly peanut allergies in the US exploded: in the wake of the Hib vaccine being put on the universal vaccine schedule in 1987, the incidence of peanut allergy increased three times in only three years. This is an aside, no included in this book: Israel has very few peanut allergies, because the vaccines manufactured there do not use peanut oil, but rather sesame oil, so they have a lot of sesame allergies in their children. This is an extremely detailed, well-researched book that all parents should read, and gives us yet another reason to just say no to vaccines. (My daughter reacted to the hep-B vax at birth, given without permission, with encephalitis, to the DTaP at 18 months with having her only two words erased, and was diagnosed with autism two months later. She got pertussis at 8 months after having had three DTaPs, but caught the disease anyway, because the vaccine is very ineffective while still very dangerous. I wish that I had not permitted her to get any vaccines.)

Heather Fraser did after her child had an anaphylactic reaction to peanut butter.I’ve heard that a worried mom with a sick kid does better research than the FBI, and this book proves that point.WHY IS THAT?******************Ms. Fraser quickly points out that peanut allergy used to be a concern only for Western countries – why is that?She indicates that there was a sudden rise in the U.K., U.S., Canada and Australia around 1990, and it worsened through the 2000′s – why is that?The odds of a Western child developing a peanut allergy were 1 in 75 as of 2008 – why is that?She also writes that the person most likely to develop a peanut allergy is a male born after about 1990 in said Western countries whose “ability to detoxify had been challenged by environmental factors” – why is that?She finds it difficult to accept, as do I, that “hundreds of thousands of children had become allergic to this one food in the space of just twenty years by ingestion alone.”You can’t blame it on genetics, as the overall rate would stay the same. Logically, there would have to be something in the environment (food, toxins, etc.) that’s triggering this rise.AN EPIDEMIC OF CHILDREN'S CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS*****************************************************************************For those of you who don’t know me, I am a Certified Holistic Health Counselor and Board Member of Epidemic Answers, a non-profit that provides information to parents of children with autism, ADHD, allergies, asthma and any other chronic neurological, behavioral, digestive and/or autoimmune conditions (the etiology is the same). We let parents know that recovery is possible.I began my own investigations into this epidemic after my sons developed colic, projectile vomiting, cradle cap, ear infections, severe acid reflux, developmental delays, failure to thrive, asthma, Sensory Processing Disorder, hypotonia, eczema, mitochondrial dysfunction and food sensitivities (HINT: They’re all related.)This is why I find Ms. Fraser’s book so fascinating: she is another mom that has learned to think for herself and do her own research and find out WHY this epidemic is happening.STANDARD THEORIES NOT SUFFICIENT**************************************************She writes about different theories and why they alone are not sufficient to describe this epidemic. These theories are: The broken-skin hypothesis The ingestion hypothesis The toxin hypothesis The helminth (worm) hypothesisInstead, Ms. Fraser proposes a new hypothesis: the dramatic increase in peanut allergies happened at the same time that the number of vaccines that children were given also increased dramatically.And why not? She points out to us that “immunologist and Nobel laureate Charles Richet and pediatrician Clemens von Pirquet were able to show how the injection of vaccine proteins had caused the first allergy epidemic” over 100 years ago.Apparently, we’ve forgotten our history, so we’re doomed to repeat it.SO WHAT'S CAUSING IT?*******************************With the skill of the historian that she is, Ms. Fraser points out several key facts that point to our vaccination policy as the cause of this alarming rise in peanut allergy, which is paralleled by alarming rises in autism, ADHD, asthma and other chronic health conditions.The clues she details are:* “Medical literature illustrated that the only means by which immediate and mass allergy had ever been caused was by injection.” It used to be called “serum sickness” as early as the 1890′s.* Multi-dose vaccines came into being after President Reagan “signed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act from which emerged the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) in 1988. VICP was a ‘no-fault’ alternative to the tort system… (and) the pressures on vaccine makers eased.”* In 1985, 7 vaccines were given to children. By 2007, the number had grown to 37.* Beginning in 1993, multiple vaccinations were given in a single needle.* Vaccines are loaded with adjuvants, such as aluminum, that stimulate the body to mount an immune response. Adjuvants can cause allergic reactions and are the “immunologists’ dirty little secret’. Aluminum is a known IgE-stimulating adjuvant.* Peanut oil is used to make vaccine formulations. Not only is it impossible to remove all the proteins (proteins cause the allergic reaction) from the oil, but the quality of oil varies widely. “Refined peanut oil can create allergy whether consumed or ingested.”* Incidentally, Ms. Fraser points out that soy and egg white are used to make lecithin in vaccines. She didn’t explain in great detail, perhaps because it was out of the scope of this book, but this fact may be what’s behind the huge increase in soy and egg allergies, as well.Before you dismiss this book out of hand and say it’s a bunch of hooey written by an anti-vaxer, I urge you to read it first, follow her logic and research the references she has prolifically listed. Then you can make up your own mind and think for yourself.

My husband and I have been wanting to open our own catering business for a while now and really never have because we don't know where to start. I can say we haven't read the whole book yet, but already I have learned so much information and have a clear idea of where to start. The best part is that the writer gives real life examples of things that have happened to her which makes me feel like the advice is tried and true.

Through Denise Vivaldo's books, my personal chef business has been able to transition and expand into catering. And both the 6th and the newly updated 7th edition of her home based catering book have already proven to be worth their weight in gold to me. The advise, forms, tables, suggestions, tips and even some recipes included in this incredible book make it not only a resource book, but an essential business tool.

I have enjoyed reading this book. She offers some great advice for a catering startup. As a side note she is not telling you to cater out of your home kitchen as some other comments say, rather she is telling you to use your home as your office/base.

Although the information is geared toward big city clients and resources, the information and foundation is still sound for catering ventures of all sizes.

Burned through this book really quickly. It was a good read and great insight in to the mind of someone who truly knows how to work game of life, Jay-Z really took hustling to the corporate world and he owned every opportunity he got. It's made me more aware of the things i need to do in my life to become more financially secure.

I enjoy listening to Jay Z. However, I'm not a die hard fan (or a die hard fan of hip hop). I took a chance on this book and I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Even though Jay Z didn't "approve" of this book, the author did an excellent job chronicling "Hov's" life and success.

I enjoyed this book very much. I'm a huge Jay Z fan and I enjoyed learning more about his business acumen. The writing was clear and easily understandable and it didn't feel biased. I would recommend this to friends who wanted to read about how Jay moves in business and what it motivations are (could be?). I'm still a fan afterwards. I'm still inspired by his moves.

I read it nonstop for days. It is rare a book can hold my attention, or keep me from straying to another book. And it wasn't just Jay-Z that kept my attention (I am only a quasi-fan), Greenburg's analysis was insightful and well-written, as well as entertaining.

It's entertaining but not exactly a shocking revelation or anything deep. Main takeaway is JZ is all business all about $$$$$In that sense he missed a big chance to cash in on the royalties on this one !

It was a fascinating look at Jay Z enterprises and the long road to them, but as some critic on the internet said in a review of the book, it could have used more defined advise for complete understanding of the Jay Z methods. Other than that, it's pretty interesting.

While the main character, Tom Hazard, looks 41, he is actually centuries old. To avoid being institutionalized or treated as a medical research subject, Tom has moved around his entire life staying nowhere more than 8-10 years. When the book opens, Tom has decided to return to London and teach history at a local low-income high school. He is tired of constantly being on the move and wants to have an ordinary life. As his quest for a normal life unfolds, we are taken back and forth in time to learn about the many places and people Tom has experienced over his long and storied life.I loved the history aspects of the story. In his lengthy life, Tom met Shakespeare, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Captain Cook and many others, and their encounters were so much fun to read about. Haig focuses on relationships and their importance in people’s lives. He also observes that humans are bound to repeat the mistakes of the past, a sentiment that addresses what the United States is experiencing right now. I don’t generally quote books in my reviews, but I felt that the following statement completely encapsulates what we are going through right now: “The lesson is that ignorance and superstition are things that can rise up, inside almost anyone, at any moment. And what starts as a doubt in a mind can swiftly become an act in the world.” His recognition that humans are bound to repeat the mistakes of the past is a sobering and timely statement.I enjoyed How to Stop Time. Occasionally, I was ready for it to move along a little faster but overall it was a very entertaining read.

This was a fairly easy read for me, and one that I absolutely devoured in a day. And it's kind-of funny, I told my son while I was reading it that I saw this in my head as a movie. Rarely do I picture things being acted out when I'm reading them. I don't normally see characters or places as I'm going along. But with this book, I could SEE everything so clearly. I could perfectly visualize Tom walking down a street in London, and seeing the present day chip shops etc but also seeing what it was like in the past bleeding through and causing him to lose his breath. Being taken aback by realizing he's standing in front of the spot that was once his home, and is now a pet shop.In the beginning of the book, Tom talks about how he's not like a vampire stuck perpetually in his youth. He is aging. He will die. He CAN die. He's not immortal. But the story is reminiscent, at least to me, of some of the better vampire fiction I've read in the past. Even more so, it reminded me of the television show New Amsterdam starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (of Game of Thrones fame), which only aired for 8 episodes but I LOVED. The whole idea of living for an extremely long amount of time, watching people come and go, places evolve, loves lost and the whole gamut of issues that would arise if you had lived for over 400 years...and knew you were going to live for about 900...are fascinating and this book merely touches on them, and with a flourish that is at times almost poetic.I think my favorite sections of the book involved the people in the past that Tom interacted with, and then how he tried to weave some of his knowledge into the school lessons he was teaching. I'm a giant Shakespeare nerd, so the section in which he works for Shakespeare was wonderful. Was it historically accurate? I haven't the foggiest, and don't even care a whole lot...it was just entertaining to me! And having drinks with Fitzgerald?!? So lovely, and in my head Fitz was totally Hiddles. (If you haven't watched Midnight in Paris, you need to!!)Yes, there is a bit of a love story...but it wasn't sappy or overwhelmingly emotional. I feel like the real love story here involved Tom and Life in general. The book really was all about Tom figuring out how he wanted to live all of these years that he's been given. Did he want to just go through the paces and saunter along in a fog? Or did he want to open himself up to new and exciting possibilities, and put himself out there again?A quick and enjoyable book. Science-Fiction with some historical aspects. I enjoyed the author's writing style, which has an almost poetic flourish. I definitely recommend it!

I was constantly frustrated reading this book. It was written well and the premise of the book is interesting-- it takes the idea of immortality and de-mystifies it. However, the main character is extraordinarily flat and the most interesting characters get very little page time (e.g. Marion, Mary Peters). Regarding structure, each chapter alternates between present day and past and the past chapters are so long and the present day ones so short that no concept or character ever gets well developed. I wanted to like this book so much, but I had to force myself to finish it because it was so dull.

The inclusion of use and coverage of both digital and analog equipment is bound to keep the intimidation factor for new life stage technicians and casual users under control. Lastly, a large emphasis on safety and the hilarious diagrams are hard to miss and should keep everyone safe.

Great read for anybody working with sound equipment. About the Author

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician and writer of short stories and plays, including the masterpieces: 'Uncle Vanya', 'The Seagull', and 'The Cherry Orchard'. Rosamund Bartlett is the author of Shostakovich in Context (OUP, 2000) and Wagner and Russia (CUP, 1995). She is currently working on a biography of Anton Chekhov that will be published by Simon & Schuster. Anthony Phillips is the translator of the letters between Dmitry Shostakovich and Isaak Gilkman that were published as Story of a Friendship (Faber, 2001/ Cornell UP, 2001).

This is an inspiring book, not only because of the subject, but also because the author has an extreme sense of beauty as she follows Chekhov's life. She can get a prismatic perspective on the subject, from intellectual approach, to everyday life anecdotes, that gives a perception of the man not only as a main figure of literature, but as a regular man and what makes him a giant of his time.

Chekhov found the idea of autobiography "real torture," but here, in his voluminous letters to family, friends, patrons, lovers, and others, you find all you really need to know to enhance the charm of an exceptionally ordinary, kind, gentle, and talented artist and human being. If you've at all realized the exceptional skill and insight of his creations, read these letters! To do so is great pleasure.

While the current review is lovely, it's quite wordy for my attention span--I am sure some share my sentiments. Simply put: buy this publication if you like Anton Chekhov. The editor's autobiography and narrative is comprehensive, readable and not at all boring--the included maps are a nice touch and the composition as a whole is a stunning one. You will likely find it easy to relate to his writings or at least enjoy his prose, candor and humor. You will find many moments or evenings of enjoyment from taking a trip down Chekhov lane.

This is exactly what I was looking for, a collection of Chekhov's letters that I can read and learn from (I am a Creative Writing major).

Janet Malcolm's "Reading Chekhov: A Critical Journey" (2001) - a brilliant little book undeservedly maligned by some reviewers - sent me straight back to the book store for a biography of Anton Chekhov. I can report from this trip that the largest bookstore in South East Asia does not carry one single biography of Chekhov!Instead, I found "Anton Chekhov: A Life in Letters" (2004). And I did not regret it one bit. The book is the fullest collection of Chekhov's letters in English translation to date and contains 370 selected letters reproduced in full. It comes with a chronology of Chekhov's life, a very readable, splendid short introduction, suggestions for further reading, a helpful list of correspondents and four very useful maps. An index at the end of the volume assists in, among other things, finding references to stories and plays in Chekhov's letters.According to the editors, this book is also the first uncensored edition of Chekhov's correspondence in any language. Chekhov, a physician by training, called the facts of life by their name and took life's mishaps with a sense of humor. Later editors, more prudish and therefore considerably more boring, simply cut out what they called "rude language." Only after Glasnost, in the 1990s, the official portrait of Chekhov as a "decorous and refined gentleman with a stick, who never permitted himself to use racy language and who was rather pious and sickly, with little interest in women" (xv) was beginning to be revised.The editors point out that Chekhov "may have hidden himself in his literary works, leaving it up to his readers to puzzle out his point of view, and he may have had an aversion to talking about himself in public, but in his letters he could be surprisingly outspoken at times," (xxxv) and so it happens that his correspondence reads almost like the autobiography he always declined to write.Chekhov's letters illustrate why he is perhaps Russia's best-loved writer: "The qualities which first endeared him to Russian readers back in the 1880s are the same ones which explain his appeal today. He wrote no vast novels in which he attempted to solve the problems of existence [that would be Dostoevsky] or fathom the forces of world history [Tolstoy in "War and Peace"]. He had no particular axe to grind about how people should live their lives, but, like the good doctor that he was, he had a superb ability to diagnose what it was that prevented people from finding happiness and fulfillment and a unique talent for pinpointing it in a clear-sighted way that was a the same time immensely gentle and compassionate. He also had an infectious sense of humour and an unerring sense of life's ironies, which prevented his writing from ever becoming too portentous or sentimental." (xxxvii)The photo used for the cover shows a pensive Chekhov with a slightly mischievous smile playing around the corner of his mouth. Almost as if just then one of his famous quips had crossed his mind: "Medicine is my lawful wedded wife, and literature is my mistress. When I've had enough of the one, I can go and spend the night with the other."
