I carried this book with me through much of Senegal, especially Dakar. On balance, this book is well worth it. The strong points have to do with the explanations of Senegalese geography, history and demographics. The weakest parts are that like most guides, the typical tourist venues are covered as if they're typically Senegalese.There's nothing like Dakar. The weather is just great on this tiny piece of land jutting out to the ocean. And everything there seems magical when you're a foreigner visiting. The food is good; the people polite and generous beyond anything I had experience anywhere; and the ambiance is uniquely peaceful. It's a place where I wish I could raise my girls at this stage while they're so young.This Lonely Planet guide exceled when explaining the Sahel, the trees, the food and demographics. This is the relatively academic side of the book. As for practical knowledge such as where do you go for everything, the explanations were of only very limited value. This is often a problem in travel books.

Highly recommended! We just returned from our fourth trip to Senegal, and we found the Lonely Planet guidebook to be highly accurate and easily usable. It is well written and includes much helpful cultural information in addition to all the necessary facts. Don't leave for Senegal without it!!!!

Hundreds of useful practical hints, explanations of cultural background and important things to remember for "whites" in order not to hurt or offend the traditional, mythical or religious beliefs, which are all very strong over there. I have travelled in West Africa myself, before reading this book, and found that it really shows the most important details to consider. Framed boxes in the text make it easy to find the essential tips. It is also valuable, that it shows how to travel cheaply, nothing about the luxurious hotels, more of the budget type of stuff.

I am writing a review for a book of an author whose underlying premise I reject, but whose practical thinking outside the box is provocative.Robert Lupton, a Presbyterian, believes that a chief part of the Church’s mission in the world is to relieve and reverse world poverty. I reject this remise as unbiblical. At the same time, we know that helping the poor is to be a norm of our Christian existence as God gives opportunity.The author is also a revolutionary who champions radical reform in the world of charity and the aid industry. Lupton sees the vast majority of aid work in the world as unprofitable, even destructive, both materially and spiritually, to its recipients. To this my experience heartily agrees.While criticism of the status quo is a point of this volume, it is not the main point. He has made that point elsewhere (Toxic Charity). This book is more about how to help the poor in ways that lead to genuine economic long-term benefit. In short, his book is a call to Christian businessmen to go into the world and use their business acumen to help the poor by creating jobs and teaching job skills. This, Lupton says, is what really works.I found it very helpful to think through what the author is saying. It helps our family think through how to best help others who are in need.Here are some quotes from the book that give a taste of what he communicates:“Giving to people in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy them.”“The fact is, we cannot serve others out of poverty, no matter how much we may want to. That is a core concept of both my mission and this book. And the reason I am so passionate about broadcasting this bad news about the status quo is that I care deeply about charity’s goals and results: I want to move people out of poverty. That is my life’s work.”“The only effective charity is the kind that asks more from those being served, rather than less. Asking for more sends an affirming message to the recipient that he or she also has something of value to offer.”“IS HURTFUL CHARITY BETTER than no charity at all? The answer is no.”“One of the most significant, rational decisions that determine the outcome of our charity is distinguishing between crisis and chronic need. An emergency response to chronic need is at best counterproductive and, over time, is actually harmful.”“The Creator has entrusted to all of us certain abilities that, when rightly employed, align us with our created purpose. That’s how we gain our lives. It is not unloving to expect people to do their part. Just the opposite. It is cruel to send the message that a person has nothing of worth to offer. The compassionate volunteers of “compassion central,” in their zeal to help, have tragically missed this fundamental truth.”“The only thing that will enable the poor to emerge from poverty is a decent job. And the primary creators of decent jobs are business people who believe deeply in the free - enterprise system.”“The reality is that without for - profit, wealth - generating businesses, the poor will remain at a subsistence level, scratching out an existence, their hopes and dreams shackled to the daily pressures of survival.”“We could offer to the poor our most valued talent: business acumen. Making money with the poor, after all, is the highest form of charity.”“Only living - wage jobs can move the poverty needle — jobs that local residents create through their own hard work and ingenuity, and jobs produced by for - profit businesses created by outside investors and operators.”

This is a book our Book Club read after previously reading Toxic Charity, by the same author. It made us think more clearly about what we are doing with our neighborhood at church, and about social programs that purport to help the poor, but only in the end, create dependency and lower self-esteem on the part of the helped. A tough book, over all, because it tells how hard it really is to change social policy, and what concerted effort it takes to change a neighborhood. Just the right circumstances have to be in place, and the right intent on the part of the helpers. Puts in a plug for the essential assistance of business and the hard-headed, cold look at results, with the end goal to make a profit while making a difference, for only in that way will a program sustain itself. Recommended for all do-gooders.

This is an OUTSTANDING book that I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in finding practical ways to make their charitable dollars more effective in their impact. As a psychologist and consultant to families of wealth, I've been exposed to numerous approaches (all well-meaning) to helping those less fortunate financially. I've followed Bob (Lupton) and his work for decades and he clearly has the experience and track record to "shoot straight" with the rest of us. I would strongly encourage you to get and read this book. It will challenge and encourage you.

This is a real thought provoker. I think there is something in this book for everyone, right or left, conservative or liberal. This book is really a part two of the author's other book "Toxic Charity". This book picks up where that left off. That book documents where charities may not be the fix but the cause of poverty. Now the author answers what to do next.He calls for an little introduction of capitalism to fix the problem. He lays out an argument in why and how that should be accomplished. That for sure alone would cause intense discussions by many. Then he dives even deeper. He reinvents the principle of example. People need to move back into the war zone which as become the inner city of so many of our cities. This power of getting involved in those communities first by living there then getting involved would change things. I personally am not so sure about that but it is an interesting thought.The book has a lot of fascinating ideas. The author does lay it out in easy to understand terms. The book is very simple to go through. However there is a lack of empirical research to illustrate and prove his points.

On the money....I have worked for inter-city Christian non-profits and the biggest frustration is how government benefits tie our hands when it comes to helping people escape poverty. All the services provided in the city by well-meaning Christians have little long-lasting results, they rarely move beyond maintenance. Also, Lupton's naming of poverty of things beyond financial...spot on.

Want to challenge how you think about charity? Read this! It is excellent and extremely thought provoking. It has challenged me as I wrestle through what effective charity actually looks like and who is actually getting help/feeling good with most of the current charity models.

I gave this book only four stars for the fact much of the information is a repeat from this authors previously written book "Charity Detox." Yet what is new is really quite informative. To think that so many Christians in our churches every Sunday could have the potential to alleviate poverty is worth shouting out from the pulpits. Great book.

Excellent source book for community workers and organizers (especially faith-based) and philanthropists. His examples are mostly from Christian-based organizations but are clear and pointed. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the book could use a good sweep by a good editor to eliminate repetition. I'm recommending the book wherever I can.

As difficult as this may be for some to read, and as heart wrenching as the pictures are, this should be reuqired reading in any high school or college curriculum. The question one asks at the start is why, and this book gives a window into how and why such depravity can occur.

Anyone who cares about the TRUTH of history must read this book as it is source of the research that woke up the world to HOLOCAUST the Nazis perpetrated upon the world! Do you dare read the TRUTH or are you one of those you sticks their heads in the sand? Decide what you are; a seeker of Truth or a denier thereof!

Nice book, promised conditions. The only problem is that it is not the complete edition —as announced—, so you must take that in account.

This was an extremely critical read into how the Germans treated the Jewish population during WWII. A must read for any student or scholar. Having read other books on the general topic, this was the best book I have read to date on the scope of atrocities against the Jewish population.

Hilberg was the first and is still the best. Everybody else is derivative. Raul Hilberg might be dead, but he left us this as a monument to who yet reads.

Excellent. This should be required reading for all Holocaust deniers, and sadly, there are a growing number of them.

Hilberg is an amazingly complete and fantastic resource.My only suggestion is to read both volumes of Victor Klemperer's, I Will Bear Witness, (sorry, the review doesn't allow for underlining), while you are reading Hilberg's Volumes I and II. It's a great way to see the day-to-day real time results of what Hilberg discusses in both volumes.Uno problemo: The last 27 pages of my Volume II are missing. Twenty-seven pages in Hilberg-land can contain an encyclopedic amount of information. I may never know the exact details and processes of how what finally happened to the Hungarian Jews (the end of Hilberg's semicircular arc) finally happened to them.Yale U. Press is investigating whether this is just a problem with my Volume II, or a problem with the whole run.

I struggled last semester in med school. I had a really hard time trying to learn all of the information. Sometimes I would normally look at our scribe notes which are usually 8-12 pages depending on the class. That was just too much information for me to handle. I noticed that I had a lot of trouble following ppt presentations (probably because most professors don't know how to make a proper presentation). I felt like teachers would talk about one subtopic, move to the next one, and then bring it back to the first subtopic (which is good). However, I had a hard time fixing my notes to show the connections. Now I just draw an arrow and look at the map 1-2 times a week and I remember how the ideas connect. Anyway I used this book to sketch my notes in class. At home I would either retrace or redraw. Since following this book with a few personal modifications for my busy lifestyle, my grades have soared from barely passing to As and Bs. I now am able to easily follow lectures and working half as hard.

This book is so easy to read and understand. I bought it back in December to read over Winter break and wanted to put Mind Maps into effect in my Spring semester. Personally, I am a visual learner and with mind maps organizing my notes before or after lectures, I found it easy to remember how I organized everything in my own way & I got A's in my classes. Let's just say, it may seem super intuitive and how hard can making a map be for your notes, but everything is even clearer once you get through each chapter. I definitely recommend this book, it kept me interested throughout the entire way!

My only critical points which are really hypercritical are the odd German translation errors ("funktion") and the lack of sections on useful upgrades like PMAs, electronic ignitions, overdrive gears, 750 bores, and 277 degree re-phase.
