I am not yet finished reading "Seeking Sicily", but without a doubt what I have read so far, is the most heartbreaking, and yet joyful, book I have yet read. I am the last of 14 children born to Eugenio and Marianne (Lipari) Zenone who were marred in Sicily and came to American in 1915. I listened attentively as a boy to all the stories my parents told me of their life in Sicily. This book has made me cry! It is a story of a people that has largely been untold! One of the most oppressed people in the world, anyone would be enlightened by reading this book about the land of my parents birth. Yes, I am an American. I am also proud to be a Sicilian! A fascinating, highly readable portrayal of My Beautiful Sicily. The island has endured so much pain and abuse by invaders. Keahey provides a tour of the history, natural wonders, landmarks, and personalities using a most entertaining, personal, and vivid prose.. My eagerness to re-visit the island just got stronger and stronger as I read his account of the many things I missed on my first visit in 2014.

Very interesting read which explains much about Sicily, Sicilians and how they differ from Italians. How they are different and why is fascinating. This is a history book and a travel book that explores the people as much as the places. Wish I had read it before travelling to Sicily. Things make more sense now.

I truly loved this book but I don't know why but it took weeks to arrive while most of my books only take days. I am travelling to Sicily in the Fall and this book was quite informative about the history of the country and told me some things I'm delighted to learn and makes me even more eager to get on to my journey.

This is an easy-to-read history of the political, cultural, and historical influences that have shaped the persona of Sicilians today. It is very well researched. I am planning a trip to Sicily and I feel that I'll be much better able to make the most of my trip.

I got this book because I've never been to Sicily, but my family is from Adrano and Palermo. I wanted to learn more about where my family came from and the culture. The way the author wrote the book is interesting, and I liked how he wrote about him being there in present day, then going back and telling you about the history and customs of the places he visited. I've learned about the island's history, occupations, wars, food, and of course there is a chapter on the Mafia. Also, I enjoyed the pictures provided in the middle of the book. Overall, it was a great purchase. Even the design of the book is nice. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading about Sicily.

John Keahey's work is neither a tourist guide, nor a pedantic historical dissertation. It is a wonderful memoir of the author's four visits to Sicily, in which he humbly dedicates himself to the job of being a witness about Sicily, its peoples, and its history, with a keen perception, and sensitiveness. The reader feels as if s/he has been there, and vicariously experienced the landscape, the food, the traditions, the people, at the same time wetting one's appetite to go and experience it oneself. A real jewel of travelog writing.

I enjoyed th historical writing of this book. Only chapter that was a slow read was on cooking. I enjoy cooking and feel this was not a forte of his writing. But, a great book all the same.

Sailing up the Inland Passage, the protected waterway that serves as a great nautical freeway between Puget Sound and Alaska, Raban (British expat and chronicler of the American experience) sounds its history in a clever, always curious, yet increasingly morose voice. It's a lengthy journey over vast territory, and Raban struggles to maintain a streamlined narrative. Raban weaves together several parallel life passages while sailing from Seattle to Alaska: his own solo voyage, long-past explorers of the Pacific Northwest, his father's death, and the barely-noticed unraveling of his marriage. Some dangers lurk forever deep underwater; others appear spontaneously floating on the surface. Life, like sailing, is complicated, unknowable, sometimes ominous. There's a lot of history bound up in the sailing metaphor: Raban's own as well as Captain Vancouver's and his family's. Some is objectively third-person; much is deeply personal. Not every reader will want to get on board with such an introspective observer, but it's a very well-written account of one man's journey.

Jonathan Raban is, for my money, among the best of our contemporary travel writers, standing shoulder to shoulder with Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson, and Passage to Juneau only reinforces that opinion. I first read this book in 1999, when it was published, because I was looking forward to a sailing trip through the Inside Passage from Seattle to Southeastern Alaska. Then I read it again just recently because I am again looking forward to this trip.Like most of Raban's books, Passage to Juneau, is written in two layers. The first is an account of his preparations and execution of a solo sailing trip from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska. The second level is an entertaining and well-researched historical account of the travels and travails of Capt. George Vancouver aboard HMS Discovery during his four-year exploration of the northwest coast of North America.But it isn't really a story about a routine sailing adventure similar to that undertaken by dozens of boats every sailing season, is it. It is a poignant story of a successful writer who in late middle age looses first his father (to cancer) and then his wife (to neglect and absence of common focus) and is left alone facing old age in disconsolate apprehension and confusion. The reader is given an early clue to the direction the book is about to take when Raban, early on in his voyage, meets a married couple who seem to cling to each other like the two sides of a Velcro patch and makes the mildly derisive comment, "some people are more married that others," leaving us with the feeling that he isn't very married at all. This is reinforced throughout the book by his obsessive preparations for a planned visit by his young daughter, where he is looking forward to showing her the bears, with only passing mention that his wife will be coming along also.Raban is an excellent writer who doesn't hesitate to bare his soul to the reader and does it with a refreshing lack of maudlinly and only a trace of sentimentality. He records his varying responses to his surrounding with an honest and only slightly judgmental way that lets the reader understands what is going on without feeling the need to interfere or change things. This interested-but-detached view is particularly apparent in his interactions with the members of the First Nations tribes he encounters, and in his slightly cynical take on the ceremonies he is invited to attend. It is like he is letting the reader share his view of the world through one of the portholes in his boat.Passage to Juneau is a recommended read for anyone interested in maritime history, for present-day sailors traveling on sailboats, and to anyone wanting a poignant yet free-from-moralizing story about the personal passage of a late-middle-aged man facing an uncertain future.

This is THE book to read if you plan to spend time on the waters around Seattle, Vancouver, the San Juans and the Inside Passage. The author shares his sailing experiences and, if you pay attention and you are a sailor, you will not have to experience a tragedy involving tides, winds, obstructions, sunken logs, large shipping, and more. The book brings to life the explorations of George Vancouver and his crew along with other early explorers and traders who plied these shores. Several areas of interest are set forth in parallel and in the form of flashbacks. For example, as the author sails the various channels and sounds along the Inside Passage and Puget Sound, he reflects upon what George Vancouver might have seen when he passed there over 200 years before. At the same time, he discusses what early Indians saw and how they related to the sea and how modern day Indians are faring. He delves into Indian art and how the Indians might have drawn artistic inspiration from wave borne reflections. Raban shares his encounters with some of the very interesting characters who inhabit the coastal waters and harbors. He even goes into the changes in the economy in the regions through which he passes. And, on top of all this, he brings you into his personal world where he sails a more stormy sea, the sea of the death of his father, his retracing his life in England and - to top it all off - the rough tides of marital issues. First, I read this book on loan from the public library and then I had to add it to my personal library. Raban introduces some authors I had not read and he enlarged my reading experience for which I thank him. He even caused me to visit Munro's bookstore in Victoria, BC. This book augmented my own voyage up the Inside Passage. I also gave it as a gift to a friend in Seattle who - like Raban - is an avid yachtsman. You will benefit by this book if you take it with you when you visit the region. A masterpiece.

I have been buying cookbooks, not for the recipes but for ideas and new ways of cooking. I for a long time basically lived on pasta and hamburger meat while I was trying to get over cigarettes. I gained a 100 pounds and developed type2 diabetics. I now plan each meal around a vegetable or two. Boiling, roasting or any manner that will allow me to use minimum amounts of fats and starches. Still haven't found a low carb desert worth the trouble of making or eating.Got a lot of good ideas from this book and have enjoyed the results - every bite.

Not very detailed or explanatory which surprised me considering CIA books. The information could be found on any generic website. Recipes were redo's of other CIA books except with substituted healthy replacements. good book if you need a lot of tofu recipes.

The Culinary Institute should know better. This book lacks proper proof reading and the recipes leave much to be desired. For example, Rosemary Chicken with no rosemary? Really? This is one of several examples throughout the book that leave one laughing. There are also flagrant punctuation errors which I find amusing. I am no English major but I do expect quality work. If you must get this book for your higher education via the culinary institute you are attending, then so be it. If not, I would consider other alternatives.

Would highly recommend any book from the CIA, especially the newer versions, the book includes hundreds of helpful and very descriptive recipes with nutritional information. Also there's a lot of helpful literature in the book about nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle, the book includes cooking techniques and several pictures of tools needed for each dish.

Astounding book. I have numerous thoughts that I truly need to execute. In business, the most troublesome is the start. This book makes me significantly make a couple of data examination viably. This is totally the best one.

It has some good content but there are way too many grammar mistakes and errors. Ironically, the author expressed twice the importance of proofreading your work but he didn't do it on this book. The content was ok but the errors are really distracting. The information is over generalized.

This is a good book, however, the audio version hasn't been edited to remove stops and repeats from the reader, which makes it very hard to listen to. I'm surprised Audible let it through like this.

Finally, what I was looking for. An easy and realistic vegan cookbook. This is useful for anyone who doesn't want to spend much time on food preparation. Everything can be done in the microwave, but, honestly, you can add steps to suit individual taste. I have a big collection of vegan cookbooks, but they mostly are not used because I don't want to spend a few hours a day buying ingredients, chopping, cooking and cleaning. I do it for guests and if I'm in the mood, but never for every day. This cookbook adds options for us minimalists who want to eat well but keep it simple.

The book itself is of good quality, but I did not like the recipes. Most of them are unappetizing and unhealthy, which I now realize that it was not advertising healthy recipes. I liked the idea of this book, but as a college student, I do not eat microwaved food every day and want to enjoy a healthy vegan lifestyle. I am a new vegan and this book did not help me with my transition, but it might help students who live in dorms with only a microwave for cooking.

I am a huge peta supporter and i love vegan recipes (and am in college.) but this is just a book about how to microwave things with pre made products. i cook from scratch and like to eat healthy so this book wasn't for me.

This is perfect for people who don't have time to cook, and throw everything in the microwave. It's very simple. It is aimed for college students who eat ramen noodles and are always on the go. My biggest disappointment was that it doesn't have any pictures inside, which makes it hard for me to page through and find something that looks yummy to me, when it's an endless blur of black text.Although the recipes have microwave directions, one could always make them on the stove instead.Btw, Fake meat sounds unhealthy when you use the word "fake" but really is not all that unhealthy. It's made from vegetables and plant based items not plastic. It's a replacement made from healthier things not a plastic ham. It has less cholesterol and doesn't contain hormones. Hot dogs made from meat are what I'd really be worried about, do you know how that is made?If you don't mind cooking, I'd recommend "Oh she glows cookbook", it has beautiful pictures for every recipe, and are all Vegan. Look it up on Amazon.

I am well-beyond the normal college-age. I also own a stove.This book helped me a lot in the early years of wanting to experiment with vegan food. Years later (and more experienced at cooking/baking). I STILL grab this book for those days I'm in a hurry, lazy, etc. and just want a quick meal and I'm blank on what to eat!Tip: For those who may have food allergies or sensitivities, you can be flexible and sub most things in this book: For instance: For those avoiding soy: Just use coconut milk (or other alt milk of choice), use a rice-based, almond-based, or coconut milk-based yogurt, in appropriate recipes that call for tofu or sour cream or cream cheese, or if you can eat nuts: use cashews or other nuts for certain soy-based sauces, cheeses. For vegan cheeses, use gluten and soy-free daiya cheese shreds or wedges.For gluten free: Use gf breads, gf flours, instead of oats, use quinoa (flakes or regular). (Example for the Knock-Oats, I use quinoa flakes vs oatmeal, and a soy-free peanut butter (Santa Cruz brand). For refined sugar-free: Use agave, maple syrup or coconut sugar.You can also make these recipes on a hotplate, stove/oven or toaster oven vs microwave if desired. Take this book with you when travelling, too! VERY handy! Also great as an emergency/disaster book, imo.I hope that they come up with an updated version of this book, soon what with the updated vegan products and tips for those with the ever-increasing food sensitivities and allergies.

I’m not a cooking master by any means. Can’t do much besides cooking boxed macaroni and cheese, so trying to be vegan in college (while my school serves no vegan food) was a struggle. This book came fast and gave me so many easy and tasty ideas. I just made a nacho recipe from the book today and it was filling and delicious! And all of the recipes that require cooking use the microwave, which is great if your hall doesn’t have a stovetop or oven. I’ve marked a lot of recipes that look good and after the nachos, I’m excited to try more of them!

The recipes all seem yummy, simple, and affordable which is exactly what I was looking for. It also includes special sections just for certain ingredients such as peanut butter and ramen. The part that I can't stand, however, is that every recipe also has some stupid college-stereotype-related joke. The jokes had me cringing, and eventually I stopped previewing the recipes because I was so annoyed. I'm sure this book will be very useful, but it could have seriously done without the corny studying/flirting/partying jokes. It seems more like it was written by someone trying to be funny to college students rather than someone who could actually relate to them.

It's awesome very simple recipes an taste is amazing. You don't have to follow the exact way of cooking such as boil instead of microwave.

“You’d rather,” Mallory asked her best friend, Mary Ann, “study spelling than spy on Max and Winnie?” It was hard to believe that anyone would prefer spelling to snooping, but Mallory was sure in the mood for it. She just absolutely had to know what her brother Max and Winnie were doing in his room after school. Since they were “officially boyfriend and girlfriend” Max didn’t want her to tag along. At all. It really wasn’t fair because she was his sister and that Winnie was Mary Ann’s stepsister. At any rate, their parents were going on a vacation “get away” for a week and it would be the perfect time to spy on them.It was VVI (very, very important) to find out what they were doing while her parents were gone. Mary Ann was going to be studying spelling with her boyfriend, C-Lo, so now was the time to act. Crystal, their babysitter, was VVI (very, very insistent) that she “stay out of other people’s business” and that meant Max and Winnie. They claimed they were working on a science project and when Mallory made out her list of ten things they might be doing when they were alone in Max’s room it wasn’t on there. Mrs. Daily, her third-grade teacher had talked about “three’s a crowd” and now Crystal was talking about it too.It was time to put on her dark sunglasses, get out her magnifying glass, and tape recorder. Just what were they doing in that room? “Which part of `we are working on our science project’ is hard for you to understand?” Max was really, really getting mad, but that could be a clue. You read pages of literature on Lebanon in this book and try to find one original thought that Harris might have to offer about the country, but to no avail. Additionally, the cover of the book featuring a picture from the 2005 massive rallies in Beirut that led to the Syrian withdrawal form Lebanon gives the impression that this book was compiled in the aftermath of this event whereas in fact it was not. The book is a reprint of an earlier edition with an updated chapter.Even though Lebanon's groups and forces have maintained the same presence for the past couple of decades, yet after the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and the consequent withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon after 30 years of occupation have revolutionized our perspective on the Syrian role in Lebanon that had until April 2005 kept low profile by the force of Syrian secret police in Lebanon.The book also endorses the more traditional view on the issue of Lebanese nationalism which has been a point of contention for the past half century. Harris should have better restricted himself to presenting the points of view of the different groups without offering any further analysis because at time, Harris looks to be unfairly taking sides.The book's style is dry and does not flow and ideas are not original and merely repeat what has been already printed in earlier books. The work is also voluminous for no obvious reason.

William Harris's The New Face of Lebanon is a fairly comprehensive history of modern Lebanon (i.e. after 1920). Although he does spend time discussing the history of Lebanon prior to 1920, the main thrust of the book focuses on the period of the French mandate and thereafter. In this aspect, the book is an excellent resource for anyone seeking to understand the modern political situation in Lebanon. The book is long (300+ pages) and covers many areas of Lebanese history, including population demographics, economics, sectarian divisions, as well as geopolitical and geographical alignments. The writing is often very dry - not uncommon in a history text - but the sheer amount of information makes up for this. Especially useful is the new final chapter of the book, which covers Lebanon's history from 1990 to 2005 (to this point, the only book to analyze the assassination of Rafiq Hariri and the subsequent Syrian withdrawl from Lebanon, although The Killing of Mr Lebanon by Blanford will be released soon).Harris has an excellent grasp on the political intricacies of Lebanon, and there are several asides about his personal experience as a journalist in Lebanon during the war years. Although he is a journalist, this book is not a journalistic account of the war years, it reads much more like an academic history. Also, although he sometimes refers to debates among Lebanese historians over their own history, Harris does not engage these debates frequently (a much better resource for this is Kamal Salibi's A House of Many Mansions). Overall, this is a great book about modern Lebanese history, although be aware of exactly what it is. A more accessible account of the same events is Sandra Mackey's Lebanon, although Harris's book is far greater in both scope and detail, and more suited to someone who already has a working knowledge of modern Middle Eastern and lebanese history.

This book--as does its predecessor, "The Faces of Lebanon"--warrants attention, because it constitutes an honest attempt at interpreting modern Lebanon's history by examining the ideals, events, wounds, compromises, and realities of Lebanese society. If you are looking for the jaded regurgitation of the same old Arab nationalist cant, this is certainly not the book for you; you're better served with the lackluster historiographies and demagoguery of Lebanophobes of Fisk and AbuKhalil's persuasion. If, however, you are interested in the fresh, honest perspective of a sharp interpreter of Lebanese society, this is the real McCoy.
